Why Do You Live Where You Live?

I live where I live because my hubby just so happens to come from this particular location. Many of you know that I commuted by train for some months before moving here permanently in July 2005. Now, people live in a particular location for many reasons. It could be for the schooling of our kids (nothing like that for us to worry about as we have none) or it could be for work purposes...or love. So, why do YOU live where you live? Is it many miles away from where you were born or - even, a different country? If you have moved are there any regrets or do you make the most of it, like I do? It would be interesting to know.

Because it is the best city in the best country in the world of course! I am pretty sure you know most of my story, but I will share it again anyway. I grew up in a town an hour south of Melbourne but in my early 20's decided to uproot myself and move 1800 kilometres north to the sub tropical climate of the Gold Coast in South East Queensland, Australia. We chose this place mostly because of it's ideal climate. Long summers, mild and short winters, amazing beaches everywhere, a small city that has everything you need close at hand, but is also close to wilderness areas so you can escape the city easily. It has magical rainforested mountains hugging the Western borders of the city with huge waterfalls, rare old trees and breathtaking lookouts. It is also a major tourist destination so there is always something to do hear. Major events are held here each year as well as the abundance of attractions that exist year round. Why on earth would I want to live anywhere else? The only down side for us personally is that all of our family are still in Melbourne so we do not have any ready made baby sitters for our children which has made it difficult at times over the last ten or so years.

No, there are only 3! You would think that there would be more due to the size of Australia, but there isn't unless you count daylight savings time like it is now. This is because most of Australia has very little population. You can see on the map below the three time zones and the times that they are now with some states having daylight savings time and others not. There is also a small region in the south east corner of Western Australia that has it's own time zone but it is not an official time zone. It is only done along the main highway out of convenience due it being way East of Perth and the majority of WA's population. The Central Time Zone too is a weird one as it is only half an hour behind Eastern Standard time due to Adelaide and most of the population in the time zone being located in the eastern part of the zone. It also includes the town of Broken Hill which is in the Eastern Zone but it is closer to Adelaide than Sydney so it gets shuffled to the Central Zone! http://www.worldtimezone.com/time-australia24.php You might find this one useful too. http://australia.gov.au/about-australia/our-country/time

We have a neat app on our new telly that can store up to 6 times from around the world. One of them is the Gold Coast, Queensland, so at least I now know what time it is over there. Time Zones have always fascinated me. When we travelled from Chicago to Las Vegas a few years ago we went through one time zone, I think..or was it two lol. How many are there in Australia? Without Googling I'll guess and say 5.

I don't know, there may be something wrong with me, but I wound up living back where I was born! A lot of circumstances have happened over the years, but somehow I moved my family back to my hometown, and did live in other places for a while, but I always felt the most comfortable in my hometown! I have a lot of friends, relatives, and my parents here! I think God wanted me back here, because now, since I don't have a family anymore, I am the one that takes care of my parents! But my mother did pass away in Oct.'09, and now I just take care of my Dad, and I think I was the one that was destined to take care of him! I have two sisters and a brother that moved away , out of town, but I have two sisters and two brothers that stayed here in our hometown also ! Actually I could just about live anywhere, I have tried the big city life, and it was alright, and I also tried living out where there were hardly any people, and I didn't mind it! Fate just kept bringing me back to where I am now, at Home ! I do regret not staying in San Antonio, Texas, where I loved the food, the music, and the gorgeous girls! I could have made a career playing music, if I had stayed there, but something kept me in my hometown! But yet still, maybe one of these days I still have the urge to go back, and finish the rest of my 'contract' with life there! It just depends on circumstances in the future!

I grew up in the Thames Valley between Reading and Oxford. I moved to London, then Germany, back to London and then down here as part of a company reorganisation in 1992. I have left them since. I already knew this area quite well and love the fact that we live in a small, historic city surrounded by beautiful rolling countryside. We are 40 minutes from the coast and 90 minutes from the centre of London. There are good road and rail links with the rest of country and we even have an airport 40 minutes away. I love history and we have plenty of it here. Castles, battlefields, churches and of course Stonehenge are all on the doorstep. We have a good choice of shops and some wonderful local farm shops. I love to visit other places but there's no place quite like home. Home is here and I don't see us moving any time soon.

70 miles further south. I live in Salisbury. You should come back down and get out of the car this time.

You mean Oxford, right? I once met a guy from Aylesbury (he was a bit weird) and he said, "Let's go to Oxford" and he ended up driving us THROUGH it without us getting out of the car. Glad I don't go out with him anymore lol.

