Yet another post that is from another comment. I was just called ignorant and was pitied because I could care less about the science behind Everything. It was assumed I wasn't living in the real world. really? All I said was I don;'t care about science, period. as you can tell , I do enjoy the internet. I also can not live without cable t.v. or instant replay! But do I know how they work , hell no . I never want to know. I wonder if these two think people have to pass a science test Before they but these products? If so , they will soon be off the market! So I ask you , do you Have to know the science behind things Before you enjoy it?

If I understood everything that I enjoy, I would have to be a super boffin with a brain working overtime. I think it's quite possible to enjoy things without understand exactly how they work. We all enjoy different things, and we all understand different things. Whatever floats your personal boat really.

I do believe a person needs to understand something before he or she can enjoy it. I tried out a computer keyboard at age 16. It wasn't at all like a typewriter which I had been used to. That awful experience put me off the computer for years. I went to university and didn't do any computing there. I preferred to hand write things in those days. When I was in my first teaching post I was told to get competent at computing. I thought help! I asked the IT coordinator to help me learn about computing and he did. I bought a computer through a half price computer for teachers deal. Slowly I got used to using it. I then became competent in the school computer suite. I didn't understand Science when I was at school and I didn't like it at all. I found it challenging to learn to drive and it took me years to pass my practical driving test. I now enjoy driving a car.

The only reason I am here with you is because of computer games. before 2005 I didn't see the point of computers, in fact I thought they would take jobs away. But then at 2005 I lost my mom and my nephew came for a visit.I got interested in a computer game.I got to learn how to work the cursor . And then I got into PCs. I Still don't know how it all works and I don't care! As for driving , I don;'t drive. I know I can't handle it. As for phones I still hate phones. I only use them in emergencies.

I took up engineering in university, so there's always a constant need for me to understand how things work. Specially mechanical things. But, I don't see what 'enjoying it' has anything to do with whatever that is. My 'understanding-it' has more to do with appreciating how things work, and the genious behind it came about in making thigs work.

Well, most people that use todays technology do not know how they work and some do not even know how to use it. But from what I am reading here, maybe the person meant that in order to use the object or technology you must know how to operate it, like the computer and the TV and the instant replay. Not knowing how it works is different from knowing how to work it. I am not a computer tech but I do know how to use my computer, I also know how to de a few things because after owning a Mac for years you just pick these things up.

I think so too. He was just surprised when I said I have no curiosity when it comes to science. Well A difference bewteen us. You are a Mac , I'm a PC, lol!

But that doesn't mean we cannot get along and exist together in this world. There are always differences between people, even twins that were separated from birth. LOL. I had to say that

Let's face it. If a person wanted to understand the science behind everything he uses, he'd not live a very healthy life nor be able to use much. Even a scientist's knowledge is frequently limited to his own specialty. My husband is a physicist, but needs me to help him every step of the way in using a computer. (He understands how the computer's insides work more than I do, but doesn't understand how to use the software that controls everything.) Most of us have very sketchy knowledge about how our food is produced, how milk gets from the cow to the daily case, how cheese is made, or how water gets into our faucets. This morning I had to get a battery of blood tests. I put out my arm, get a needle stuck in, and in a couple of days my doctor will have a lot more information about me than she has now. I have no idea about all that will be done with my blood in the meantime except there will be various tests done on it. The only ones who probably understand most of what they use are the Amish. And when the cyberterrorist start attacking, they will probably be much better off than the rest of us.

The Amish and other people Of the earth are the ones who will survive. Us people On the earth , will perish .That is so cute about Hubby. He knows about the interior but not How to use the software!

No not me. I need Electricity to watch hockey. As a woman who wouldn't take a husband , I would be kicked out anyway.

Sometimes I think we'd all be happier if we lived like the Amish, free from electricity and not dependent on things that use it. They know where their food comes from and their communities are pretty self-suffiient. Their social life is within their families and churches -- not unline. They concentrate on real relationships with real people and have the satisfaction of producing things they can see. Cut off from most media, they are not constantly bombarded with all the troubles of the world they can't do much about anyway, and they take care of their own. They live in beautiful country and they keep it that way. Their lives are simple and probably a lot less stressful than ours.

What does science have to do with the use products. Yes I see where science ha created technology bit I don't think a person had to believe it to know that it works or to use. The only people that won't are the Amish.

Thank you . My point exactly! I was told by a member here that I was ignorant because I didn't care about science and that I was not in the real world. I said I can use products without understnading how they work!

Without knowing How it works, yes! If I Had to pass a test on How Everything works before I use it, I wouldn't be here online! And many would Never buy Any of the stuff we have.

In our Indian language Hindi there is a saying that says' eating the mango is the important thing'.What it means you don`t have to go into how the mango came into being ,like how the seed was planted, how much watering was done, what fertilizer was used, how long it took for the tree to grow, flower and when did the fruit come on the tree and when did it become ripe. One does not have to analyze everything before enjoying it.One should just act and enjoy the fruits without going into the nitty gritty.Hope this answers your query.

I enjoy learning stuff like that but I don't think you have to learn it to enjoy stuff..lol...that's crazy. I think that I would enjoy my computer and TV just as much even if I didn't know why and how they worked.

I think we enjoy a lot of things even if we don't understand it.. maybe especially because we don't understand it. But sometimes there are things that can be really really enjoyed when one understands it.. and if I will compare the two types of enjoyment, probably understanding it and enjoying it would have more depth & perhaps length to it but still they will both give you happiness.

I agree! With some things the enjoyment does increase if you understand it completely.

Hi behen No way. I am quite simpler and like you. Yes, there are a few things that intrigue me and for some of these, I might show an interest to know about how they work but for most of the others... I am quite happy just using them. If I started to "Know the Science..." I am sure, I would end up before I can use the product or service and also, even if I do use the fun would go away. As I would become a bookworm which I am definitely not. ps. those who think that this is the way of the Ignorant - they should also know the saying - "ignorance is bliss" and yes, this is quite correct 99% of the times. and for the 1% - well, people have different tastes and ways. They must be respected and NEVER pitied.

I don't think one must know the science behind something before he or she enjoys it.but if you really love something, you will try your best to know about it.You said you never want to know, that means you don't really like it.

Wrong! I love many a thing and do not know Why it works. I Know How to work it but that is different. At first you said I Don't need to know and then you say I Don't like it Because I don't know. Make up your mind.

You just need to understand what is meant to you to understand. How to change channel, how to plug the wii on etc. Once I tried to understand how computers work, and quit after a couple of days. I guess that person who said that was trying to sound smart, but actually doesnt have a clue of what is talking about.

Most people would not be going understand the detail of science. It's the job that scientists should do. If everyone knows science, do we still need scientist to help us solve problem. Absolutely, no! That's why they have the jobs. Many people that science education is necessary. Well, it's necessary to be scientist, not a regular person. Most people can follow their experience from their own lives and live well. Animals do not know science. Do they die or lack of anything in their lives ? No ! Nature way of living just makes life much better and simple. If someone wants to be pendant, then let he/she be. After all, this person would find out that it just wastes his/her time.

No definitely not and thank God for that! If we really had to know and ‘understand’ the science behind everything, I for one, would be left tearing my hair in trying to understand how a fan works rather than enjoy its cool breeze in summer… Recently, my son is studying electricity at school and he’s lecturing me on all sorts of electric devices, resistance, heat etc…telling me the other day how long the coils in iron and water heaters were and why…just listening to him was confusing enough, I didn’t really want to understand it further.
