i figured i have always restrained myself from buying nice clothes and eating too much good and expensive food so that i can save. i asked myself, what am i saving for. i am not getting married anytime soon and i already have saved enough, i think. so what i am planning to do next pay day is to spend it all and for once never be guilty of spending it all to myself. i wonder if anyone of you mylotters feel this way too?

I am not a big saver. I have a savings account but the contents of it won't allow me to retire anytime soon, haha. I don't focus much on saving money because I focus on the NOW, and for some people that may not be so good but that's how I live. There's a religious root of this attitude---I was raised to think I will not need many riches in this world because I won't be able to bring any of them in the afterlife. Now I have totally quit religion but still I have no big dreams of saving so much money. I spend for my needs, I support my mom. I do have a house that is on mortgage, but it is a simple dwelling. I mean, I could've saved a lot of money and bought a huge house, but what would I need a huge house for? It's good to save money but I think one should also enjoy the fruits of one's labor. For me I'm focusng on travelling. I work hard, I take trips. I save some money, I spend some money. Although, I'm not into things that are outrageously expensive. If I spent a lot of money on, let's say one shirt, when I could've bought 5 shirts that are also of good quality for that amount, then I'd feel guilty.

Yes, don't deprive yourself of your needs, and allow yourself a few treats every now and then. I used to work with somebody who was so stingy that she looked really terrible because she wouldn't even buy things like lotions or moisturizers for her skin, thinking they're a waste of money. I also wasn't able to see her with any new clothes. While I understand that she was a mom and she was saving up all her money for the education of her kid (whom she, for some reason decided to send to a very expensive pre-school) I tried to tell her from time to time that she should also take care of herself.

You are funy but you have a point there. Most financial advisers would say start saving while you are young and you are still single because when you are older and start having a family , your expenses will double. Secure yourself first before indulging to luxury. Well, it is not fair, however, that you are depriving yourself of the things that you need. You can still eat out and buy the goods that you want, you do not have to say no to once in awhile indulgence. But, I do not think that spending all your money is a good thing to do. You can spend some but you must try to save some still even if you think you have saved enough. What have you saved, by the way? Is it enough to build you a house, or for old age, hire someone who'd take care of you or even a decent memorial when your time has to come to an end? I'm not sure but saving doesn't end to what you have right now. I do not deprive myself but I so not spend all the money I have on hand, too.

hello there eureka! thank you for giving me the sides of my situation. i think that i want to be like what you are doing - to not deprive myself from things that i want and need but also taking into consideration having a savings for my future. this sure has enlightened me today

Hello! Good for you that you have more than enough to spend to yourself. Savings is for the future, but if you have already have enough insurance, health insurance they are good in the future. Try to give something to the needy you will feel something different when you do that.

I always tried, to save, some of my money, so I have money, if I'm in an emergency, such as pain. Or is there something that costs money. No harm, buy something you want with the money, the results of your work. But, it would be better, if you save a bit of money you have, for something that is an emergency.

I think everyone has to calculate how much money he will need for the future and try to save this amount of money so one day comes and he will never have to work again , or maybe work but as a hobby , earning less money. I mean , how much money does a man need for a whole year ? He needs 1200$ for medications , 1200$ for a hobby , 600$ social security (in my country we pay every month 40$ social security fee) , 600$ for dog food , 3600$ food and stuff from the super market , internet ...electricity ,$ water , 8400$ rent 1000$ for a vacation. so far it is 16600$ for a year and i'm sure there are many more things I didn't think about like transportation , clothes , helping others... it is like 20,000$ a year , isn't it ? It is almost 1,000,000$ for 10 years , how can anyone save so much money ? I am doomed to work for the rest of my life :(

i dont think that you will have to need a million dollars. dont focus on the number so that you will not be heavily burdened. just focus on the now so that you will get the satisfaction. i also do agree that we have to somehow calculate the money we need for retirement but then we should not dwell on it because we cannot enjoy this moment.

Definitely I'm not, because I'm extravagant. Well it's okay to spend something for ourselves, anyways it's for us, for own good. What is the worth of your money if someone will approach you saying "don't you have any work?". Because, of your looks, I mean your clothes that you're wearing over and over. Go pamper yourself, treat yourself, buy something for you.

i wish i am extravagant like you. i am tired of always thinking of saving and i am not able to buy anything for myself. i will start treating myself as rewards for my hardwork. thank you for your advice!

Well, you need to remember though Saving $$ for a rainy day is always the Best thing to do. Especially in this economy. Even though you are Single now, who knows when you will meet that significant other and the more you know how to plan and save the better off you will be. It is good to be able to do things you enjoy from time to time but to just always blow everything and then have nothing good to show for it when you really need it you would then be kicking yourself for sure. So in all things it takes discipline and balance.

I think that it is important to save money. I'm not saying that you should spend a little bit of money yourself from time to time, but so long as you keep putting money as side, then spend a little never really hurt.

thank you dodo. i will keep that in mind, to spend a little sometime and also not forgetting to save aside a little bit of money for myself in the future. i know that there may be things that need to be spent with a lot of money in the future and i must prepare for it.

