Printer Ink Doesn't Last 5 Minutes!

I can't remember where I bought the so-called high-yield HP black printer ink but I reckon it was probably a site like Amazon. The thing is, it wasn't "high-yield" at all! According to the description (on HP packaging) I should be able to print 600 A4 pages off without the ink running out. Oh, really? More like 200, if that. John works in the printing industry so knows a thing or two about ink. He reckons that - even though it SAYS it's an HP product it may actually be a bog-standard refill..and there is no way I can prove it one way or another. Anyway, I've ordered another one from a well-trusted electronics company so I'm hoping that one will last longer. It's a bit more than I paid last time but it is reduced in price..which helps lol. What's the betting my colour one will run out next?

We have a small HP printer that we do not use anymore as it used to chew through the ink. We were getting the HP stuff at first, but then we started getting refills that were cheap, but it still went through ink like crazy. So then we bought a Kyocera laser printer which is much better for what we do. It cost a lot more than the cheap printers and the laser cartridges are pretty expensive up front but they last for months and months instead of a week or two. We went through a few multi function printers before getting this one. Multi function printers just seem to have too many issues with them. We do not have a copier now, but we do not need one. And we have this really simple little USB portable scanner which does an awesome job.

Yes, I've found that. Mine can print, copy and scan (and has a little screen on the front) so when it works, it's marvellous BUT feed in paper it doesn't like and it chews it up like a basic printer would. Bloody thing is crap lol. I have never heard of Kyocera but it sounds impressive! I have used laser printers at work in the past and they are brilliant, I agree. I would've bought one with my birthday money in March but, unfortunately, the colour laser printers were out of my price range then (over 70 quid, my maximum) and, annoyingly, I've just found a Samsung Laser Colour printer on Amazon for LESS than £60 as it's been greatly reduced. I think I'll kill myself!!

Kyocera are more of a professional brand. You don't find their stuff in the mainstream department stores. Don't you hate it when you find the perfect product too late!

I don't think any of them last as long as they say, real or not. I have a Kodak all in one printer, the ink is cheap and it does last pretty long. But Not like it says it should. Also, the longer you don'y use it, it does dry out. I don't know how much HP ink cartridges are, but I am sure it adds up.

The price can vary wildly, depending on where you get them from. Even on the HP website they show prices from various shops that vary wildly. Why don't HP set the price at, say £15 and leave it at that?

Want to know why? I'll tell you. They don't set the price because by not setting a price, they can increase the price at any time they want to make a larger profit from it. They don't care if you need the ink for any purpose, they are just looking at their bottom line. Thats why these companies keep shipping jobs to other countries, they get very cheap labor and they make more money. Also they make lots of products in china, paskistan and other countries, so the quality is less then it should be. But they do not care. As long as they keep making more and more.

Wow. I think original HP inks come with one of those "Original" shiny stickers. Did the ink you bought have that?

Original huh? That IS odd. Too bad there's no way for HP to confirm it :(

Oh yeh, original packaging and everything. The thing is, I don't think the ink was filled to the top and there is no way of checking it out until it's been used, which in my case, was definitely NOT after 600 pages!

I know the feeling, but I do print out a lot of images. There are certain colours that seem to last forever, yellow for instance and ones that disappear the fastest are black and blue. I have never had them refilled at those recycling stores because a friend told me that for normal printing they are fine but in images they tend to have issues with the colour sometimes being a little off, but it does work out cheaper. I also notice that if I don't shake them well before using them they tend to not use all their ink properly. The worst printer I had was one of those that has just one cartridge for everything, the black would run out and I found it a waste to through out a cartridge that still had all the other colours, I would print out texts in weird colours to use up the ink, it was quite annoying.

Do I, it still annoys me no end that the first printer I bought several years ago, it was quite expensive but I thought it was worth it at the time. Two weeks later the price went down 75€, that is the price of a cheaper scanner/printer now. It did last a long time and it did print beautifully, but the cheaper ones would do the same I suppose. I have noticed that laser printers are getting cheaper, even colour laser printers. They are starting to be a viable option.

At a place I worked at they had a colour laser printer (an HP one funnily enough) and the ink lasted ages, even though many people in the office were using it. That was way back in the early 2000s so I'm wondering if laser printers are more efficient? They've certainly come down in price and have become smaller in size, which was an issue back then. Unfortunately, when I got this inkjet with my birthday money in March there were no cheap laser printers available..but there are now. Isn't that annoying?!

Although right now those inkjet printer can be give out for free, what makes money is the ink. People have to pay for the ink in order to make those printer to be able to print. I hate that. For my inkjet printer, I have to keep order probably every 2 months, since I don't print a lot too, but it will dry out quick too. It give me a bit of headache on this one.

My present set of inks has lasted a very long time, I'm pleased to say. Mainly due to hardly ever printing anything, to be honest. I did a bit of troubleshooting a few months ago whereby the ink cartridges re-set themselves (or something like that) and the printer is performing a lot better than it did previously. How I love it when something works properly!

I am astonished at what Printer Ink Doesn't Last 5 Minutes! It is no doubt counterfeit product. At present,It is hard to distinguish the genuine stuff from poor quality one ,if you don't use it.Sometimes ,the counterfeit product has better packaging than genuine one.To my shame,my out of date computer hasn't equipped with a printer, much less colour ink.

