Last night, I found myself watching another law-themed TV show. It wasn't so serious, and a bit of a light comedy, so I liked it - Franklin and Bash.
It just made me wonder why are people so fascinated with lawyer-TV-shows?
I know what my reasons are! It's because I could never picture myself as a lawyer. Standing in front of a lot of people arguing my case, and trying to be level headed all the time. And they never show the lawyers buried in books studying. Plus there's always seem to be lots of money flowing through -lawyer rates, insurance money, inheritance, etc. And most specially, there seem to be lots of beautiful women everywhere (specially fo this show).
What about you? Do you like watching these shows? What draws you to watch?

Law shows are like procedural cop shows. I mean how many times do they repeat the same crime and finding out how they will save the day in the last minutes of the show with a special piece of evidence, hidden in plain site that allows their client to walk. The worst part is I really like watching them. I love how they nearly always save the day, these shows are an utopia within the law. The guilty are always caught and the innocent set free. The trial monologue is what makes the show real within minutes a court case that could take days, months even years is solved and taken care of. Franklin and Bash is the same type of show as Boston legal, it is a buddy show that just happens to take place in a court and that does have serious issues dealt in between the comedy scenes.

I do like light dramas, it is like Castle, it is a cop show that is mostly fun and light. The fact that Breckin Meyer and Mark-Paul Gosselaar seem to be having fun helps. Just a side note, I liked Mark-Paul Gosselaar in Raising the Bar I thought it could have grown into an interesting show, pity it didn't even survive the full second season.

Utopia is indeed the word for these shows. I'm sure that in real life, the guilty isn't always convicted, and the innocent don't get to walk all the time. But I guess that in the spirit of making the show comedic, this state of being in utopia has to be a given.
Thanks for the response.

No! The last lawyer themed show I have seen was L.A. Law! And it was more about seeing Harry Hamlin that Any storyline. When he left, so did I. It must be me. I can never get on the side of a lawyers on these shows , especially Law and Order. I always think they are framing Everyone. And Once I Knew I would feel better if the perp got off , I stopped even trying to watch.

hey Now! Well she is a Babe. Wait a minute . When she was on the Partridge family , she looked somewhat like Pippa! Ok enough of the teasing,I feel like you baby sister, lol. Forgive me.
I agree , the more seroius the Lawyer the show , the less I watch it. I feel Why should I watch them frame people, I could see that on the news!
ps. a peace offering.

TV tends to go in cycles. The 60's were big on lawyer shows primarily with Perry Mason and the original show called The Defenders. In those days in the US there were only 3 networks, unless you included PBS. Today, depending upon where you are and how you define them, there are 6 or 7 broadcast networks and a slew of cable networks. That leaves them all scrambling for the next big thing and copying themselves. LA Law and the Practice probably helped spawn a lot of other lawyer shows. Now the next big thing for dramas seems to be shows about vampires, witches, and zombies. For me, I'm mostly watching crime shows but not necessarily legal shows, except for perhaps Harry's Law. I think I'm also waiting a bit futilely for TV to rediscover the western.

I am not to much into lawyer shows, I actually prefer Drama. Right now I am into a few shows such as the Vampire Diaries (which is my personal favority); The American Horror Story; Grey's Anatomy; Private Practice; NCIS. I don't know why I never really like the whole law scenary, it never really caught my attention, they kind of tend to bore me a bit. I prefer medical drama and/or action.

I used to watch House on a regular basis, now I just see it when I get the chance, but one of my favorite medical dramas is Grey's Anatomy and the other is Private. I also like cop and investigative shows, such as Law & Order (Any), NCIS (Any), Unforgettable which is a new show that primered this fall.

I think that a good drama has to have a lot of twists and turns in the plot. If you can figure out the entire plot before the end of the show, that kind of takes the fun out of it. The law is based on facts, but it is subject to interpretation and opinions, which make it a great candidate for drama. In a true case being tried in court you really never know how the jury is going to decide until the end. I'm pretty sure we have all heard verdicts and wondered how in the world they came up with that.
It's interesting to watch the lawyers try to manipulate the evidence to get the jury to decide in their favor.

I'm not really fascinated with lawyer shows. I've watched a few here and there, but I don't specifically look for lawyer shows. I used to like Law & Order, but I don't think it had anything to do with the lawyer portion of it, I just really do like crime shows and watching the bad guy get what's coming to him. I think crime and court cases can be very dramatic, which is why they're so interesting. I'm personally not into the family type drama shows, or even the family type comedy shows.. like Everybody Loves Raymond or whatever other new ones are out there. These get annoying to me. Just the way the characters interact with each other, you know that's not how most families work or how most people interact with each other. There's very little truth in these, and that gets annoying. Plus in those types of shows there's always that one person who is meant to be hated, but they keep coming back to add drama and story lines. Well at least in the crime dramas the people you hate are usually the bad guys who get busted in the end!

I do not know this show but I am a sucker for lawyer shows and also lawyer books and murder mysteries. I suppose this could be escapism but I love them. I adore the thrill, excitement and drama. Definitely escapism from my own life. The women are beautiful and smart and definitely a role model for aspiring lawyers but of course we do not see the drudgery of the reality of being a lawyer.

You know, though I've tried to watch some shows that fall into this genre, but it is actually not something that I've ever been able to enjoy. I think that the reason that I don't like these is because it is not even something that I could ever picture myself doing. I watch shows where I can picture myself as being one of the characters on the show, and this is just not something that I would ever be able to do in my life.

Most people watch TV shows to escape their regular lives. For them it's enough that they see these people having their interesting drama. I think you take it a little further dorann!
I do that sometimes. Specially if there's a lovely leading lady involved.

Guilty as charged! I do enjoy some of them. I like the whole mystery of how it could have happened and how they conclude with all the evidence. It also makes me think of certain instances in life on how they unraveled and or can at some point.
Although I realize it is TV and far at most times from the truth, it does make me wonder how although they do so in an hour, just similar it is to real life law type situations.

It does make me wonder too!
If I had chosen law as a career, would I have had that same exciting life? Or would I just be stuck in a rut trying petty cases.
I guess that's why they have television shows for it, to make it really appealing to would be law-students.
Thanks.

I've never been able to get into lawyer tv shows. To me, law has always seemed boring and I found that I would get bored if I ever tried to watch a lawyer show. Instead, I stick to my doctor shows (Grey's and Private Practice) and my vampire shows lol

Ohhh, I love watching this kind of shows such as The Practice and Boston Legal. If heard of this show, Franklin and Bash but I have not seen an episode. It seems pretty cool! I'm actually loving Harry's Law. It's a dramedy. It's a great show. I just love the fact that they give us realizations about law and how the legal system works. I really like knowing people's point of views. In particular, the writer's point of view in certain issues. The closing arguments always get me! I love dramatic, passionate closing arguments. :)

I never watched franklin and bash, because I didn't thought it was very interesting. But, I do like to watch Law and Order SVU. I'm fascinated with lawyers and criminal series, because they are series that make you think.
