Is it true that private hospitals always squeeze money from patient parties?

It is a common complaint against most of the private hospitals except a few that they always have the tendency to squeeze money from patient parties rather than rendering quality treatment to patients. Cost of treatment in those hospitals is excessive compared to the standard of treatment rendered. It is often alleged that in most instances a patient admitted as a cold case get so serious that he needs to be transferred to the ‘Critical Care Unit’ for saving his life and automatically it raises the bills many folds much more than estimated before admission which sometimes makes the party penniless when the patient is ultimately discharged or even expired. I think that the government should keep a strong vigil on the activities of such private hospitals. What’s your view about it?

I think it's right.Based on my observations, private hospitals are giving unnecessary treatments to the patients like intravenous infusions even if not necessary, prescribing unnecessary vitamins and supplements ,etc. It's sad that private hospitals are stripping patients' pockets but patients are still preferring to be treated by them because of lack of equipment and facilities in the public sector.

And they can do so as the government has no supervision over the activities of these private hospitals. There must be some rules and regulations which should be widely publicized among people so that they themselves can challenge the management of such private hospitals.

We are now talking about the professional ethics of medical professionals. People who belong to the medical field are supposedly, committed to the health care and well being of the people in general.
They are supposed to do everything under their best judgment, in order that a person can be relieved, treated and cured of his health problem at hand. And thus, it is expected that hospitals treat the patients of their true illnesses in the best way that can be done.
No one will question them of their room rates and the doctor's charges but, please render the right services to the people with health concerns.

When a patient visits a private hospital in stead of a government hospital, he knows it very well that he would have to pay in accordance with the room charge and the doctor's fees. But in return he expects a quality service in terms of at least medical treatment from the hospital which would satisfy him. Unfortunately in most cases it is alleged that treatment rendered is very poor in comparison to charges claimed by these private hospitals.

This years I've been in the emergency room of a local public hospital and also in the emergency room of a local private hospital. It is amazing to see the difference between the amount of money that I've been charged for these two cases. The one at the private hospital was over one thousand dollars while the charges from the public hospital was under two hundred dollars. The difference in care wasn't even something that you could really see. I'll definitely be going back to the public hospital.

This issue must be brought to the attention of the authorities. Only government can resolve issues which are of this magnitude.
It is only natural for private hospitals to charge a patient those that come along with the patient's having been admitted therein. However, the patient truly deserves the proper medical care to be given to him/her from out of having been billed so.
I already feel so bad reading through this discussion. I thought that the medical team in the hospital will do everything they can so the patient gets cured of the illness fast and quick but, charges quite high for the services. This is what is commonly happening and it is quite acceptable.

Hi DoctorDidi, I cannot say with certainty that this is true but I expect it is. I have always been opposed to private hospitals and private clinics, as profit has to be their bottom line. Human nature being what it is, I'm feel that corporate greed is the motivator here as well. Blessings.

I believe this happens all the time. I also think that the government is making way too much money being in bed with the entire medical industry. We will never have a united health care in this country like they do in europe and in Canada. The greed factor here in the U.S. is way too high. The government will only watch such hospitals if it affects their wallets, not anyone else's.

It depends on what government you are talking about ? Different nation has different policy on health care. Yes, in America, it has a nickname--Obamacare. Why a nation like America needs a care ? They already have insurance companies to cover their health insurance. The truth is not everyone can pay the insurance. Health insurance is not affordable for most people and most rare diseases are not included in the insurance. That's why we need a national care. The nation who has nation health care, such as Taiwan, does not have the problem as you mention. Every patient can stay in health care covered patient room until recovery from disease The hospital can still get the money from their health care record. The government would pay this extra money to the hospital which is all covered by health care. So, if you stay in the nation who does not provide national health insurance, then you should be careful because it would happen the thing as you said that no hospital would accept patient without insurance.

Yes Ofcourse, I got this experience in the previous month when my elder brother feel pain in his knees and I take him to a private Doctor. The first thing he done is wrote all kind of Medical Tests and send me to the lab attached with his private hospital. They literally empty my pocket and when after getting all results I went back to Doctor he just gave 2 kind of syrup and 1 tablet and gave his very valuable suggestion to do exercise in the morning which he is already doing on regular basis. Than he ask me to pay his fees to his assistant and when I ask how much to him he told only Rs.2200. I ask my brother to take a walk towards home I will join him in a 5 minutes and went to the ATM machine to get more money :(.
So they are not Doctor's but dacoits in white suit's who are looting people very scientifically in the name of Tests and they all have their own Labs to refer patients.

You are right there Doctordidi! There is also a saying that if you are poor then you're sorry but if you are wealthy then you can live. I observe it also that if they know that the family of the patient can really pay the bills then expect that it will blow up the bill! Maybe all private hospital are made only for wealthy family and not designed for poor people, it is mainly a pure business for them rather than a service

It is true. Recently private hospitals started charging registration fees, which is huge amount and it is unbearable by middle class people. I think government should take necessary actions against this and impose proper norms
