Well I recently got into a little discussion with some friends about suspense movies. It started off with, "I haven't seen a good suspense movie in a while" from one of my friends. T this I replied really? What is the most recent one you have seen. Then that told me well I saw Hostel II and that was probably the most recent. Then I said wait a minute that isn't suspense. That is how this discussion began.
So now I bring it here. What is suspense? When you ask me about a suspense movie I think Bourne or Taken or something with a twisting plot like Se7en. None of those are horror movies whatsoever. So does suspense mean horror in your mind when it comes to movies? let me know and kets figure this out finally LOL.

I think it depends on what the movie is based on. Is it a story of horrific encounters or is it a mystery with crafty turns and scarey parts. The main basis of the plot is what counts. Surprises around every bend. That's suspense. Blood and goar and ugly monsters, that's horror.

See I can see that theory very well. and agree with you that the difference is very blatant how you say it.

Suspense is a feeling of uncertainty and anxiety about the outcome of certain actions, most often referring to an audience's perceptions in a dramatic work. Suspense is not exclusive to fiction, though. Suspense may operate in any situation where there is a lead-up to a big event or dramatic moment, with tension being a primary emotion felt as part of the situation. In the kind of suspense described by film director Alfred Hitchcock, an audience experiences suspense when they expect something bad to happen and have (or believe they have) a superior perspective on events in the drama's hierarchy of knowledge, yet they are powerless to intervene to prevent it from happening. In broader definitions of suspense, this emotion arises when someone is aware of his lack of knowledge about the development of a meaningful event; thus, suspense is a combination of anticipation and uncertainty dealing with the obscurity of the future. In terms of narrative expectations, it may be contrasted with mystery or curiosity and surprise. Suspense could however be some small event in a person's life, such as a child anticipating an answer to a request they've made, e.g., "May I get the kitty?". Therefore, suspense comes in many different sizes, big and small.

i looked it up.. and judging by this, i think a suspense film would fall into the category of a thriller or a horror. thriller and horror are genre's.. but i don't think a suspense film is entirely a genre.. more of an indication of the genre of the film if you get what i mean?

but that depends on how much you are into your horrors! it didnt scare me either but the scene with the vomitting little girl and the creepy guy in the bathroom, really terrified my partner who hates scary films and never watches them..

Very well stated. I still say me personally perception wise at least If I am in suspense, I'm not scared Im just curious. Horror and a thriller to me should mean I'm scared. Sixth Sense was used as an example poster and I agree I could say it was suspenseful; but it was not scary at all.

Another good point. I have yet to ever be scared by a single movie. However I will say the video game Condemned made my literally jump out of my chair the first time I was playing it. People do have different levels of fear and I guess that would play into suspense.

I can't say as far as Deception since I haven't seen it.
To me though suspense is just curiousity. I'm never scared especially the Others and Sixth Sense, I wasn't scared at all in either of those but the were suspenseful
