I think the question is can you afford to pay for an antivirus ? If so then there are 3 top products, Kaspersky,Webroot and Bit Defender, any of these 3 products will protect your computer better than a nuclear bunker.Buy yourself an internet security suite and you will never have any problems
If you can`t afford to pay then go for Comodo,AVG free edition or Avira and you will still be well protected.

I have a Bit Defender 2012 Plus with license on 172 days. I have a question for you: Do you use utorrent ?
If you use, I will send you this antivirus.
It have Auto Pilot which don't ask you if you want to scan or wait you to scan the antivirus the files, you haven't neither trouble. You're relaxed.

Don't waste more time searching for one. Get one now before it's too late.. "Kaspersky lab" it is.

Being married to a geek, he helps me make decisions in regards to anti-virus when using Windows, any edition. Currently I am using an edition of AVG in a Windows 7 environment.
However, up until recently I have been using a Linux based operating system which does not require an anti-virus or Mal-ware program and I never had one problem from either viruses or Mal-ware using that system nor did I expect to have one. A Linux operating system is free unlike Windows, but they do ask for donations if possible.
My geek hubby recently purchased me a new computer with 16 gig of ram because of my need for more ram when playing games and a 64 bit system. Unfortunately, my old computer could no longer be upgraded to meet my demands. The new computer came with Windows 7. He found he could purchase this particular computer cheaper than he could build one identical to it and it met my needs.
I still use Open Office for my word processing and not Microsoft products. For Christmas, my geek bought me Windows 7 Professional so all my former Window's based products will work in Windows 7.
My geek has the expertise and having retired from an electronic engineer position, the knowledge to back up his geek status. The anti-virus currently I'm using is a purchased version of AVG which is designed for multiple computers since there are multiple computers in my household and I'm sure he paid less than retail for it since he usually buys through eBay auctions. Since he builds computers also and sometimes sells them to people who have specific requirements in a computer, the decision was partly based on reviews and discussions about the products in PC Magazine, one of the most recognized computer magazines aimed at computer users and geeks.
There are several very good anti-viruses on the market but from year-to-year the top recommendations seem to change. I've used several, including Panda and the others already mentioned in this discussion. But I do have a second recommendation for surfers, use a Mal-ware program or you will find anti-viruses are not your only problem. I do know when I ask for advice about computer related things, I ask the person giving the advice to qualify themselves as to what gives them the experience to advice me. Just my take on it. Hope you find a good product before long and before a virus invades your machine.

It depends what actually you looking for. If you looking just for anti virus with internet security then i would recommend eset nod32 smart security. I have used it from many years and i never faced any problems. But if you looking for malware, rootkits then i would say go for Bitdefender or Avira. In fact, i am using Avira at present and it's just a best anti virus with malware protection. Frankly speaking, in my opinion all the anti viruses are best but the condition is we have to keep them updated. So choice is all your's.

If you frequently use the internet, I would suggest using the Avast internet security, or use Kaspersky if you have high computer spec

When I had to have the Geek Squad work on my computer the techie that did it recommended Webroot. I like it for the most part and when you pay for it it's good for three computers so if you have other people in your house with computers or a friend you want to split the cost with, that's pretty cool.

They're all pretty much the same, with each one just being slightly better at handling a certain type of attack.
If you're buying, go for a big name - Symantec, Sophos, McAfee, etc.
If you want a freebie, AVG is still extremely popular and very good, as is Avast! (from Avast, obviously). Comodo comes third or fourth, I think, though it's still very good.
Note that they're VIRUS protection, not malware (of which viruses are a subset). The best free anti-malware is the one from MalwareBytes, I think.

My niece gave us norton in a three computer schme last year. Afte that our compute did not have any problems. This year we wanted noton but could not afford it, so I downloaded a three month free trial of norton360 from symantec. the best part is the tool bar called identity safe which saves passwords for me and automatically logs me in withou typing each time. This is not given by others, I presume. If spike or philly knows better, please say. I would like to know.

You can buy an antivirus; best ones are notably Norton (symantec), Kaspersky, McAfee, there are some free Antiviruses but don't tend to have as many features, these include AVG. AVG also have a pay for product so basically an upgrade.
if you want to have an online scan for viruses without installing Trend Micro does something called house call which is pretty good.
Important thing with viruses, try to avoid downloading from untrustworthy sites or P2P networks.
Try to avoid opening emails with attachments (although most email providers scan the emails now) and try to avoid opening untrustworthy .exe files.
Hope this helps
