Going Abroad

Philippines

Hi! I'm leaving my country soon to work abroad, particularly in Saudi Arabia. I know, it's the strictest nation and I'm kinda anxious about leaving. The thing I hate most is packing. What to pack and not? Do you have some tips? Thanks!

Right at this time, unless you are an arab, I do not think this is a very good idea. All of the Mideast is in a turmoil right now. Many countries have put out warnings to their people about travelling to Saudi Arabia and other countries.

It will not make much difference what you wear as most Arab countries expect women to wear 'burkhas'!

Ah yes. There's gender inequality going on. I hate it.

Wow you should be excited by now. Another journey and adventure of your life. Well, honestly I am not really into packing. Well I think that is because I have not found myself packing for overseas yet. Well as an advise try to pack the most basic and necessary things that you will be needing. Like your clothes, personal hygiene like soap, toothbrush, soap. You do not need to bring your whole house with you unless it is required by your job. well then God bless to your journey!

You need to bring a good amount of money, at least SR1000 (that would be around less than USD300). You really don't have to pack that much clothes, clothing in KSA is pretty cheap, (if you're the inexpensive type). But one thing I must inform you, KSA work culture is so, so much different. From all of my years working in KSA, if there's one lesson I learned, this is it...Don't always believe anything they say. You can give them the benefit of the doubt, but don't always be hopeful, you will need a ton of patience working with different nationalities. There is an awful lot of discrimination in the workplace. I'm not scaring you, I just want you to be informed.

I have never thought of working abroad. I really fear of the unknown and would not take risk of the unpredictable political problems of the place. I've heard so many bad happenings to foreigners working abroad. I feel comfortable in my own turf. Anyway, working abroad is a challenge especially if the pay is good. Take only the necessity for the duration of your stay there.

Thanks. I just want to try it for experience. I mean it's like stepping out of your comfort zone but if you pull it off then it's gonna be really rewarding. I would like to settle in our city after I'm done with my contract.

It depends on what region of Saudi Arabia you are going. Some parts of Saudi Arabia like the Eastern provinces have really hot weather and some part have really cold ones.If you're not sure better to bring some thick and long clothes. If you are a woman you should also bring some outer black clothes called Abaya.Women are not allowed to go outside the house wearing ordinary clothes. You are not also allowed to bring any religious materials except Islamic in Saudi Arabia.Liquors and any form of gamble is strictly not allowed.Don't forget to bring extra cash in dollars or Saudi Riyals.
