I stopped going to the Movie Theater. I am fine with seeing the latest movies after they come out on tape. I really prefer the comfort of my home and getting my own popcorn and starting and stopping the movie at will. I wonder how many have given up movie theaters?
I would think with the number of large screen TVs out now the numbers would grow. I do still enjoy a few movies only in the theater, but the rest I prefer watching at home. The last movie I thought needed to be seen in the theater was Jurassic Park.

I don't go to the theaters anymore either.I used to rent movies a lot but I quit doing that too. I now am a member of Netflix. It's a site online that you pay $7.95 a month and you watch as many movies as you want.
Most of the movies are a year or more old but I don't mind waiting that long to see one instead of going to the theater. I don't like the prices they charge at the theater...regular price is almost $20 a person and then the price of popcorn and a drink is another $20 so it can cost $80 for a couple. I think that's a lot of money for a night out.
Good luck and happy mylotting my friend,
Chris

My daughter just signed up to some other site, don't know the name of it, and cancelled our netflix because this other one is better, can get TV shows too. Netflix has got to change the movies on their site and/or add more because they are running out of new ones for the people that have been a member for a long time.
We were using them for about 18 months and couldn't find anymore movies to watch because we'd seen them all already. They rarely add any new ones, maybe added 10 in the 18 months we were using them.

I've never tried Netflix. Do you download them into your computer, or how do you see them? I'm afraid to download stuff into my computer since it crashed on me in August. It cost me over $100 to get it fixed.

You're right. The only two reasons (good reasons) I can see for going out to the movie-theater are 1) to share a movie with your friends and 2) if some of the scenes need to communicate a 'bigness' that can't be otherwise understood (dinosaurs in Jurassic Park, the battlefield of the universe in STAR WARS, STAR TREK et al.)
Although 1) you only need 'a public space' to meet with friends when you're not sure if you trust them (or when they're not sure if they trust you), and the only time you know them well-enough to know what kind of movies they like and yet not trust them is if you're in some kind of movie-club---which would probably BE the 'public place' anyway.
and Although 2) the night sky anywhere can give your imagination all the 'feeling of bigness' it needs, 'bigness' you can match-up in your mind with a movie you see anywhere!

The point of a movie-club is almost the same as the point of going to church---you're pretty-sure you're gonna meet others there with whom you share 'a similarity' (movie-clubs, fanhood of a certain type of movie; churches, love for an un-sense-able power.)

Yeah stary1, after having internet and large screen tv or pc lcd we could watch our favorite latest movies at home conveniently and comfortably We don't have to waste time on visiting theater as well as to pay for the ticket and bus fare, etc like before. Do not bother to get our clothes changed too
Even though I still would like to visit movie theater once in a while only to make our daily life rather colorful...especially when my kid is back from hometown during his holidays. There are lots of fun eating and drinking our favorite snacks and beverages respectively in the theater. After the movie my son would invite my husband and I to enjoy the food served in our favorite restaurant.
Happy posting and have a nice day!

Hello lkbooi. Glad to see you here on such a shiny morning. You are right to say that sometimes we may go to the movie theater for a change to make our life more colorful. But the ticket price for a movie in our city is so high that I haven't ever thought about going there for even one time ever since the new and big movie theater was built years ago. Maybe I need to change my mind to go and watch a good movie sometime with my wife and child though we prefer watching on the Internet and on TV. Have a wonderful day and enjoy yourself.

We did see sTar WArs when it first came out in the theatre, then "Vantage Point" and "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince," so have not been to the movie theatre that much. It used to be that there were these luxurious wide seats and you had plenty of room, but now the theatres are not that comfortable. Then there is always the person who is taller then you or the person with the big hat or large hairdo that comes in later and spoils the picture by walking in front of you.
So now I watch at home. It s nice comfortable and I can see the whole screen, but I do miss going out and seeing it in a real theatre.

There were different types of wide screens. So when you adapt them to the regular wide screen, it might turn out right. If the screen or the tv is too small, it does not work. And if you adapt the theatre ratio to a tv screen in some case you may lose part of the side or part of the top.
So what happens I will keep the screen as it is even if there is a black letterbox around it. I do not mind the crowds s long as I can see the screen n the movie theatre but not part of the head.

I do not get to get out of the house much and really do not watch many movies too much anyway. I have a couple of movies I am waiting to come out on pay per view. I like being able to go to the bathroom if I need to. And I like my own popcorn too - without all the butter! lol! I think the last movie I saw was Avatar. (in the movie house anyway!)

I saw Avatar in the regular theater. I have not gone to one of the 3D movies yet. I am always just happy to get out so it doesn't need all the extra flair for me! lol! I cook my popcorn dry in the microwave. I do not like to add anything to it at all...it's great just the way it is! lol!!

Oh we should get together. LOL I like making my own popcorn too..I use an air popper and put on a little spray butter..way less calories and way way way less than the popcorn in theaters. Did you ever see stats on the tremendous calorie count of movie theater popcorn?? Yikes it's even higher than the bag kind you buy.
Did you see avatar in 3D? I thought of doing that..

Hello stary
You are very right that although theater is good for movie but movie at home and with more snacks than theater is best.We can pause whenever we like, good scenes we can see more than one time and in my case i forward the boring part too.So for me, movie is best at home and I don't think that without any much force I am going to theater to spend my money.

