A women in her late eighties was addressing her college graduation class and made this statement worthy of our thoughts. "Growing older is mandatory, growing up is not." Enjoy and think about this.

Now I have to say that that is one very smart old lady. For someone in their 80's to say that says volumes. I agree with it 100 percent.

Hi savypat, That is a great quote and also it's very true. It doesn't mean that we have to be immature, but that we can still see things through the eyes of a child. The world is a beautiful place and there is always an opportunity to explore new things, no matter what age we are.Anyone who can see that all through life has caught it's true meaning.Blessings.

Growing up is also important. One can not be a kid for his/her entire life. Take my example, my relatives, even my younger cousin brother says that I am still a kid. Even girls in my addresses me as a kid. They always say that I have to grow up. Being a kid has its benifit but don't we need a matureness when we grow old?

I'm sure many people wouldn't wanna grow up for varying reasons. Although, I don't think it would look appropriate if, say a 60 year old guy still acts like a teen in front of everybody. That's just ridiculous. It's right if we act mature in the right instances and have fun when situation calls it. To put it simply, everything should be in moderation. Surely, it's not implied on the quote you presented.

I loved the sentence, savypat! It´s SO wise. I feel I´m still growing up (thanks be given) in spite of my age and now my chemo. Age brings wrinkles, knees that hurt, white hair. All belongs to the outside, it seems. But how happy you are, no matter what age, when you discover you are learning a bit from life! For me, that is growing up. It´s a long way, steps are small, but they are worth it.

I saw this quote not too long ago and I really thought that truer words had not been spoken. You see, I was lucky enought to be able to have spent the first twenty six years of my life with my grandmother and she never was an old person in spirit in my opinion. She could carry on and use a sick sense of humor with the best of us (to the point that she embarrassed me the only time that one of my friends met her). She also played with my siblings and myself when we were younger and then my daughter for the first four years of her life. She grew older physically, but she most definitely did not grow older spiritually.

What a lovely quote, and so true! We are all kids at heart. We just have to wait until there is no one watching, and then...

I heard one similar story about a woman who graduated when she was 82 years old, when she said that everybody was surprise and she said that mother always told her that she have to go to college, but she always had an excuse like "I don't have time, I am working"then "I don't have time I have to take care of my kids" then "I just retired I need to rest" but one day she realized that she was just giving excuses to no go to university and she registered in the school and graduated at the age of 82 when her mother was 102 years and happy that her daugther did it. This story is telling us that we have,to stop giving excuses to God, because when we want we can, it doesn't the difficulties we are facing if want we can. Blesses.