Occasionally indulge yourself, by buying items that you want, but do not overdo it. You also have to, set aside your money.

We only have the present. The past is already gone and we don´t know how much future we will have. Although I don´t mean by this not to be a little aware that we must save a bit for a rainy day, I do think that we must have some pleasures in our lives. One thing is to go on a shopping spree until your credit card is exhausted and quite another is to buy something nice for yourself once in a while. The same happens with food and with everything. There must be a balance in life, in everything. Have a nice day!

thank you marguicha! yes, i think having a balance in life will arm us to have a wonderful life. making sure that i will not deprive myself from the things that i need and want (once in a while) and still making sure that i am able to save for a rainy day. thank you once a day and happy mylotting!

I think as long as you saved up your money for something and you're not going into debt to buy something you want, then you shouldn't feel guilty about buying something.

Yep that's an important point, don't go into debt. Spend the money you earned and feel good about it. Spending money you don't have (as in credit cards) can lead to problems if you are not careful.

thank you guys, i will spend my hard earned money and i will try not to be guilty about it. i dont have credit cards so i am kind of safe from debt. happy mylotting!

I always think that saving money is important in my life, at any condition. Because we never know about what happen in the future, we never know if something bad will happen in the future. There's always a possibility that my area being affected by natural disaster. There's always a possibility that me or my family got sick, and we need a lot of money to heal that. There's always a possibility that I will lose my job. And many more.. It doesn't mean I have to be much stingy. I shouldn't save money excessively and spend it wisely. But, in my opinion, it is better to make some precaution and preparation. Because we never know what future hold for us..

i like your opinion varier! yes, we must better be prepare for any thing that will happen in the future and as part of that preparation we must be able to have a satisfactory amount of money that can fund whatever may happen to us. i would love to be able to practice saving and at the same time not being guity when i will buy something for myself

If i were you, i would live my life to the fullest but still save some money incase of emergencies, we don't really know what will happen tomorrow so better be prepared. People's wants are unlimited but we only have a limited resources or money. We must plan how much we will save and how much we will use to buy our own luxury.
• Philippines
14 Oct 11
right, we have unlimited wants. for now there are things that we may not need yet but then i realized that sooner or later we will have things that we eventually need and so we must be able to save a little bit of today for tomorrows use. thank you for the advice viney!

your welcome kat its true that we may not need somethings now but who knows if an emergency comes and we need that thing and we don't have the money for it then it may become life threatening isnt it? We must be always prepared for the worst, not because we are safe now doesn't mean we will still live for the next hour or so.

if i had lots of money saved, i'd be very happy. then i could afford college haha though someday, i do sure hope i'll have some extra money to go buy something ridiculously expensive. there's got to be some sort of accomplished feeling associated with that, right?

i think yes, being able to buy something which we love and is very expensive may boost our confidence and have that feeling of accomplishment with it. i hope that i can also experience that someday. may we continue to persevere and earn that money for our future plans. happy mylotting littlestudent

Once I was a miser and saved every cents I earned. I deprived myself of a quality life as I fear that my bank account will turn red if I go on spending spree. Something suddenly struck my mind when I see people dying young who might not have seen much of the outside world let alone enjoy their earthly existence. I slowly let go of being a miser and try to make full use of what I got to entertain myself by travelling and dining in fine restaurants. My bank balances might not be too healthy but I am happy to journey this life fulfilled. We passed this world but once so why not enjoy our life while we still can.

i was a miser for years too zandi! i think we also have the same realization. what if we die young then who will enjoy our hard earned money. you are correct, we only pass this world once and so we must enjoy it. let us balance saving and also spending

I wouldnt dip into your savings keep that for when you need something. But if you have a lot saved up then what you make from now on you could splurge on and enjoy it. I'm glad that you have enough saved up that can afford to do that. It took me so many months to save up enough money to get myself a used vehicle. I found one really cheap and am going to keep saving up so that way when I need another one a year or so down the road I will be able to afford to get a little bit nicer one.

i think making a balance between saving money and being able to buy for oneself is the key. we should not save everything that we earn, instead we should also reward ourselves for the hardwork
• Philippines
13 Oct 11
I also experience this one. However, I end up nothing sometimes. Great that I am still depending on my mom with my expenses. I can still run to her and ask. But I think I should not depend that much, right. I must be responsible enough in dealing with money. So that I would be able to practice this kind of habit. That is why, I don't agree with your statement. Maybe it's applicable to you since you have saved enough. right?
• Philippines
16 Oct 11
yes, we each have different situations karstine. for you, i think you are right that you must be responsible in dealing with money. for me, i have already deprived myself of my wants for years just so that i can save. i think i will also reward myself sometimes

Hi Katrina :) I think that is a good idea . After saving your money for a long time, you have to have time for yourself. Time to buy the things you wanted. I do that sometimes. After saving for a couple of months, I will set a month wherein that whole salary is only for me. Because if I don't do that, I will be tired of working. It feels like I work but I don't feel my accomplishments. So once in a while is okay.
• Philippines

hello mariahhhh and thank you for agreeing with me. i like your style by the way, making sure that once in a while you are able to spend your salary guilt free. i think i might just do that too.
