Football(soccer) was always a social phenomenon, which has involved lot of passion. A football club represented or still represents a city, a region, maybe a different nationality(ethnicity) in a different state, and it is many times a reason to be proud of. The fans identify themselves with the club, which becomes a part of their lives, something which makes them forget the other problems of life.
The same can be told of a national team also, only it is on higher scale and it can make more problems, when rival countries meet on the football field.
And of course I find it very fun to watch and to play, it develops a sense of competition in the person, which can be useful later in the life.
I am also a very passionate fan, but I would take my own or other people's life because of it. It is one of my top priorities, I watch every game of my favorites, a win can make my day, a loss can make me feel miserable. But that is all, I wouldn't harm myself or others because of my team, because I don't see the point of doing that.

This is happening because people feel that the teams are theirs and they would do anything for them. They don't realize that with violence they don't help the team, but they really believe they are helping them.

I think it is the excitement of live sports that gets people interested. I think the unpredictability of sports just adds onto the experience. But I am not sure about fanatics who take others lives or their own based on a result of a game. That I find as ridiculous.
Cheers!
