too difficult and pretty difficult

what is different between too difficult and pretty difficult?

I have a friend,recently we got some problems,he is a American and one day I just said“i think we are so different and we have different culture,it's too difficult for me to make friend with u" then he was a little frustrated and said ”do you want to give up" I got confused about what he said. Finally he explained to me that too difficult means you can't do that? so can i get more difference between them? thank

Yes, too difficult means it is probably impossible. The word pretty is used to mean "very" but with a slightly less level of difficulty. So pretty difficult would mean it is possible if you try hard enough.
