English is the global language for communication in business, the holiday industry, computing, aviation and more.
About 400 million people speak English as their first language, 750 million people use English as a second langauge on a daily basis and 375 million people speak English as a foreign language. (source: language facts - Wikipedia)
My statement is:
English is the only language worth learning.
People who speak English as their first language need not learn a foreign language
Do you agree or disagree, why or why not?

English is worth learning, but it it is not very good to say that it is the only language worth learning.I think every language are of the same importance. What I mean is no language is superior to another because they all serve the same purpose-to link everyone so they are all worth learning. Also according to my studies, english is not the world's most spoken language.I remember it is Mandarin or Chinese.:-)

Chinese happens to be the most spoken language simply because, there are so many of them in this world. The more chinese there are, the more people will be speaking their language.
However, it is the english-speaking ones who are exercising so much more influence as to the global field of sorts of transactions. Encyclopedias and other reading materials are readily available in english. The persons who have developed the internet are mostly english speaking guys.
This is the reason why english is the more spoken language in different countries throughout the world although lots more in numbers are into chinese.

I live here in the Philippines, and english is our secondary language here.I admit I really love english.
You are right! Most of the books and stuff in the internet are written in english.People here in our country easily learn english because english uses Roman letters and has the same sentence structuring as our native language,Filipino.

Wow there are many people who think the way you do.
DO you know that the the most perfect language in the world was and is Sanskrit, the mother of all languages in the world, which is also the oldest language in the world with proper grammar?
Do you know that English became popular only because of British people invading all over the world and forced their language and culture on them?
Do you know that Greek is the greatest European language?
Do you know that majority of the English words are actually taken from other European languages?

Whenever I had the occasion to interview candidates for my Company I used to take into account how fluent they were in the English language and their accent also did influence me although that was not necessarily a criteria to select a candidate.

At present yeah english is very much worthy to learn because in my country a lot of unemployed people are about to find job only because of their ability to handle English since English speaking countries outsource some of their entry level jobs to our country. But i cant agree that english is the only language worth learning because i speak 5 languages. But as a foreign language,it is the best for now.

Hi Ravi, let me put this straight. I started this discussion to see what people think about this. If I had simply given my personal point of view there would have been no discussion.
You are perfectly right English is a mixture of Germanic and romance languages. That is why English has such a huge vocabulary. William the Conqueror was the first Norman king and when he defeated the Anlo-Saxons in 1066, the Norman aristocracy became the new governing class in Britain. They introduced many words of French / latin origin.

Here in India fortunately a lot of emphasis is put on the need to learn English as it is an International language and your statistics clearly show how important it is in every walk of life. But in order to be able to communicate with those who do not speak English it is necessary that one learns other languages too. When I was on holiday in Europe for example I had a tough time as I noticed the French insist on speaking only French and so do the Germans. This could be the case elsewhere too.

Learning langauges is absolutely essential, and it shouldn't be only English. Especially when travelling in Europe it is very practical to be able to speak French and German. The younger generation usually speaks good English the older people often speak only their own langauge.

I think Chinese (Cantonese, Mandarin) and India are the most spoken language in the world. Mandarin is worth learning too as most of ASIAN countries speaks Chinese. I think it would be good if your a native English speaker to learn Chinese than Spanish. Just my thought.

You are right Chinese is the most spoken language on earth. Then there is a large gap, the next languages are Spanish and English, followed by Bengali and Hindi.
It would be much more logic, if Chinese were the global language. Now that China is economically becoming stronger, the Chines language is also becoming more important.
In a hundred years time Chinese may have become the lingua franca.

Yeah, we may say that almost every country there are Chinese residents or businessmen. But it's a must for these Chinese people to understand even a little English to be able to communicate with the local people.
And English being the universal language they can at least understand each other.

I agree. Chinese is very important nowadays. It is very important in my country as well because many of the businesses here have Chinese suppliers. I say that in order to advance in your career, you need to study both English and Chinese, which is exactly what most of the people in my country are doing now.

to some extent, I don't approve of your idea. While English now is widely used and has become the international language all over the globe, this situation would change in coming years. As you know, an increasing number of people are learning Chinese at present, to acquire the most splendid language in the universal as well as its culture. That is to say, Chinese without doubts is bound to be the most important and most widely used language in the future------a universal language will arise.