The movies I like can be seen on my 13 inch t.v.! I have been lucky. I have gotten rto see a few movies in the theater thris year. But there have been a time when it was about a year in between seeing a film in the theater. It isn't the price of popcorn, I don't eat when I go to the movie house. Or the price of the movie ticket, it is the subject matter of the films these days. If you are not into horror , or gross out comedies , or Worse , Romantic Comedies, there isn't and films you Want to see.So to find a film that I want to see is rare. The last film I saw was Columbiana.

Back in the day , when my mom and I would go, we would get popcorn and eat it all Before the movie started. Then we got cable. And back then I had about 3 to 4 films I Wanted to see come out all at once. I would see one or two and wait for the rest to get on cable. And as I grew I went to the movies alone. That;s is when the popcorn prices went up And I could have popcorn at home , thanks to the microwave! So these days if I can Find a film I Want to see , I go to the movies , have no popcorn and Then eat Afterward.

I feel compelled to eat popcorn if I go to a movie theater. The smell as I walk in beckons me to buy it Maybe because it was a habit ..all the years I used to go I always had popcorn and a diet coke, and often a box of candy. It was fun...but I've been there, done that and don't miss it now. It used to be the main place to go on a date as I grew up in a small town.

Oh yes, you are right, with Home theater , a family can enjoy watching movie at the comfort of their home but I think it's still a different experience when you are in the theater. What lacks in home viewing is the crowd that share with you the excitement and the thrill of the movie. It's really different when you watch it at home!

I had not thought of the emotional experiece part..lol and sometime people talking in movie theaters was annoying. but I understand your point of sharing the emotion...I still think I'd rather be at home since to me the advantages outweigh the disadvantages.
I do think some special effects are superior in movie theaters.

True! Especially if you are watching a funny film in theaters. However, I find it really annoying when watching a good movie in the cinema and there were people chatting loudly and laughing when the film isn't actually funny.... like we went to watch the last Harry Potter movie, there was this lady who giggles endlessly and only stopped when my mom and two other person told her that she is causing a bit of annoyance and no one near can't understand what the characters are saying. It was Snape telling Harry about what happened to his mom and dad. And we did not hear all the words which Snape told Harry... =) So we're gonna watch it again at home once we got a copy of it.

Viewing a wide screen in movie theater is totally different and is much more appreciating because you can see the clear details of all angles, but honestly because of the cost now of movie pass is so high, I prefer the same video at home to watch.

The advantage is you can still attend to you kids' need when they interrupt you in your watching. You can on,off or pause your viewing if it needs to.

Yeah you are correct friend. I will also prefer to see movies at home with theater effect in our LCD TV. But some movies which have 3D effect i will prefer to see them at theaters itself as they give more enjoyment. And also i prefer seeing horror movies at home when i was alone..

Most of the time, nowadays, I just wait for it to be available on DVD. With DVD, you can stop the movie anytime and go on bathroom breaks. But I still love going to movie theaters because nothing just beats the thrill when you're there watching in the cinemas, especially when it's the premier of a certain movie. I make it a point to watch on cinemas the movies which I think are really worth paying for.

Yeah if we go on bathroom breaks during a movie, surely we would miss a part of the movie. That is an advantage if you'll just watch it at home. Effects are really better in theater, especially when the movie is on 3d. It feels like you're a part of the movie.

Wow that was quite a long time ago stary!
I still go to movie theaters although I would choose which movies to watch. Movie tickets are getting costly so we can't just watch movies that we just want. It must be the movies that we really love and feel worth our penny =)
The last movie I've seen is Johnny English Reborn - but it's my friend who paid the tickets =) he was bored in roaming in the Mall and so we just watched a movie... =)
Normally I'd download movies as soon as it gets available online =) It's really fun and comfy watching at home.

Maybe the quality of movies will improve since now they have to really drag us to theater to watch them!
stary1 - you should definitely watch Avatar at an IMAX if you can. I didn't think the 3D effect was so cool, but watching it on the big screen is definitely a different experience.

I just recently went to a movie theater but actually I seldom do that now as well. There are numerous sites that offer movie downloads so it's practical to just use them since they are free. I also watch movies through Youtube and mysoju. It's really practical not to go to the movie theater unless the movie is really worth it. :)

I can't remember the last time I went to a theater. I don't go because of the cost, but the matinees aren't too bad in price.. but like you, I don't mind waiting. Also, with video or dvd I can pause the movie!

I wouldn't say that I have stopped going to the movie theater but I haven't been to a movie in months and I suspect the frequency may decrease over time .This is because movies are so expensive .For me the first thing to consider is a trip into the town and then you consider food and if you have a date ,then then its food for her and finally the tickets can run you a serious sum.Worse when you have think how easy it is to buy either a DVD or watch movies online

There are a lot of people like that. Since the tapes came out, and the internet also, movie goers have declined in terms of number. They can get to watch the movies at the comfort of their homes. Then the TV sets at home are getting to be more movie like, so the movie houses suffer as a result.

Hi Stary1,
I'm fine with the movies coming out on DVD first also. It costs and arm and a leg to go to a movie nowadays.. especially if you hit the snack bar and get popcorn and pop to take in with you. Everything is so high, and if you have a family it is even more expensive. I go once in every blue moon to go.. the last time I went was when Avatar came out.
