Merits and demerits of long and short discussions.

When I start a short topic usually in the form of a query consisting of a very few lines only, I always get a lot of responses. But when I start a long descriptive topic, I usually get a few responses. I think the underlying reason may be that nobody has the time to spare for reading such a long descriptive topic as mylot pays for writing and not for reading.

That can be true, although I must admit I do take a lot of time to read, as part of participation, we must read. We are suppose to read all responses before we respond and that way no one is duplicating as that is not allowed.
It is to anyone's benefit to read so they do not respond illogically. There are time when I have seen discussions a bit on the lengthy side which has way too much detail where one gets lost as to what the topic really is about.
Although I do not start many discussions, but when I do I take the time to review it several times to see if there is anything I can omit so that it is not too lengthy, as I do know that some members tend to refrain from responding.

I've seen such discussions that are long but are quite unclear and I do admit at times they can be annoying.

So I guess this only goes to show that to elicit responses from mylotters, one has to think of a topic that is interesting, and write it in a manner that can entice people to read it, because not all are patient readers.

Oh yes if they are not broken into paragraph form I can tend to get lost and or difficult to understand but I do at times take the time out to read them carefully as I would not want to respond simply by just the title. But again if it a run on full paragraph it can be difficult to capture interest.

There are various reasons why mylotters prefer to answer the shorter discussions. But, it is easy to see that indeed, they prefer to deal with the shorter discussions and that's that.
I have also noticed that these days, people post very short responses as against to how it was years ago. Mylotters used to be doing commonly three paragraph responses.
We might just as well consder everything to be just find. What is important is that there are a lot of us who are participating in the discussions.

It may be so because sometimes the topic is represented in very poor and grammatically mistaken English so that it becomes very difficult to understand. Moreover, command of many of the mylotters over English is so poor that they often have difficulty to understand. But in spite of all these short comings molot is full of energy.

It will come out that mylotters nowadays prefer to respond to shorter discussions. This is because, they want to save on the time being spent on reading the discussion.
Everyone prefers to be able to have sufficient time to do responses. It is through the number of responses that they manage to get through that they gain some earnings.

how come savy pat that people here do read my medi um long discussions and do respond to them or are these people that
'use their brains a lot and do not need one line or two line fluff
discussions such as what is your favorite flavor of ice crean?
surely a lot of people here are brighter than that? just my rant for the day I g uess.

It also depends on the topic too. But yes, a lot of people here just want to give his/her opinion so it is better to give a question that could sum up your story if your story is long. I find it effective.

Yes, my friend i noticed that too. And as per my experience, i don't want to read a very long discussion. Theu true gist of the topic becomes vague.
I guess, other feels that way too, so that's why lengthy topics don't get much responses.

I'm put off if I see a long, long, discussion! I like to get to the point quickly myself so respond to others who do likewise!

I am sorry ravisivian but i don't agree that lengthy discussions are encouraged more and given recognition. It has to be a substantive discussion. It may be short but it has substance.
To be honest, i noticed getting more for my discussions and responses. Maybe because i am always direct to the point or have a brief but concise discussion. No beating around the bush, as they say.

If that is your observation then I suppose there is some truth to it, but it is not true for all members here. I think perhaps those who are quite new and are intent on earning money are the ones who wouldn't want to take time reading long discussions as they would like to just keep increasing the number of responses they make. But there are also many who have learned to enjoy MyLot as a discussion site where one can learn and enjoy exchanging meaning comments from fellow members. I must say my attitude when I first got here was that I generally skipped long discussions, but now I do read them and take time to respond so I find that my time spent on MyLot is more porductive, not to mention that my earnings are better than before.

hi doctordidi and I think a l ot of mylotters are just plain lazy as I m ake fairly loong discussions and I do get a lot of
responses too. make it q uality and the length will not
matter if its intelligently written and easy to understand.

Yes, i totally agree.A short but descriptive discussion will always attract many responses since everyone wants to respond to many discussions.I have also skipped long descriptive discussions in the past and responded to short but to the point interesting topics.A long winded discussion is never read through and through by most people,so if you want to get more responses write a short and sweet one.

I agree with you. I usually either leave the long ones to read later or overlook them completely. I am behind as it is now and trying to make it all up. Not easy if you have alot of long posts to read. Ugh!. Yes, Mylot pays for the writing and not the reading. I hope I get all these done soon.

I think this depends on what are your goals are for this site. If you're just here to make money, then I guess it would be better to respond to short discussions, and give some bland answers.
But I have found that the long ones are usually the more interesting ones. Yes they require much thought, but definitely not boring!

I have also noticed that. I think there are many factors involved. One is what you said, some people might not have the time to spend on the long ones. Then there are those people that just do not want to bother reading those long discussions. And then the ones that might not know how to answer it. Although, I have not seen many long discussions, I have come across a few. I do not have a problem responding to them as long as it is something that interests me.

It is this way. when it is short we can understand easily even if required after reading two times. I like short discussions. But many mylotters enjoy writing more on the topic. Further the interest the discussion creates in us is relevant to ensure more responses.

Hello Doctordidi,
The reason being most of the people don't like to read longer discussions. They find it time consuming to read that.
But i don't understand why is it so?I always love to read longer discussions as i can have the understanding of the topic much better if the OP has elaborated well.I always try myself to be more descriptiove on discussions as MYLOT admin itself says to be more descriptive.
