Illness has made me realize how much we take our breathing system for granted

I have been keeping bad health for the past two weeks and only for the past two days I am getting slightly normal; it was a chest infection and this time I just could not breathe; it has not happened earlier and it was pretty scary. For the past two days , after some medication and rest I have been able to breathe properly. I feel as though I am just bouncing once I started to breathe properly. It is such a huge relief. This made me realize how much we take our breathing system for granted. We do not give a moment’s thought to it when we are breathing normally.

Good to know that you are back breathing normally. Yes kala not just breathing but we take for granted so many things. As you know my accident made me realise this and now I am forever in the mood to celebrate as there are so many little things around me which I took for granted all along.

It is sometimes better that we lose something and when we get it back it is a different kind of experience an experience that keeps one forever in the attitude of gratitude.

Hi Kala! Hope you are better know after your illness. I would like to say that each of body organ, internal as well as external are very important. Each organ has its specific role in our body. We just can not live our life properly, even if one of the organs does not function properly. Our carelessness towards our body and its parts, could be very dangerous. We must always take care of God's gift i.e. our body.

I am getting better Deepak and once I started breathing well, I realised how much we take this for granted; this was the first time I got really breathless and was wheezing too.I have seen my sisterinlaw suffer badly and she does yoga and meditation and breathing exercises. I should also cultivate some discipline and do this. WHat you say is right. We cannot and must not neglect our body.

Yeah, it very true that when we fall ill, then only we realize the importance of sound health. Yoga and breathing exercises are good for our health and we should space some time to go for it.

I think that there is an important lesson to learn from illness, and that is how to look after ourselves better. If we take care of mind and body, then illness can be reduced siginifantly. I practice meditation daily and are aware of the types of foods that I eat and through this discipline, I tend to feel more relaxed, and can avoid many illnesses that get triggered by stress. I am not completely free from illness, but I feel that I am learning a lot from being disciplined to manage my negative stressful situations better. _Derek

You are right, we take our body for granted until something isn't working properly. I am disabled and have no balance at all. I can't do half the things that I used to be able to do. I never thought about it until I couldn't do it any longer. Every once in awhile I get back aches, and am always surprised how any movement at all involves your back. Just twisting a little bit or getting up from an unarmed chair was out of the question and I take it for granted when my back doesn't hurt.

Oh I am so sorry to hear about your problem.Only when we really are unable to do something we realise how indispensable our health is. We tend to take it for granted. Hope you improve soon and get back to normal.

This is very true. In fact, this is also the wisdom behind any smoker. One tends to overlook the importance of taking care of our respiratory system.

Dear friend, Hope you are fine now. I feel these kinds of unhealthy things would make our health and mind a mess and after getting out of it would be a great releif. Moreover the value of the health is much known when one gets unhealthy. Get well soon.....

Thank ou and I am better now. What you say is so valid; our mind would also become a mess in the face of weakness ; only when we fall sick we get the motivation to take good care of our health.

Hi kala, hope all ok now, do take care , when we are unwell, everything seems to suddenly become more important, even the everyday things that we take for granted...I had a fracture on my right wrist and hand sometime back ( 4 years ago) before mylot...my hand was in plaster for about 8 weeks and it was agony not being able to anything with my hands.I used to dream about suddenly being able to comb my hair and cut vegetables etc;....I agree with you that we take most things in our lives for granted !

Dear Kalav Reading that I am reminded of my mom who had got into this lung infection quite recently and I can understand the pain and agony that you and you family might have suffered. I hope you are better today than before and improving by the day. The doctors and even we as humans rarely think out about the ill consequences until they happen to us or anyone known and worst of all... we have the worst of memories and we start to forget all this once it gets over and we are back to at last normal health. I wish you a speedier recovery and good health. Take care.

Each breath we take is a gift. If we just think about it as you said, if we stop breathing we will die. It is simple yet few people appreciate it. God gave us the gift of life, and it is not right that we take such things for granted.

It just started as an allergy and I was suffering from a cold; I started having usual antiallergy pills and it seemed alright. Later, one day I suddenly started wheezing and had mild fever too; I went to the doctor and he said that if it is a common cold it would respond to allergy but this was in the chest . After a course of antibiotics and asthaline and good rest I am on my road to recovery. I have had cold and sore throat infections earlier, but this time it was different and thereore I went to the doctor immeiately.

It's a good thing it was given the proper diagnosis by the doctor. Sometimes, we do take for granted some simple cough and colds that we would treat it with the usual medicines that we are taking to cure it. However, only when we feel that it's not getting better that we would feel the need to go to a doctor. Well, i guess this usually happens to all of us.

I'm glad you're ok! I do agree though, we often take our health for granted until it's gone. I have pretty bad allergies and sinus pressure, and a lot of my family members have asthma. As a result, I'm always terrified or extremely bothered if I can't breathe properly. If you have this problem again, you can also get a humidifier and Eucalyptus oil. It makes a huge difference! Also, if you have an oil warmer and you heat up Eucalyptus oil in your bathroom while you shower, it helps you breathe more easily if you have a lung infection.

as someone who has a good bit of pain, and for years had migraines as part of my day to day existence, I do not take any part of not hurting or any other times of feeling good for granted. I do agree, however, many people do, especially young people... well, they too will (hopefully) get old someday...

Although sometimes I forget, usually I do think about my breathing and also do some breathing exercises every day. The Latin word for breath meant life and truly good breathing helps one to have a happier and more productive life. Glad you are well again!

That's true breathing,is such an important part of our body process but yet we took it for granted. Deep breathing to be particular is so underrated, many of us don't now how beneficial proper deep breathing is for our body, here's a link for those interested http://www.onepowerfulword.com/2010/10/18-benefits-of-deep-breathing-and-how.html , after I read this article I always take some deep breath when i'm not doing something.

Deep breathing is always good for the system. Pranayama has also multitude benefits and it removes all toxins from the body. I should do this but I lack discipline. THanks for the response and sorry for the late comment.

That is true, we never know the value of the organs that we have until when we get sick. It is good to take care of all the systems in our body as much as we can, once one of them is affected, surely you will not be the same. It is such uncomfortable situation. Thanks that you seek medical advice on time. Quick recovery.
