Across the water, in the air or overland

When I was a child my family used to go across the English Channel on a ferry. I liked going on the Hover Speed when I was in my twenties and early thirties. I was 14 years old on my first flight which had been from London to Athens. That journey had only taken 3 and a half hours. Most of all I love traveling overland by train. If there isn't a train available then I choose to go by bus.
Do you have memories of travel by ferry, train and plane?
Which kind of transport do you like the most?
Why is this?

I don't like flying, and this means that I am unable to get on an aeroplane and have not managed to make use of this mode of transport very much during the course of my life. Whenever I want to go anywhere, I have to either go on a boat or on a train, and this means that my journey time is often a lot longer than it really should be. However, I don't want to miss out on travelling in my life, so it is just something that I have to do in my life in order to get the things done that I might want to. There's no point in missing out.

Hi GemmaR. I can totally understand that you are not able to fly anywhere due to your fear. It is wonderful when you can take an express train or spend a night on a train in a comfortable compartment. I live in Europe and so I have many countries not too far away that can be reached by train. Good luck.

in my travel, firt problem is that which transportation is convenient.we usually by bus, whic is cheap and comfortable and takes you to your destination in the short travel. In the long time travel ,we choose to by train, the system of railway is very convenient, the price is very reasonable, people depend on yourself situation to choose the suitable price. By air is not suitable for us . the price is very high, tha airport is faraway from the city,so I am not usually by air.

I remember the Hovercraft, but did not take this crossing very often. I usually went Hook of Holland - Harwich and took that innumerable times. These days the Stena Line catamaran is so much faster than the old ferries of Stoomvaart Maatschappij Zeeland. Stena lines took SMZ over in 1990, if I remember correctly. From then on, there was no longer the nigh boat. I loved the night crossing, bunk beds in tiny cabins gave the feeling of real travel.
My first flight was from Amsterdam to Gatwick when I was 19. I prefer travelling by train and do this whenever I can. Much more relaxing than plane or boat. I don't like travelling by car. A car is like one's own home. I always have the feeling that I haven't been in the country. This doesn't happen very often because I haven't got a car and never had.

When I visited the Netherlands the second time I took Euro Star to Brussels then caught a train. My first trip to the Netherlands was on a ferry that had a swimming pool and I slept in a cabin. My bunk rocked so it was a very memorable experience.
It is lovely that you are fonder of traveling by train that by plane. Yes, my car is like my home too. I use it for short distances and the furthest I tend to go in it is an hour or two away. When I was 19 years on I had my first long haul flight on a Caribbean airline.
Thanks for your wonderful response.

I like to fly, because most of the time being at the local rather than traveling to it is the goal.
I do like to drive when I can, so I can stop at places if I feel like it - we drove to Kansas in May and the evening we spent in Oklahoma we hit a Goodwill and found some cool things!

I've only started traveling in the last four years and its only been domestic, mostly by car. We did fly to Hawaii about a year ago and stayed for 11 months. I like traveling by car, we have kids and our Nissan Quest is loaded with a DVD player and it gives the kids a chance to lean their sets back and enjoy a movie, or three, or four, while we drive across the USA.

hi Maxine,
When we went to Europe with my husband in 1976, we crossed the Channel aboard the ferry. We could not get a room as it seemed everyone was ending their vacations and besides we were young and didnĀ“t bother. So, as I was tired, I just went to sleep on the deck, using my bag (with the passports and the money) as a pillow. On France we took a train to Paris and arrived at about 5 AM, the right time to see if I knew enough french as to ask for breakfast. It was memorable!

Although we live in the mainland, there is actually an island in front of us which is considered a tourist attraction. Aside from the capital being there, there's some beautiful gardens there too (I believe you've been to Butchart).
Once in a while, when we have visitors coming over, we would bring there. We would take the ferry and stay there for a day or two.I love taking the ferry as it is very relaxing.
