How do you learn new things?

Do you prefer to get help from a teacher when you want to learn something new or do you prefer to study on your own? Why? If I want to learn a new language I prefer to take a language course at a school. I am also able to study a new language on my own, but if I can afford it I prefer to study at a school. At a school I can listen to my teacher's pronounciation and he or she can correct the mistakes that I make. When I studied anatomy and physiology at nursing school I prefered to study by myself. When I studied on my own I was able to take the time that I needed to understand everything and I had enough time to learn all the details. I learned a lot more when I studied by myself and I liked the fact that I was able to take a break when I wanted to and continue when I wanted to.

I think it is a good idea to learn new things in many different ways. I have also learned new things in different ways. Sometimes I experiment and sometimes I learn from experience or from the mistakes that I make. When I paint some of my mistakes lead to new techniques, and some of the techniques that I have developped started from a mistake that I had to correct

I am not very good at portraits. Most of my paintings are a mix of paper (pictures from old magazines) and paint. I go through the old magazines and pick the pictures that I want to use in my paintings. I use my imagination and combine the pictures in funny or unusual ways. It started as a kind of coincidence. My ex-boyfriend had some old magazines that he wanted to throw away and I decided to have a look at them before I took them to the trash can. In the magazines there were a lot of colourful pictures from places around the world and I decided to keep some of them and combine them and turn them into new pictures - that is how it all started. I think that there is more than one way to become a good artist. Some people take classes and learn different techniques that way and some people experiment on their own and delevop their own techniques. That is how I do it, I simply keep on trying and experimenting. The things that I made in the beginning were awful, but little by little I have developed my own techniques.

I believe that we can learn from both. We can learn from the teacher because they'll be discussing us certain things that sometimes we can't understand when we're reading by ourselves. We can also ask them questions whenever we don't understand a certain topic. On the other hand, we can also learn on our own because there are times when we have to concentrate and read the passage many times just so, we can remember it.

I think that the advantage about a teacher is the fact that he or she can help us understand some of the things that we find difficult or help us with the pronounciation if we are learning a new language. Sometimes it is hard to understand everything if we study on our own, and it is nice to be able to ask a question if we aren't sure that we have understood everything. On the other hand when we study on our own we are able to spend the time the way that we want and we can spend some extra time on the things that we find difficult or things that we find hard to remember.

Yeah exactly. That was what I was saying also. Both can really help us in learning.

Hi Porco,if the new things that i am interested to learn can be learned by myself, then i rather learn all by myself. But, if i were to learn a foreign language like you, i would rather spend time and some money to learn from the language expert. At least, the end result is, i can speak fluently without any problem. As for learning cross stitching, i learned from my mother, since she is very good into it. So, i don't have to learn it from any institute. Porco, i have send another mail to you today, do let me know if you have receive it safely. Miss news from your side...

I just checked my email again and I still didn't receive anything from you. It is strange, I don't know what the problem is I hope that we can find a way to write to eachother, because I want to keep in touch with you I think it is a lot easier to learn a foreign language from a teacher, and I would have chosen to study Russian at a school if it was possible, but there are two problems about it. It is very expensive and the second problem is my home on an island. There are no Russian teachers here, so it only option is language course on the neighbour island. Those are the reasons why I have chosen to study Russian on my own. It is nice to hear that they you learned cross stitching from your mother. My mother used to be good at it, too and she has made beautiful tablecloths are other things when she was younger, but today she usually knits instead.

Yes, in every generation there are new things to learn and the world around us changes in so many ways. The internet has made it easier to learn new things, and there are so many different kinds of information available online. Some of the things that I learned in the past I no longer remember because I haven't used them at all, and some of those skills like how to use a typewriter are no longer useful, because today I always use a computer.

When I want to learn new things I usually take the initiative to know the details. I will learn on my own, but if ever I cannot I understand I will seek an idea the expert. Besides there's no harm in asking someone.

I also ask a teacher or an expert if there is something that I don't understand. I like to look for the answers on my own at first, but sometimes it is too difficult to learn something without the help from an experienced teacher and in those cases and I find someone to ask. Today we can find many kinds of information on the internet and it has become easier to learn new things on our own, but sometimes it is still neccesary to ask others for help.

If I can afford to pay for something new to learn I will probably do it, if not, then i will study it on my own. We can always search the internet for help, ask people who already gained experience, read books, etc. As ive said, if you can afford, go to school. wherein you can ask your teacher and can have one-on-one on the things you want to know.

