Does it bother you when your dog watches you while you eat?

Sam, our dog was watching me while I was having my snacks and he was waiting patiently for me to give him some. Most of the time, he always watch me whenever I'm eating. He waits patiently for his food. I feed him after I eat and sometimes, I give him some food that I'm eating.
Sometimes, it's amusing when he's just at my feet waiting patiently. But sometimes, it also annoys me especially when he can't wait and he would sniff me and sometimes grab my leg.
Does your dog do this?

Dogs are pack animals that's why they exhibit pack behaviour. Your dog considers you the "Alpha" male or female so they always expect you to share. When you are eating something, your dog does not know that you just bought that from the store , he's ancient instincts tell him that it's part of the kill in a hunt done by the Alpha so being a member of the pack, he expects he's share, that's the reason for the look in he's eyes or he's actions

Serious, understanding pack behavior is a must if you want to understand your dog more scientifically, it's similar to birds pecking order when I observe my pet turkeys. A dog must always understand where he stands in the pack hierarchy, always lower than the master (alpha male or female)and the rest of the pack especially when you have small children, same principle is also used by most dog trainers.

I think this is bad behavior for dogs. When we are eating our dog is sent to another room to lay down until after the meal is over. We never feed the dog from our plates and if we give table scraps we do so only at the time we fix the regular dog food.

I see. I always feed our dog in his dish. But sometimes, when I'm eating bread or snacks while I'm in our dining table, I would give him a piece so I guess that's why he was used to waiting in my feet while we eat.

That's where we made a mistake. We didn't train our dog to be always outside the house all the time. We let him stay inside when he was little. And now, I'm trying to keep him outside all the time but it's no use.

Our dog is inside most of the time and when she is outside we are also. But she has been taught to go into another room when we are eating, No one feeds her from their plate and all her food is put in her dish. That way she doesn't beg, only if I am late with her food.

Nope, it don't really bothers coz usually he will just lay on the floor and patiently wait, looking at me once in a while. hehe Sometimes I feed him first so that he will not get wild asking for food...haha
What just makes me annoyed is when we have visitors in the house, sometimes he will roam around near the dining area and he even touch us or even the visitors...which is kinda embarrassing on our part...I don't know with that dog, he's like a kid sometimes that when its just us in the house, we can easily stop him from asking for food and we can just tell him "later.." and he will behave, but when there's other people in the house...he will insists what he wanted!

my cats do that, they are really eager to see what we are eating and even like to have a piece of what we are eating.
Though we see that unless they eat and finish up their food, still they come around when we have our meal.
May be they like to watch and learn how we are eating and what we are eating.
Though they do not like the food which we eat. They never like sweets or rice or curries as we do.Still they make their head move when we move our hand up and down picking up the food.
However they run around and try to show that they are interested.

That would probably make me uncomfortable. It's sort of cute in a way though! I just know that I have cats, and when they stare at you...They can look right through you! It's definitely unsettling sometimes. I have one cat who used to stare at me while I slept. I'd wake up hours later, and she'd still be staring at me! It was totally creepy, and it did bother me a bit. Thank God she doesn't do it anymore!

Yeah, it's cute in a way. Their eyes can look so pitiful so you can't ignore their pleading.
Your cat used to stare at you while you slept? How did you know that if you're sleeping?

I have a hard time understanding how anyone can eat in front of their dogs and not give them anything. I am a sucker for their big eyes and intense stare if I eat..I can't do it. I used to have them outsdie or go to another room..I am a push over and always gave them something..
LOL I started a game with the Dobermans...they tend to wolf down their dry food soI used to scatter the food over the grass and make them find it..it slowed them dowm :)

Right???? How can anyone not mind those big pleading eyes??? But we've got to teach discipline to our dogs. NO matter how hard it is to ignore them, I just try my best and not look at him while I eat. I even tell our dog that he should not worry because he will surely eat after me. ^^
I also play games with my dog when I'm giving him a treat. I will make him stand as I hang the food in the air with my hand.

