Confusing words

I always confuse between 'alternative' and 'alternate'. Before using these words in conversation, I immediately slow down and then try to use the correct word for the situation.
Do you also face similar problem with any sets of words ?

You use the word alternate when it's one after another or taking turns, such as an alternate player, there's always a sequence or pattern of one after another
Alternative on the other hand is used when you have or can make a choice out of several. Example is: We have many alternatives to solve this problem. Again a choice from out of so many choices.
