My husband and I are saving money for buying a laptop in 2012 january. My question is by the time we save, will technology advance so much that it is not wotth investing? Should we wait before we spend a lot of money on a laptop? or will laptop prices decrease?

I just may suggest one thing:
Don't buy gadget because of trends or because of its advanced technology. Just buy one that meet your needs :).
And in most time, laptop's price would be decreased by the time goes. The newest version will turn to old version by the time goes.. Technology is still improving, there might be a better or cheaper one appears in the future.
Just find one that meet your needs :).
Cheers :)

I would never buy a laptop because i know the advantages of desktop over laptop. But if you want a portable thing to check mails and other purposes then there is no option but to buy laptop.Even netbook can do the same purpose i guess. For the price of a cheap laptop you can get a desktop with very good configuration. Also it is easy to replace parts in a desktop i guess.

I also plan to buy a new laptop next year, I'm just waiting for Microsoft to publicly release the RTM version of Windows 8. If this OS turns out to be the future, then I might go for it, but if not, then, maybe I'll just upgrade my 3 year old laptop to Win7. I don't want to spend a good amount of money on something that will not last me for like, at least 3 years minimum.

Yeah it would be nice to have a new one,but if you have the money buy it for yourself, but then if you don't you can always add an upgrade of a few pieces of hardware at your repair guy's place and they can help you there! :) good luck to you! :)

If you are going to defer buying that laptop because technology is rapidly changing in time, then you may not be able to buy a laptop at all. If you are not satisfied with it when a new one comes along in the market, you can always sell it.

Actually depend on your need. If your need is for Gaming then use desktop. If your need for Graphic Editing an Apple iMac will be better. Never use laptop for heavy gaming because it will be break.
Ordinary computing will not need most advance technology. So be wise in spending your money for a laptop.

I do agree with some of above responses.. anyways.. my opinion.. wherever you buy anything in computer or electronics world, after 6 months you always find you could have wait.. everyday new technology arrives, new features and new support.. so I suggest don't think too much about advance technology and features.. first make a list of your requirements.. and also decide your budget.. fit the laptop in it.. as you can get laptop from 10000 INR to 150000 INR for personal use.. it's a wide range.. you can set your configuration as per your requirements like RAM and Processor etc..
you can ask best configuration by describing your usage too.. we will definitely try to help you for best laptop models. :-)
Good Luck for saving..

For me , a laptop is a necessity, because I travel often. I have to carry along a loptop on my business trips, in the country and overseas, to work on business matters and to keep in touch with my office back home. As technologies advance, if necessary, I will get a new one. But, so far, the one I have is good enough. I have had this one for over five years now, and it is working very well.

Sreekutty,it seems that your value is out of the date. Surely, the technology keeps developing and it is implausible to purchase the most advanced laptop. Yet we buy laptops to use them, not to own them merely. As long as your hunsband and you can learn some knowledge with it, you can afford a new laptop when yours should be dumped. Saving never creat wealth, but learning does. The key is whether your husband and you would like to do it.