I have the same opinion when I want to learn something. I like to take a class if I can afford it especially if I want to learn a new language. When I have a teacher I am able to listen to the pronounciation and I know that he or she will correct my mistakes. When I study on my own there is no one to correct my mistakes and I might make the same mistakes over and over because I don't know that it is wrong. If I don't have the money to spend on classes I study on my own. I recently started a disucssion about learning a new language on your own and I received a lot of useful tips there.

There are advantages and disadvantages to both guided learning (with a tutor or teacher) and self-study. The advantages of using a teacher or a tutorial are that learning is more likely to be well structured and efficient and, especially with a human tutor, one's mistakes can quickly be noted and corrected. Having a human teacher or tutor can also give you much-needed encouragement and motivation. Disadvantages are that there is often only limited access to the teacher and that some aspects of the course may cover material which you already know, while other aspects may cause you difficulty and, especially in a classroom situation, you may not have enough time to devote to those aspects. Self-study has the advantage that you can go at your own pace and spend time on aspects of the subject with which you are having difficulty. The disadvantages are that, very often, the learning process lacks proper guidance and mistakes and deficiencies are not always obvious. Motivation is often much harder when one is studying a subject by oneself and often the actual goals are obscured or forgotten. Self-study is appropriate where the specific goals are known and kept in mind and when the learning process mostly involves acquiring knowledge or skills which can be learned from books or online. Assisted study, with a teacher, is appropriate where a skill is difficult to acquire without observing and copying actual practice (such as in a language learning situation) and where individuals are likely to encounter widely different problems which can only be resolved by someone who can understand and analyse the source of the problem and apply the most effective solution for that individual. In all teaching environments, there is also a place for self-study, so the actual skill of learning in BOTH environments is one which everyone needs to acquire!

You make some excellent points. I especially liked the things you wrote about learning in both environments. If we are able to learn new things in both ways we can combine them and choose the appropriate learning style according to the situation and our learning style will be more flexible. I think that one of the big the advantages about guided learning is fact that our teacher can correct us when we are wrong. When we study on our own there is no one to point out the mistakes, and we might make the same mistakes over and over simply because we don't know that it is wrong. I am studing Russian on my own, and I have found many useful resources online, but sometimes I wish that I had a teacher and that I were able to ask him or her: "Is this correct or not?" On the other hand you are right about the advantages about self-study. When we study on our own we are able to spend the time the way that we choose and we can spend it on the things that we need. In a classroom the teacher might spend too much time on the things that we already know, and we don't always have the chance to spend a lot of time on the things that we find especially different, because there are many other students in the class and we don't find the same things difficult.

I preferred to learn by myself. If it is language, I will learn through movies and songs. That's the way I learn English as well. I believe, if we love something, that thing will be easily absorbed by you.

Learning a new language through movies and songs is a great idea. I also use movies when I want to learn a new language and it is a nice way to new words and new expressions. I am trying to learn Russian at the moment I have found some Russian movies on YouTube. They have English subtitles so I am able to listen to the sentences and read the translation at the same time. When I was a high school student my classmates and I learned English expressions from the American movies that we watched, but our English teacher wasn't too happy about it, because we had to use British English at school.

I will start by reading books on the new subject or researching on the internet. If I am still interested, I will look for any online courses that are available.

Online courses is a great way to learn something new. I use the internet in a lot of different ways and it is possible to find so many different kinds of online courses. I think that one of the advantages about online courses is the freedom. As long as we have access to the internet we can study anywhere and anytime, I really like that.

I think that a teacher is a good option when we are a beginner, because he or she has more experience than us and is able to guide us and correct our mistakes. But of course it is not the only way that we can learn something new. Self study is also a possibility in many cases, because we can find a lot of information online and we can find instructions that we can use when we are trying to learn something on our own.

Well, it depends on the subject that I'm trying to study for. I'm still in school, in my senior year of high school and I need a teacher in order to teach me my subjects. I can learn out of a textbook but I do need a teacher there to go through all the calculations and the facts step by step and elaborating it. Sometimes, learning on your own with just a textbook may not be enough. I simply listen to my teacher, take notes, go home and then top up my notes by studying on my own and collecting new notes from other resources. I also have tutors too to give me extra work and improve on my knowledge on a topic such as Maths. But when I need to study for a major exam, I need to study by myself. I don't mind studying with friends but it gets pretty distracting and I can't seem to study.