I live where I live because I was born and raised here. I wouldn't know any other place I actually would want to exchange for where I live. However, I have been considering for a while moving out of state. Still in the thinking process and it may just be what I have to do to get back to working offline again. If I had to move I am sure I would have a difficult time adapting because I do not know any other place like I do here. But with time I sure I will either get use to it and or maybe come back. lol

I live where I live because I have always lived here. I was born in a different neighborhood, but we moved here when I was 2 years old. I have ben here ever since. I called it home for many years, I had gotten married here, and my marriage ended here. There is tons of history here. Now I am thinking of leaving as there is nothing left here for me. I now am think of leaving the state of New York. I have some regrets, but the best years are behind me now. I wish I had to do all over again, I would sure change everything.

From your other posts I gather you're rather disillusioned with New York, to put it mildly. Is it the same all over the US? My one regret is that I didn't save enough when I was working. I'd save up for holidays and hi-fi equipment rather than for something really important like a house! I reckon I could've done it too if I'd been strong enough but I just stayed at Mum's, gave her and Dad "board money" and carried on like that until I went living with "Blobby" who I've mentioned a few times. He taught me the real value of money as he left me with bills he could not pay, when we split. However, location isn't all about money as you well know. If the "feel" of a place is different, if the people themselves are different, we can't get it back to how it was before. I do know what you mean when you say "the best years are behind me now." I feel that too. I never thought being 45 would make me feel invisible, especially in finding work but I can honestly say I don't think it's going to get better. Having said that, people that ARE working are more miserable in the same job than they were, say, 10 years ago so do I really want to go back to my old life, seeing as it's different anyway? It's a tough one. I could always write a begging letter to Richard Branson...

I remember your were somewhere between Blackpool and Carlisle then, you worked there.I live where I live, because it is the place where I was born and bred.I once left my hometown for more than 20 years on account of going to school and working.I came back in 1984 and have lived here ever since for the sake of taking care of my parents who were up in years.

I live in the same town where I was born, and I live here for a variety of reasons including health and financial but also because my parents still live in the town. I’ve not always lived here and amongst my varied homes I lived up in Sheffield for a few months which was a very eye opening experience something I wouldn’t chose to do again. To be honest I doubt I will move from the town I live or at least not that far unless I win that mega money and then it is island life for me or maybe Canada.

I moved my family half way around the world in search for better future of my kids. My son had asthma when he was very young. And when I had the opportunity to move, I did! Even if it meant leaving a good career, and familiar surroundings with lots of friends and family. It was a struggle for the first few years (even now sometimes), but I always have my eyes on the goal. Soon, I would realize all these, and I would be able to say that I made a wise decision.

Well, I was born in Australia and have been living in the same place for most of my life, I probably moved to where I live now ever since at the age of 1. So, I've been going to the nearby primary schools and I now go to a high school just 15 minutes from where I live. It's a great place and my parents never want to move but house price are rising and our house rent is taking a big toll on our household income. So eventually, we have to move, probably after my major high school exams are over. I really don't want to leave this place. I've been here for almost 17 years and I have so many high school friends who live where I live. My neighbors are lovely and I know all the short cuts in my suburb. But sometimes, things never last.

I am living here because of my job. It is far far away from my birth place. I am a career-minded person, and so I gave priority to the type of job I preferred. I am quite happy here, very lucky to have this job. I do of course visit my hometown once in a while, enjoy the places of my childhood and high school years.

Yes, I like to go back whenever I can as my parents are there, of course. In fact, we're picking Mum up on Friday night so she can spend the weekend with us, then I'll be going back to hers for the following week. We do this every two months or so.

i live where i live now because of work. originally, i came from outside the big city. now, i live within the big city because of work and professional growth. after my retirement, probably i will move back to the countryside where life is easy and slow. i do not like the buzzing and hustling of the big city. anyway, the opportunities are here so while im young, i'll take those.

It's good that you have found work and I hope you manage to move back into the countryside once you have retired. I do know what you mean about big cities being too "much" and the pace of life is definitely slower and less stressful out in the country.

I have lived where I live for 25 years. I came to live in the city I do because I was in love. I moved in with my first love. We had plans to get engaged and get married. Never happened! Six Months later I was told to move out! We were over! I had plans to move back to my home town in 5 years which is 2 hours from where I do live. It never happened and I am happy it never happened that way! I have never regretted moving to were I live!

Generally speaking,i just arrived in this city two months ago.And i think the reason why i come here is that i want my dream come true, and this is the place where it would be happen. But also, the pressure is big, which makes me feel exhausted, but i would still hold on for several years and give me some time to realize that.Good luck to all of us and thanks for sharing this.
