Peng Yu effect is all about being Heartless

I only knew about a Peng Yu effect because of the incident that happened in China recently. I know you have seen the news about this little girl in China that was ran over by two vehicles. She was suffering but 18 people just stared and passed by without helping her. I really felt so sad about it. Then I read about this Peng Yu effect, it's the reason why the people who doesn't seem to care with her didn't helped her at all. It was 2006 when an old lady fell to the ground, one guy helped her stand up. But she accused him of knocking her down and was paid about $7000 for that. But is this their only reason: FEAR of being accused? I don't intend to judge people, but I hope they would do something about it. They could at least call for help.

I do not understand Peng Yu. But, really very tragic. How did it happen? Why a little girl, left to play on the highway? Is the girl, not accompanied by their parents? I am also very disappointed, with people who do not want to help. In today's world, concern for others is lacking.

It was called Peng Yu because of the incident that I mentioned about the guy and the old lady, the guy's name is actually Peng Yu. Her mom is said to be in the washroom at that time and lost sight of her. Yes it was really disappointing that these people can actually stand looking at someone suffering.

It is a bad example for people to avoid helping this little girl, after all, that OLD LADY fell to the ground is no where look and think similar to that little GIRL, why afraid to lend a helping hand to her after she was ran over by two vehicles. Can't they tell it is a car accident and it involved a little GIRL , not an OLD LADY. Those 18 people must either blind or are big moron to judge for themselves the scenario.

Yes, normally we would get some help. We don't need to touch or move her. But calling 911 or dialing emergency hotline would be considered a help if you really don't want to be blamed. It's sickening to know that they think about legal liabilities rather than helping someone dying in an open place.

Look like many urban Chinese had turn into zombie by the rapid development project in their country, they are desensitised by events happening around them and lost most of their sense of humanity and human decency. Their sense of civility and caring nature are long gone while living in urban setting for many years, only monetary reward come with good deed can drive them into action for lending a helping hand. It is such a shame for many Chinese that had to live among them.

It's very tragic. Many people who do not want to help, because fear of being accused. Supposedly, they were concerned with the human side, and thought to be helpful, rather than thinking about what will happen after the help.

You are correct, I'm sure we all will try to get some help and don't act blind. We may not even pull her on the side, but at least we are there trying to call for help. But those people we saw on the video wasn't at all concerned about it.

Indeed Professor... we cannot blame all heartlessness on China alone. Every part of the world have heartless and irresponsible people. It just so happen that it became viral and the whole world got to know about it.

Do you think it's a joke when people talk about the women who saved the little girl that she wants to be famous?

You mean the garbage collector who tried to save her by putting her away on the street? I don't think she wants to be famous, maybe she just wanted to look for more help too and the child's suffering has at least been lessened when she puts on her on the side. She won't be ran over by other cars that will pass by. But I still think it is best to call for help because I think you shouldn't just carry someone that has been badly hurt. Someone like emergency team knows how to handle this kind of stuff.

I can't imagine that those people didn't try to help, what if that situation happened to their love ones? I know they will also feel bad if no one try to help them. Pity child. You are right those people are hearthless they just watch the poor child suffering from the accident.

Yes and have you seen the first guy who walked passed her, he didn't even looked at her but he knows someone is lying there because he moved a few inch away from where the child is... they are unbelievable. Even if he didn't see I'm sure the girl is crying in pain, from the video it seems she is still moving. So i really doubt if she didn't even cry.