They know exactly what they want - FOOD!! When you are eating, hey have nothing else that is more important than the possibility that a morsal will find its way into their mouth!
In our house, all three dogs line up with that pleading look on their face - "I'm starving!" Yes. It is an international dog technique.

Yes, that is what they are doing! Pleading! And it always bothers me because I would feel like greedy for not giving a piece of what I'm eating to the dog!

Your dog growls? Doesn't that bother you? I mean, I have always thought that dogs growl when they're angry. I have not heard our dog growled and he does not bark all the time. He's such a quiet dog. It's nice most of the time but sometimes I wish he can growl away those cats and other dogs entering our backyard.

Ooh yes...my dog do it all the time. He can come near to me when he hears foods I am chewing and the plastic that I am tearing off from the packaging. I hate him sometimes for being no manners because he watches me whenever I am eating but now I get used to it already.

What I don't like about our dog is when he jump up to me while I'm sitting in front of the tv. He would put his front legs to my leg maybe asking me to give some of what I'm eating.

Hello Secretbear,
Your dog is perfectly normal.Every dog does the same thing.Mine dog also used to do as she used to sit near my feet and just used to stare me as if she is asking me to give her something to eat.And i am so emotional that i always used to give her whatever i used to eat and its up to her if she eats it or not.
It never annoyed me i know that it is normal behaviour we cannot blame dogs for it.

I don't blame my dog for acting that way. I blame myself because I give him food while I eat so he got used to it.

Hi..
try to give your dog's food first and then you eat so that it will not look at you as it will not be hungry anymore...

That is not good for the Alpha Male pack life. You should always eat first. The dog will respect you for it and know his place in society.

I can't stand it.. annoys me so much!!! Our family dog is now diabetic and can only eat twice a day- as she has her insulin injection straight after.
When she was younger though, she would have to wait til we finished eating before she was fed.. in fact she was rarely allowed in the house when Mum would be cooking or serving food.. (",)

Yes. It is bother me! Very much!
According to some article, we shouldn't eat at the same time with our dog. Because the dog will think that he and we, human, are the same class. So we should eat together. Especially don't let your dog eat first, it will make he think that he is an Alpha!
Anyway, I put my dog on the cage, so that he can't bother me while I am eating :P

We don't have a cage or a leash for our dog. He's always a free dog and now I think we gave him too much freedom.

We can't train our dog to behave while we were eating because my father have spoiled it. But we have observed it to behave when our cat get inside. I think he is thinking that the cat would abduct its food. My dog didn't bother me while he watch me to eat rather i get annoy when i just glance for something then my food i'm holding were gone.

That is why I always tell my little niece to always be careful when she's holding some food and when our dog is around. He might just grab it all of a sudden and my niece will cry because her food is stolen.

My Toy schnauzer named Sam watches me while I eat. I totally hate it but I know its just what dogs do is Beg. so I just ignore him. I don't let him in the dinning room though while anyone's eating at the table, " I say, Out" and he goes back to living room and still watches. I just don't look at him. he has is bowl or food and water out but he wants my food or anyone else's food. He don't get much table scraps. I noticed when he gets a little he don't eat his food and just begs for more human food. So he is limited on how much table scraps he gets.

I had a dog long time before. When I had food, I would share it with him:) Since he ate so quickly, so usually he would eat more than me. I used the snack to train him. Although he is gone, but I still miss him sometimes.

I love dogs but not the way others does. Making dog as if their baby? I like animals but not the way they pampered them. I dont like our dog to be in front of me while eating. Even cat, I dont like them, but in the province we have dogs and cats but not in the city. People differs from each one. For me instead of giving all the luxury to dogs and other domesticated animals, there are lots of kids in the street that need food and care. So why the animals and not the people.

My dog was an outside dog, so she only could watch us when we were making a barbecue. But my Misty was a patient dog and she knew she would have her share. So she would not hint that I give her anything before the guests were served. Then she would have her part of the banquet.