It sounds like your have found a good combination as you listen to your teachers' explanations first and study on your own when you get back to your home. Yes, studying with friends can be distracting. I used to be a member of a study group. It was nice that we were able to help eachother, but far too often we ended up walking about other things instead of our homework and it was hard to keep my concentration when I studied in the group.

I am a shy person, so I rarely ask my teacher. I will ask my friend first. hehe I didn't take any private lesson, so I studied all by myself. And thanks God, that I can still have a good reputation in my report cards. :DD

It is a good hear that you have success studying on your own. I have been a very shy person myself and when I was in high schools I hardly ever asked a question in class. I did the same thing as you and studied on my own or asked a friend if there was something that I didn't understand. Today I am not as shy as I was in the past, and I like to study languages at a school, because it gives me the chance to listen to the pronounciation and learn things the correct way.

it depends upon the new things that we are going to learn. If we are going to learn a thing, which can be learned by self study, then i would prefer that. There are also certain things that can be learned only through teachers. In that case, i will prefer that. Generally experience matters in all aspects. So, if we wanted train our self, it is better to learn from a good teacher in that field.

I have learned things in different ways. Sometimes I study new things on my own and sometimes I prefer to have a teacher for instanse if I am a total beginner and don't know anything about the subject that I am going to study. I agree with with you when you say that it depends on the things that we are going to lesrn. Sometimes I choose self-study because it is cheaper than taking a class and not because I actually prefer to study on my own, but I think that both methods can be useful. Sometimes we can combine them like listen to our teacher's explanations at first and study on our own when we get back to our home.

Hi Porcospino! its always depends on the subject you want to learn..there are things that is easy if you have an instructor...there are also learning that you can get from experiences and your surroundings, and it also depends on what type of learner you are or the type of studying you are comfortable with..but in whatever learning or studying strategies you're good at the bottom line is don't stop yourself from learning and discovering new things..the more you learn the more you become curious ..learning is a never ending journey!

Hi Porcospino Personally I believe there are two stages for any learning. The first is the stage of a beginner and if you have a teacher at that stage, things get right and chances are that you learn things the right way. For those where we cannot find a teacher, we have to do that on our own and we cannot be sure what we are learning is right or wrong. The next stage is that you already have some basics learned and now you are going for the advance studies. This can be done all by yourself as you have the fundamentals correct. Though you might need some guidance here too but that is mere "guidance" and you can find a lot of information about almost anything on the Internet. Like you, I too started out learning the basics at school and institutes but then after a point one cannot attend schools or such institutes all the time (given the constraints of money, time) so I started learning on the Internet and I am happy that today most of what I use (like PHP, CSS jQuery etc for my website development works) are all learned by myself.

The thing about the two stages is a good point When we are a beginner it is good to have a teacher who can correct us if we make mistakes. If we learn on our own we might make the same mistakes over and over because we don't realize that we are making a mistake. If we have a question and can't find the answer in our books, we are also able to ask the teacher to explain it to us and we don't get stuck when there is something that we don't understand. When we already have some knowledge about a subject it is easier to study on our own, and I think that is one of the reasons why it is easy for me to study English on my own and harder to study Russian on my own. It is a great to hear that you have learned many things by yourself. Today it has become very easy to learn things online, and we can find so many different kinds of information on the internet. I think that is a great thing.

Well, there are really different ways of learning. You can either learn by reading, observation and experiencing. By far, the most easiest thing to do learning is by just reading. All you need is a the material to read on and your imagination to run down and learn. However, it is the most inefficient way to learn. The most effective way to learn is through experiencing. Experience is greater than observation. Observation is greater than reading alone. But of course, learning also depends on the practicality of what you are trying to learn. If trying to experience it is hard enough and will cost you a lot, then you can switch to observation and reading. However, experience is still the best teacher. Having a mentor or teacher gives you someone to observe to and get ideas from. So I think that having a mentor is more efficient than learning on your own. Of course it will depend on how the mentor teaches you and on what the teachers teaches you. Just my two cents in here!

we only can learn if only we are not forced to do so.. if we are willing to learn, then we are able to absorb what ever we learn in no time. i myself, had no experience in playing piano. i cant afford to have classes, so my only tutor is my self and tutorials i've got from the internet. a friend of mine spent a lot of money for his son, just to learn guitar. but nothing yield from it, why? because he forced his son to do so. i may be a bit off topic, but i hoped it helped..
