Friends of mine have 2 Border Collies. Smokey is well trained and doesn't eat tennis balls! His friend Cosmo, who his owners got like a few months ago ate the tennis ball! Two weeks ago Cosmo chewed up a tennis ball and ate it! His owners didn't know he did it at first! They had to run Cosmo to the vet because he got sick! They had to do surgery to remove the tennis ball from his stomach! Now Cosmo can't be trusted with any type of ball! Cosmo will try to eat it! So now Cosmos has to wear a muzzle unless he is supvisored by his owners! Now Cosmos owners are finding out he was not trained like he should of as a pup! He is 3 now. I hear their are some other issues, too! Never heard a dog heard doing this! I hope Cosmo is not given back to his orginal owner! We will see!

My bull mastiff X can destroy a tennis ball in about three minutes if left alone to do it. Whether any of it gets swallowed I'm not sure, but probably, although it hasn't yet made him sick. Makes ball playing a bit expensive, but our little dog saves a bit of cost by chasing her ball and then gripping it like a vice until we get back to the car. She can't quite get the idea of returning it lol.

My brother's Golden Retriever likes to go after the ball but he won't return it! You have to catch him and tell to drop the ball! He iss a Retriver and doesn't fetch! Go figure! His buddy and my brother's dog is a Greman Shepard who loves to play catch! He always brings the ball back! He also loves to chew on squeeky dog balls until the ball doesn't squeek anymore! Dogs do crazy things!

You are right, Cosmo wasn't properly trained as a puppy. But it is never to late. Dogs can learn at any age. Of course, it will be more difficult than it would have been if this training had occurred 3 years ago but it is still possible to make him stop.
I hope your friends will try to help him get rid of this obsession and they won't be forced to give him back to his previous owners.
You didn't tell us: how did your friends got Cosmo?

My friends were looking for another dog to keep their dog Smokey company. Jeff and Mary were thinking next year would be a good time to find another dog. The thing with Cosmo gave up not long ago. My friends decided the time was right!
I hope they can retrain him and I know Jeff and Mary will! They did a great job with Smokey! They can with Cosmo!

I never had heard this before until my friend mentioned at work one day. I have seen dogs tear up balls. My brother's German Shepard likes to chew on squeeky dog toys until they don't squeek anymore!

I have two labs and they are the same way. They are very well behaved dogs for the most part but they go through toys like crazy. We used to buy them plush toys for christmas but they will take them and go lay and chew them till they have them torn apart and they eat the stuffing from the inside. With tennis balls they chew and pull the fuzz off the outside first then they bite it apart and eat it. They also will eat the kids socks if they leave them lay around.

I know dogs love to chew on stuff, especially when they are puppies. My brothers german Shepard loves to chew on squeeky dog balls and will until the ball won't squeek any more! I know dogs love to chew and tear apart toys ,like stuffed toys. Never tennis balls until my friend told me what Cosmo did! It amazes me dogs can eat stuff like stuffing from balls, etc and don't get sick! Crazy!
