Do activsts have the right to protest without police intervention? It seems that now adays even when people are protesting peacefully the police are adament in removing protesters by extreme measures such as tear gas. Does this infringe on the basic right of free speech? When is it accetable to break up protesters?

This problem seems to be going on all over the world and the reason is because there has been so many non peaceful protests. Protests start out being peaceful and end up not being peaceful or ruined by a non peaceful group that uses the situation to cause havoc, damage sometimes human hurt. The police do react in crowds and sometimes badly but they have pressures too, when really their purpose should be to protect everyone. In my opinion I think activists need to come up with new approaches away from the police.
This is only half the problem. Activists need to come up with solutions to problems as well as just protesting. Think about it. What does the average person know or understand about what is going on? They should so that public opinion will cause change. Some things are very complicated and there are so many sides to consider. What is the alternative to existing problems? Who has better answers besides the current politician? In my mind taking to the streets to protest is becoming less effective for bringing about change. I wish I had the perfect solutions but working with the media and inside political forums that will activate alternative thinking, might be a better avenue for activist intervention than street protests.
If I am just dreaming of an utopia solution because I believe the only method that will actually work is a peaceful one of constructive debate then please excuse my response.