I agree with you. Actually English has become to be a global language. Since most English countries are much more powerful and therefore its language has a big effect on the world. Here we have to study English as our foreign language since we are little. And it seems you can find a good job if you learn it well. It becomes to be a tool when you apply for a job.
I love China

Hello mivvvy, english is indeed the most important language for today´s life, but it is not he only onw worth learning one, in fact, any language takes us close to the people who speaks it, and it culture and values, and this are worth reasons to learn another language, in my opinion. As for me, I am learning russian, a though one, specially being spanish my mother´s language,:), this is only because I feel atraction for Russia its culture and people. I believe that everyone of us should learn another language, at least one, even those, who speaks english as their first language.

Hello Albto, Russian is indeed a beautiful language and very complicated, even more so than Spanish. I tried to learn some Spanish, vocabulary is not difficult because I can speak French, but Spanish verbs are complicated. The difference between ser and estar is very difficult to learn. Good luck with your Russian. Will you go to Russia to practise?

Well, if the person speaking English as their first language does not travel to other countries, where English is not spoken well, then there's no need for him to learn another language.
However for one traveling frequently to a certain country where English is not spoken, then there's a need to learn how to speak their language too. That way, you will both understand each other.

My dear friend I am able to communicate to the world because I studied English language. My father used to insist on speaking English in the house and that is why I am abl to write and speak proper English. I am actually grateful to the British for having united the very many princely states of India and that was possible only through English language. Otherwise imagine me , a south Indian trying to communicate in tamil or malayalam to urdu or bengali or telugu people in India itself. It would be like a game of actions. Chinese may be large in number but how can we learn complex diagrams which represent alphabet. English language will continue to rule no matter what. I agree that other cultures including India and others are beautiful but for practical reasons English is more simple compared to others and therefore more convenient.

Sorry no I don't agree with you. This would mean we all would give up our culture as well. Each language is a part of a culture which includes sayings/expressions that belongs to that culture. Also there are words/expressions in our language you won't find in any other vica versa.
Also I do believe that learning different languages and how to pronounce it is for the education and development of speach and brains as well.
I don't think native English speakers are really learning that much other languages at all.
In our country we have to learn next to our own language also English and at least 1 other foreign language.
Also in some professions (like medical) you need to learn some other languages as well.It makes it easier to make the link to some diseases or treatments.
Learning an foreign language is much more as just learning how to say: how are you doing today and I am fine. You learn about cultures as well.
Personally I think many people don't speak English that well at all. Seems to me that level should be much higher. I assume the teachers are not that great either.
But that is the same with many other things kids learn at school nowadays.

All your points are valid. Learning foreign languages exposes us to other cultures and the bonus is they sharpen our mind.
In the medical profession learning latin is essential, but these days students can go to medical school without knowing any latin. Latin and also Greek are subjects that have almost disappeared from the curriculum, at least in the Netherlands and probably in other countries as well.
Before the Mamoetwet was introduced in the Netherlands in 1968, the Dutch learnt three foreign languages: English, French and German. (plus Greek and latin for grammar school students.) This is no longer the case. English is the only obligatory language to learn. I am glad I finished secondary school before the Mamoetwet was introduced.
I could not agree more when you say that 'many people don't speak English that well'. I am (or rather was, now retired) a teacher of English in Higher Education and can give you many examples of first year students who think they understand English, but in fact don't.
Did you leave school before or after the mamoetwet?

I don't really agree. But unless you do NOT plan to visit other countries, and you plan to stay in the US your whole life, then I guess other languages are unimportant.

beside to your country language, english is the best language because it is a global language, its like a requirement to all the people in the world. i agree with you because its a universal language all the meetings, press conference, contacting a foreign people you must use english , even in movies all the world country film have a english subtitle did you see that ? that is why english is the most important language.

It is true that one who has mastered english, either as a main or second language, is definitely at an advantage in communication skills.
However, it will also be good to learn other languages. At times, we go to different places other than those wherein there are readily people availale who can understand English.
This will be the time wherein an English-speaking individual will have to exert some effort to learn the basic language of the people in the area.
In the case of inter-racial marriages, wouldn't it be good if the english-speaking guy exert some effort to learn the language of his partner? Well, I do believe that it is well worth it.

I beg to disagree my friend. English may be considered the global communication as you have said but I think learning Spanish will be an advantage too since I think it's the second most spoken language followed by Mandarin or Chinese dialects.
English speaking people must also learn or understand other languages too like Spanish or Chinese and vice versa.

English is surely a language that you have to know as more common and acceptable. It is used in most countries of the world and it is the main advantage for ala kind of jobs. Nevertheless, things change rapidly and probably we will see another language to come front... It depends on the financial circumstances in the world.... I am sure that many people will start speaking Russian day by day...
