Do you still use candles at home?
If yes, what are you using them for?
I think most of us do not have to rely on candles for lighting up our house at night.
For my family, we are using candles for worship purpose, especially on those occasions when we have to pray to heaven and ancestors.

Hi Mantis, if we have a power blackout for just an hour, I can assure you that it will become an international news the next day.
It is really unthinkable for the whole country to have blackouts when there is a storm or something.
i think the cost of electricity is high for this reason.
That is why most families do not have candles for such purpose.
Some of them have candles for worship purpose, some buy scented candles for candle-light dinners, but most people do not even have a torch light at home.

Hi Mantis, I think many people must have PC problems as a result of blackout too.
if we are using the computer, and the blackout happens, it may damage our computer.
I think life is very annoying with such disruption.
Pity those who come home late, and in the dark.
It must be very scary to walk along the streets when the streetlight goes out.

Of course yes, when there is power cut/interruption, we have to use candles for a short period of time in order keep the house lighted.
You must also have heard about "Diwali" the festival of lights! which is about to come on October 26, 2011.
On Diwali, we place candles all over the house in order to decorate it and keep it well illuminated.
And yes, on Birthdays, we use candles over the cake

Hi Nishant, yes, candles are mostly used in connection with religion, and worship.
i cannot imagine a temple without candles too.
Over here, Deepavali is a public holiday.
After Deepavali, we have the Malay festival, which comes in the first week of November.
I think if candle manufacturers rely on birthday to sell their candles, they would gone out of business long ago.
But using candles for worship is so much a part of life.

I used to use candles to save on the power bill and for atmosphere in our home. But since having children the worry of an accidental fire concerns me more than saving on the power bill.
We use them now only for things like lighting pumpkins or when our power is out.

Hi 3SnuggleBunnies, is it worth the cost saving?
Over here, the candles are not exactly cheap.
If we use candles instead of switching on the light, we might even have to pay more for the candles.
I think using energy saving light bulb is better in the long run.
Those light bulbs do not emit heat, and use just a fraction of electricity.

Hi Dodo, we do not have blackout problem over here, so most of us never think of keeping candles for that.
We have less than one blackout every ten years, and when it happens, people will demand for an explanation.
It is hard to imagine the whole country suffering from blackout for any reason.
If blackout occurs, the problem usually will resolve very soon.
Most of us live very high up in the high rise apartment.
The problem is that we are very used to the elevator going from level to level, and we are not physically able to walk up 30 flights of stairs to reach our apartment.

No i dont think many people rely on candles as a source of light. The only time they may rely on them is for an emergency such as during a power cut. However in the uk people still buy candles though it is mainly women buying scented candles as there supposed make a nicer atmosphere and be relaxing.I however think its a waste of money and i used to take the mickey out of my aunty when she used to sell them. She used to have candle parties which were like ann summers parties but with candles instead.

Hi Anklesmash, I also think it is a waste of money to buy scented candles.
After all, we can just buy essential oil and add a drop to the pillow or bath water to get the scent.
I think if you can make scented candles, and earn from there, it is a good business idea too.

Of course I need candles. Sometimes when the storm came we'll have a blackout or when there's a maintenance schedule on the electric company and they need too shut down the electricity. We don't have generator at home, so we really count on those candles to give us light.

Hi Loveandpeace, fortunately such thing seldom happens here.
I experience blackout on an average of once every ten years.
That is considered way too much already.
I think the electric companies have backup in case of generator failure or anything else.
For us, candle is not really a necessity for life, but more of accessories for worship purpose.
Hard to imagine going to a temple, and they use electric lamp instead of candles.
The atmosphere will definitely be very different.

We dont use candles at home .Although we always have one somewhere in case there is a power failure at night (which is rear) so we can use it to lite the house before the electricity returns.

Hi Saeedonline, we do not have power failure problems for years, so keeping candles at home for power failure is unrealistic.
On average, power failure takes place about once every ten years!
If not for worship purpose, we would not have candles at home either.
I think in the modern society, hardly anyone wants to use candles for lighting up the house, when electricity is available in abundance.

Similar to you we still use candles and have them during worship. Some can be used when there's no electricity. I also have a collection of scented candles for special ocassions. It can be used in a candle light dinner too.

Yes, during brownouts. But I don't sleep with candle lighting, it is very dangerous. It might caught fire and that would be a big problem. Sometimes, I do light candle for refreshing scent and of course for worship too. Necessary precautions should be done when lighting a candle at home.

Hi R3jcorp, yes, we have to exercise caution when using candles.
Even for worship purpose, most of the shops here sell candles in a cup instead of a tall candle.
At least the risk of fire is minimized.
I do not have the habit of using candles for refreshing scent.
Those candles are very expensive. It is much cheaper to buy the essential oil and just use a drop.

I do love candles but some are just so strong that I can not stand them sometimes. I don't burn them as much as I used to because of that. The worship candles are great because they are not strong in smell or no smell.

Hi Ardoy, fortunately we do not have power interruption caused by typhoon here.
In fact, I experienced blackout only once in ten years, and that is considered too many!
The problem is that blackout caused the elevator to stop working.
Imagine your apartment is on the 30th storey, and you have to walk up all the stairs in the dark!
