World’s worst lungs are in India

An international study that investigated the lung functions of healthy, non-smoking adults from 17 countries has found that the efficiency of breathing of South Asians, mainly Indians, is 30 % lower than that of Europeans and North Americans. Thus this cross-continental survey raises deeper air pollution fears than suspected earlier.

Dear friend, That is really something dangerous and if this goes the numbers will increase as day by day the pollutions are coming up. Moreover the major cities of India are highly polluted mainly due to pollution for vehicles. Moreover those trees are coming down and more and more concrete buildings are up. There are lots of changes only leading to polluted poisonous air that we are breathing. Wished this situation may be taken seriously by Government of India...

I have always espoused on the need for reforestation projects at the urban/city levels. Homes must be encouraged to be with some trees and plants around it. Our land spaces must not be filled with concreted or paved roads and buildings. We must allocate some road spaces and subdivision land areas for planting therein some trees and small undergrowth plants. Let the earth breathe, it redounds greatly unto the people's health. Streets used to be lined with big robust trees at the roadsides. Now, they can hardly be seen to be in existence. Government in all countries must be strictly imposing upon everyone, the need to make sure that all vehicles are operating at an environment friendly level.

Though the Government of India now seems to be aware of this problem which is increasing day by day, yet the efforts taken by it are not sufficient, I think. The government should be more serious about the problem. With increasing trend for urbanization, more and more trees are fell down each and every day. All the urban areas have now turned into concrete jungles. So not only the government, both central and state but also common people should come forward to fight this grave situation without any delay. Different voluntary organizations should also extend their helping hands in this battle for safe breathing.

Air pollution is really doing so much damage to everyone. The ordinary citizen though can hardly do anything to combat it. Although some of us might have done and is still doing what we can to help in alleviating this condition, it redounds to so little if government will not do its share to this effect. In my country alone, there are laws which have been promulgated but, is hardly in full effect. Everyone can see here that a lot of vehicles run the streets which are belching black smoke. And yet, even those belching them white should be taking some steps to achieve that no smoke being belched level.

It is true that an ordinary citizen can hardly do anything himself to improve the condition, but if each and everyone of us is aware of this ensuing danger and try whatever little we can do, I think, it would definitely help in improving the condition to whatever negligible level it may be.

I agree with you.Indian cities have a very bad record where air pollution is concerned. There is so much traffic on the road that in winter the sky gets blotted out due to the smog.Respiraory dieases are on the rise in our country due to smoke, dust and other reasons.People in our country are not serious ,alert and educated enough to tackle this problem. One cannot just put the blame on the government, the people have to understand and cooperate.

i agree with your point of view fully....that's very true that today india is growing day by day but there are negligible efforts to control such problem...and if some good point won't be adopted that can be converted into a serious and unsolvable problem.....

Yes, I too agree with you that if immediate steps cannot be taken, the situation may go beyond control.
