There are many free to use antivirus programs which are as good or even better than norton, like Avast ,avg etc.I never use antivirus softwares because most of them slows down the system or use resources unnecessarily.I just reinstally my OS when i feel like there is a virus attack. Also chances of virus attack are less if you are careful about the websites you visit.I have never lost any data due to virus attack.

I haven't experienced any malware infection since i started using firefox. When i search for the virus using malware scanner it detects a lot of viruses but i guess those viruses may be harmless.Something like avg haven't detected any virus for a long time in my pc.I havent lost any data due to virus as well,in past 8 years or so.I wonder why would i waste my time for scanning virus since i haven't had a bad experience with virus.

In my opinion, you can just make an image of your harddisk if you really do not want antivirus. You can use Ghost to make entire copy of the partition and restore it, instead of reinstall which is time consuming.
By the way, if you have 1 Gb RAM or more, using antivirus will not slow down your computer. With Norton as exclusion, Norton take too much resource on my workplace computer. At home I prefer AVG (free).

I have had Avira AntiVir Personal for years now. It's free to install and use, although they do have a paid-for version. I use the free one, and I can't say enough good about it. In previous years I had Norton, as well as MaCafee, and I have to say, I think the free version of Avira works much better. When I had Norton and stuff, there were always conflicts every time I turned around. I find that the Avira does a great job of keeping me virus free, and my computer runs a lot faster without the Norton (etc.) I also run Malwarebytes a couple of times a week, just to catch anything else that might be floating around. Malwarebytes is an anti-malware program that is also free. With using the two of these free programs, I have had NO problems in the past 4 years that I've been using them.

I have symantec only.. you may find your system little slower but it's the best antivirus.. just think for a while what's exactly task of antivirus.. to scan all files everytime.. how big task it is.. it's really memory and processor consuming task.. that's why it make system slower..

Hi angel,
You should try f-secure (www.f-secure.com). I am a beta tester of their new antivirus softwares and I find them best in virus detection and protection without sacrificing speed of the operating system. Their motto "Protecting the irreplaceable" is very appropriate.
Avira and AVG also offers good packages, from free to premium annual paid subscriptions. Right now, I am using Avira Free and it worked fine in my laptop (eMachine EMD443), AMD Dual Core E-350, AMD Radeon HD6340 256MB dedicated RAM, 2GBDDR3 Memory. It still runs as specified in spite of the loads of graphic and engineering apps I've crammed into its 500GB HDD.

I am using kaspersky internet security 2011. i suggest you to use this antivirus software. I have only RAM 256, but it works without any problem and my computer not slowing down while using this. an internet security software is the best to use in an internet connected computer.

Actually any anti virus is good even the free one by avg you just have to make sure that you always update it and scan every removable devices that you will insert on your pc. As for me I use Mcafee Enterprises and for other computer just avg free antivirus.
