I was wondering if anyone ever invested in their small website through submitting to search engine optimization instead of doing it themselves

Nope, I never spent my money for SEO, I prefer to do it by myself . Well, I can understand if someone's willing to invest some money for SEO, maybe they have less time and more money. As for me, I have more time and less money instead..

I don't, but i think it's hard to put time and effort into something and not get anything out of it because everyone's competing

I am not expert on SEO. But, I am still being able to make my blog appear on the search engine result first page :). Maybe because my content is unique (less people write about that topic) and it is written on my language.. . But if someone run a website for business and he wants to implement a great SEO, I think they better hire SEO expert to optimize their website..

I've never spent money trying to bring traffic to my website. I just don't feel it's worth it.

I have paid for such a service and, because I cannot afford very much the people who have done the submitting did not do a great job so I probably would have been better off doing it myself! There are very reputable website promoters who can ensure plenty of traffic to go to a new site but their services can be costly and you are better off doing it all yourself than paying someone less than efficient with what they promise.

Traffic exchanges are good for somethings, but not for others, I think it should be a little bit of both. I am curious to doing this because it would be good if I could get a number of my little sites in the engines.

I have been using addme.com and sites and pinging my blogs, i notice really great turn around in the engines, but the major sites are changing so much that it's hard to keep up with things.