I agree. I know mine will run out at any time now. I need to buy me some before it happens but I am trying to only buy things we have to have for now so we can save for Christmas.

Hi Janey, I have all given up on buying original inks for my printer as I have never found one that lasts as long as it says on the packaging. I now buy inks from a site called inkredible.co.uk. They are not original cartridges, but I am hard-pressed to notice a difference from what I want to print. I use a Canon and it is quite old now and still going strong. I find that it rarely, if ever blocks even using the non-standard inks. I used to use a Epson, but even with original inks in,the cartridges would often dry out and then not print correctly. My Canon can sit there for weeks not being used and will print perfectly first time. I don't tend to print photos anyway, but have done so with good enough results. I keep photos on a memory sticks that I can play back through my TV. If I do print one, I will get it in Boots or some other place if I wanted a professional print-off as I feel that inkjets, being water based can cause problems if a moist hand happens to touch the ink.. _Derek

Tell me about it! When Flojo went missing a few months ago I used this printer and John's printer to print out little flyers for our neighbours and the ink in each didn't last five minutes. It was great when Flojo was found underneath a parked car, some 13 hours later (as a result of our campaign) but it was so annoying that the ink ran out so fast...but we did print a photo of her besides our description underneath, so that's probably what did it. We go to Jessops if we want a professional job done regarding photos..it also keeps them in work. I don't think printers have moved forward as opposed to how much ink they use, from 15 years ago. I know Kodak inks are supposed to last the longest but ALL inks should be like that. I wish someone would invent an alternative to ink. That would shake the industy up wouldn't it?

Thanks for posting this Janey, I was going to start buying those refilled cartridges, but after your experience I decided just to stay where I'm buying them at right now !

Well, mine was an original HP product but, with it being in a black, plastic casing, I reckon even HP are skimping with the amount of ink they actually put in it. I can't prove this of course, but I definitely didn't print 600 pages on one cartridge, that's for sure. I guess many companies are ripping us off.

That's why it's cheaper to buy a lazer printer for black and white and save the expensive inkjet for colour. My inkjet was very cheap - £38 - but the replacement inks cost almost as much again! I buy cheap ones off E Bay now and they work fine. An £80 lazer lasts at least 2500 pages and costs around £30 for replacement toner. But it hardly ever seems to need replacing unlike the inkjet.

Funny you should say that. I was on one of my favourite sites (Amazon) when I researched everything made my Samsung..'cos I'm sad that way lol. Anyway, one of their products is a colour laser printer and it's been drastically reduced to about 50 odd quid. This is well-cheap for a laser printer, especially a colour one. Perhaps Father Christmas will bring me one?

You're quite right about the ink, and it really doesn't feel as though mine lasts for very long either. You have to make sure that you're printing something everyday, otherwise you might start to find that your ink simply dries up rather than actually running out, so you wouldn't get the most out of your printer. One page using a tiny bit of each colour would help you in this case. I think it's very silly how much printer ink costs, because I don't understand how a little bit of ink could possibly cost the amount of money that we seem to be having to pay for it in this day and age.

It's not like a pen ink cartridge is it? Even my rollerball pen refill didn't last as long as when they first came out..80s I think, the Parkers. I could write to my heart's content way back then but now..no way. I guess the quality must be going down.
16 Oct 11
I couldn't agree with you more and what is worse is thank ink is so expensive now. I had to laugh when I realised that with my previous HP printer (using a Canon now) it worked out cheaper to buy the same printer again which came with ink than to by just the refills. It's now got to the point that I do my best not to print anything because the cost is so prohibative and found myself using pen and paper for certain things rather than typing them up and printing them out. And as for printing photos I haven't checked but I reckon it could be cheaper to take them in file form to a shop to print off than doing it yourself.

Yes, we go to Jessops if we want anything printed off professionally (which is rare, actually) as they use really good photo paper in there. I can't remember how much it costs for..say an A4 size, but it isn't bad, price-wise. No doubt photo paper would jam in my unpredictable printer which would annoy me no end, as that in itself is expensive to buy. There are certain papers it doesn't like and chews it up on a regular basis..this from a machine that's only about 6 months old.

I've stopped buying printer inks. Although I have one unopened cartridge in my drawers somewhere, I try not to use it. It would be opened only in cases of emergencies (like a school project for my kid etc.) They are so unreliable. They sell the printers really cheap, and it's the ink where they milk you. And when you go to re-fillers, they're so unreliable too. Last time I had one re-filled, all the ink was a shade of maroon!

Printer ink is a rip-of. I had a Canon printer which used separate cartridges for colours. If one ran out I could not use the other colours, not even just black. I thought to be clever and buy a printer that only prints in black, but they don't exist. I now bought a new HP printer which has one black cartridge and one for all colours. I don't know yet how many pages I can print, as it is still too nes.

My HP printer is like that too but the black one always runs out first, even though I don't print a lot. It's so annoying. A colour laser printer may be the way to go (as they are coming down in price and are more efficient) but the cartridges for those can be expensive..even close to the price of the machine in some cases.
