Recorders in school

Malaysia

Hi!! I was just curious... when I was in primary school (or some of you may call it elementary school), I was forced to buy and learn to play the recorder. But to this day I don't get why it was part of the school curriculum. Even to this day, I see a lot of colourful recorders on sale in bookstores and other general stores. I'm guessing they're for the current/future elementary school students. But why do we need to learn how to play the recorder? Did you have to learn to play it too?

No, I didn't hv to learn to play e recorder. I did learn it s a kid tho. Actually, s a kid, I liked to play musical instruments but cldn't afford to buy a piano or other more expensive musical instruments. So, I bought a recorder becos it was the cheapest musical instrument.

I had that torture in secondary school! I was always asked to stop playing since mine was a cheap plastic recorder that sounded terrible next the the expensive wooden ones. I got my own back though - I took up playing the bagpipes!

Well I guess in your case not being allowed to play the recorder helped motivate you to learn to play the bagpipes :)
