Reminiscing about the Golden Girls

Although I'm fairly young, I grew up watching Golden Girls reruns on TV. I loved the antics of Rose, Blanche, Dorothy, and Sophia. First, Estelle Getty, passed away, then Bea Arthur, then Rue McClanahan. I'm really happy for Betty White as her career seems to have taken in a surprising upswing!
Have you watched the Golden Girls? Do you feel a connection to the show? Have you watched any other shows that the actresses have performed in (e.g. Maude for Bea Arthur, Mary Tyler Moore Show for Betty & Rue, etc.)? What do you think of Betty White's recent comeback? I personally find her absolutely hilarious - they don't make comedians like her anymore!

Thank goodness for reruns. These older shows are always fun to watch, all four dames had excellent comedic timing, and unfortunately 3 of them are no longer with us, but in television and other they live on. That said I read once or saw it in an interview a few years back that the original idea was that Rue McClanahan play Rose and Betty White play Blanche, I wonder if it would have worked out exactly the same. The reason it worked out the way it did is that Betty White had played a vamp in the previous show she was in and Rue McClanahan had played scatter-brained character in her previous show, not to repeat their roles they changed them shortly before the final contracts were signed. I think each role was tailored for each actress over time and they seemed to really have fun playing with their characters eccentricities. I thought Betty White was heading for the less comedic roles, things like Lake Placid which is a alligator attacks movie, which she did give an interesting twist, the calmness with which she describes what happened to her husband in the movie is creepy and fascinating at the same time, I am really happy her career rebound and she is just as popular now as she was when she was younger. One thing I always found interesting is that Estelle Getty who played Sofia, was actually a year younger then Bea Arthur.

I totally agree - I was so surprised when I found out that Rue and Betty had originally had each other's roles. I didn't know that Betty had played a vamp at her previous show though - I thought she was always the goody-two-shoes. That said, I think it turned out great! I can't imagine Rue as Rose and Betty as Blanche. They were all perfect for their roles.
I wish they still made shows like this! Can you imagine a network producing a show about 4 old ladies after retirement NOW? haha

True, the closest to having older actors in shows is like the grumpy or kindly grandparent/relative or neighbour. It seems that television does not find an interest in the lives of the older characters especially in comedy. The closest to a comedy show with older actors is S#*! My Dad Says which was cancelled, and I haven't as yet seen Hot in Cleveland with Betty White - don't know what type of character she plays.

Betty White is how old ? - 85 ?
Just goes to show that life isb't over until it's over
Good on her !!
I think that The Golden Girls was one of those shows that had everythung just right - good writing and performers who had been in the business for so long that they had their timing right , they knew how to feed off each other and they also had the respect of their peers
