Why can't anything I like actually be good for me?

I love any kind of bread, rolls, hot rolls with butter, toast with breakfast, garlic bread with dinner. But now bread is a no no. Same thing with fried food. We have known that fried foods are not good for us for a long time now. But I miss fried chicken! And fried pork chops and okra and squash. That's what we were raised on. I am trying to eat healthy, its just so hard to find something that tastes good. I even read yesterday that my Twizzlers are no good, too high in sugar or something. I thought that would be better than chocolate...but no. What's a southern girl to do?

Eat dark chocolate. Make your bread from scratch with healthy ingredients and limit the butter, or buy really good breads. Oven fry your chicken in a little oil in a baking dish, but use skinless and canola or olive oil. Use garlic, onions, and spices to get the flavor you like. I think the trouble with twizzlers is for people on blood pressure meds, because of the natural licorice causing it to be more effective. Not sure. Add flax seed meal or salba meal to the things your bread your foods in. Eat small portions. Good luck. Okra and squash are good for you, just do not deep fry, try oven frying them and blot blot blot.

Salba is in health food stores and in Kroger stores in the Nature's Market. I have seen it online as well. Flax seed meal is more readily available. I get it at Sam's Club in supplements. At Wal Mart and Dillons/Kroger you can find it in the baking aisles and in health food stores. All of these grain products add more nutrition and extra fiber. good source of Omega 3s that promote heart health among other things. Use them like you would use wheat germ. If you are coating chickent to oven fry it, add some to the breading, whatever you use, for example. I put it in pancake mixes and in dressing or stuffing. I put it in my home made breads.

thanks! What does the flax seed meal and the salba meal do? Is it like corn meal, or just better for ya than flower? and are they found on the same isle as flower?

There are types of breads which they call healthy. Take note as to which ones are they. There are types of breads which they say people who have reached 45 must take care as regards eating them. The nutritionist told me that I may take only three slices of that per meal. This means that I will totally rule out the foods that I must watch out for. I only need to put in check my consumption of them. Pork must be totally cut off but I can have beef, chicken, mutton...but always in moderation.

Bread takes a lot of flack for being unhealthy yet it has been the staple of human life since it's invention. The problem now is not so much the classical bread made with flour, yeast and water but modern bread which has a lot of added components like sugar. Removing bread is not a necessity in weight loss, instead of white bread eating whole grain or rye will actually help reduce the levels of cholesterol. I think that totally denying yourself these foods is not necessary, the only thing is to eat in moderation. If you want to eat say fried chicken, chops etc have a light meal before like a salad, in that way the total calories for your day are condensed in one meal true, but this allows your body to deal with the meal. Oh and chocolate, dark chocolate, is actually good for you, well it has anti-oxidants which is always good.

I know, I love food that isn't healthy for me, but I try to eat healthy as much as I can. I'm pretty healthy so I think I'll be okay as long as I stay healthy and exercise.

I grew up in the south and I will forever like fried chicken...and I will eat it but not very often. I remember hearing the saying--everything I like is illegal, immoral or fattening...

I absolutely agree with you! I cannot stand that everything I enjoy (which are the same things you do) is terrible for me. I don't like many "healthy" foods. I would much rather the bread, pasta's, garlic bread for sure and things of that sort. I am right there with you.

Eat 100% whole wheat bread; there really are some that are quite good; I prefer them now to any others. Be sure it is 100% whole wheat and not 100% whole grain which is not as good for you. As far as I know Twizzlers are nothing but sugar in some form. I have only tried them once when I got some for free in a contest and I couldn't even stomach getting one down. I thought they were terrible and I love other sweets like milk chocolate, ice cream, cookies, etc. I was raise on fried chicken, too. However, I can't make it like my mother did and the stuff you can buy at fast food places and restaurants is not that good anymore.

yeah it is very hard to digest when we listen something like this.. The fried foods are very delicious but they are not good for health.. We have to be health conscious also.. I too love eating fried foods but we can't eat them. Sometimes i will use good quality of oil to make fried food and enjoy them..

I feel the same. Most of things I like are unhealthy and I have to cut it out or stop eating it completely. Nothing is easy. Staying healthy demand special sacrifices and hard work. Exercises, diet etc. But we have to do it to avoid complicated health problems in the future.

In evolutionary terms, humans have not been eating bread for very long, they reckon around 10,000 years and our bodies are not yet adapted to eating grains and dairy products. I think it's fine to eat fried stuff like meat, eggs and fish as long as you don't eat the grain and dairy products as well. Natural chocolate, which you can buy now as cacao, is ok as well but the processed stuff has got milk and sugar in it.
