My Daughter got dry eye

Just brought my daughter to the doctor today. For more than a week, her left eye appeared mildly red every day. We had often caught her rubbing her eyes and we had thought that the redness was due to the rubbing. Each time we catch her doing it we will advise her not do it. But we realised later that despite the fact that she has stopped rubbing her eyes, the left eye still appeared red. She did not complain of any vision problem or pain. The doctor today, after examining her, commented that it's strange for a eight year old to have dry eyes and that he has never seen it in a young child as old as my daughter before. This has got me worried. He gave some eyedrops and asked my to bring her 10 days later to check on the eyes again. He said that if it's still the same, then he might have to refer her to a eye specialist. Anyone out there had similar problem with their kids. If so, what was the remedy or advice given. Thank-you so much

I don't have any experience with children and dry eye, but I have had it myself. About 5 years ago I got it, and I saw an optometrist first, and then an ophthalmologist. I was advised to use quality eyedrops anytime my eyes felt dry, which was quite a bit back then (1-2 times per hour). The condition resolved on it's own; I still get a dry eye from time to time, but usually one or two applications of eyedrops a day fixes it. I don't wear contacts which has been associated with dry eye. Certain medications have been known to cause dry eye, as well as environmental conditions. Hopefully your daughters condition will resolve as well.

You're quite welcome. I hope that as in my case the situation was temporary, and resolves on it's own.

Hi! I also have eye problems and my eye easily gets irritated . My right is also dry.The doctor told me that if the weather if very hot there is a great possibility that it will redden so he gave me an eye drop and advise me to really wear sunglasses when going out and avoiding exposure to sun.Just keep on advising and observing your child to avoid further problems.

Do you have Airconditioner in your house? Check whether your daughter is having it all the time or only when she is home. If it is happening only when she is at home, it may be due to Airconditioner. Just changing the air swing direction may solve it. If your daughter is watching TV too close or PC monitor too close, it may happen. Try to avoid it.

Hi, You are absolutely right about the Airconditioner! She sleeps in an airconditioned room all the time and it's always cold with air swing direction very often pointing towards her. I had suspected initially that the cause of her dry eye could be the Airconditoner. But since you had mentioned about it, i'm all the more convinced that it's because of the airconditioner. I have altered the temperature and have also changed the air swing direction. Her eye is much better now after some eye drops as well. Thanks alot for your suggestions

My mother had dry eyes before and the medication they gave to her was " artificial tears", it's like eye drops but the composition is similar to human tears. I think it is still best to refer her to an eye specialist especially if it's a pediatric case.

I don't have kids with dry eyes but I remember my father diagnosed with that problem. The doctor advised him to put some artificial tears, it is an eye drop to keep the moist in the eyes.
