Pure contentment: What is it for you?

Today I went for a drive, hoping for some good pictures. I had planned to take a certain road to the end, but I made a wrong turn. I did take the road until it ended, but it wasn't the road I thought it was, but another one. In any case, it was quite an adventure, since the road was unpaved most of the way, and in some places so narrow I had to be careful to miss the poison oak on either side so it wouldn't touch the car. I don't know what I would have done if I'd met another car going the other way. Believe me, I wouldn't have wanted to back up on that road.
I finally got to a fork in the road. To the left was an address and it appeared to be a driveway. To the right was a dirt road going straight up the hill. It freaked me out, so I chose the driveway. I drove up to a house and was greeted by two dogs and a naked toddler, but a man finally came out. I told him I was lost and wanted to know whether the road that went up would take me to a main road sooner or later. He said it was the road I wanted, so I thanked him and started up that road. The whole drive had been scenic. But the view from the top blew me away. I wanted to share it with you, but I've tried twice and it won't upload for some reason. If someone responds, I'll try it again later.
I got out of the car to walk a bit while I waited for the sun to go down so I could get a sunset shot, and it was perfectly quiet except for the songs of the birds. There were no other humans with me or around where they could be seen or heard. I could see hill after hill and vineyards and orchards going on forever. I felt such peace and contentment there. I could only think of the beauty and praise God for it.
What brings you peace and contentment? How do you feel about going on small adventures by yourself?

I'm not sure what brings that to me completely, but I do love little adventures and journeys. I like to lay out on a chair and read a good book. I have a waterfall kind of close that I really like to visit. I think I have a picture of it on my profile page if you would like to see it. Painting makes me feel pretty good too but I haven't had the chance to do it in a long time. I need to try again.

I do drive there but it is only about 15 minutes away. There is a mountain that you can cross to get in there..takes a few extra minutes but the scenery is breathtaking. It is tri-leveled. There are three water falls...that one is the lowest one. It is quite a hike to see the other two.

I wish I could paint. Maybe I could if I let myself be like a child again instead of telling myself I can't. But I'm not sure I'd have the time or the place. Painting is messier than drawing, and I really can't do that, either. The waterfall looks like a lovely place to relax. Do you need to drive there, or can you walk? It looks like the sort of place that's surrounded by other beautiful sights and that you'd have to walk some sort of trail to get to.

Hi bagarad
Any action of mine that brings a Genuine smile on my wife's brings me the contentment you talk of in this discussion. Within the small 4-year period that we have been married, we have seen too many ups and downs and there was a time that I was 100% dependent on her (even today I am dependent on her no doubt but that 100% has come down to say 80%) and I am so very happy that I have her by my side.
yes, ours was a love marriage but the way she handled things when I was on the bed for 8 months, were really something that I might not have stood if they happened the other way round. But she never ever felt that I was a burden for her and that thought makes me fall in love with her all over again.

Peace and contentment for me is being out in the garden, growing plants! Vegetables and flowers and tending them every day, making sure they are well watered and seeing them grow is a great achievement and satisfaction. I love dabbling in the garden, I am on my own and it's just me and the plants, bliss. The fresh air, the solitude and the peace! Anywhere where I am on my own and there is peace and quiet is a sure definition of pure contentment in my book.

How wonderful, Wolfie! That's how it used to be for me before gardening became a losing battle with the ground squirrels. Then gardening became stressful. I hope you will continue to be able to find peace in the garden and that it will produce bountiful crops for you.

It is really wonderful that you find contentment in daily happenings alone at home or with your family. I think that's how God intended it. This is a paraphrase of something Solomon said: There is nothing better for a man than to eat and drink and enjoy his toil under the sun. Many people do find peace when they work with their hands to create something they can take pride in and use and share with friends. Some might find that peace as they watch a garden they planted and cared for finally bear fruits and vegetables.

I prefer taking adventures with someone else when possible. I also love taking photos and I always have a great opportunity when I go to my friends in Wisconsin. I got some wonderful photos a few years back of the leaves in the fall. I also got photo's of a farmer still doing his field work with horses! It was amazing!

Jill, I know what you mean. I'd probably enjoy my photo walks more if my husband could walk aloong with me, but he can't. It's nice to get a rare view of something unusual, like that farmer plowing with horses. There's a lot to learn in the rural areas.

Hi bagarad,I feel that one should take life as it comes, with adventures and even misadventures as and when they happen I am sure that the experience has made you feel happy and will be remembered by you forever...I too once had a similar experience while I was visiting my daughter at Manipal where she was studying.I decided to take a longer route and lost my way and ended up nearly 30 kms away from the regular route, but ,I thoroughly enjoyed the experience since the place was totally unknown to me and I got to see something different... All the best and happy mylotting

Yes, it's fun to leave the beaten path now and then. Fortunately I had my little adventure on a Sunday afternoon with no deadlines. Wouldn't dare do it on the way to getting shipments to the post office, in case I might be late.

I like watching my favourite movie or reading a book. Also I like listening to music. I really do not know what brings me pure contentment because it depends on whether I have something else to do. I do love looking at scenery, but I feel that the only time that I would reach pure contentment is when I am finally in heaven.

There must be something wrong with My Lot. My friend wanted to upload a new avatar and he couldn't. So try later. I can't wait to see it.
What brings me peace? A good day and being with my guy. And a damn Good Hockey game.As for adventures. Mine are more urban. I plan bus trips to shopping centers. I go alone and have a great time.

Hi there!
What a beautiful discussion. I loved reading your description because scenic routes like what you shared bring peace to my heart and a smile to my face! The beauty in this world can take our breath away if we only took the time to step back and appreciate it. I know I don't do that as much as I should. There's so much to be thankful for, but we're always rushing around through our daily routines and forget that there's so much more to life than that. I love beaches too. Whenever I pick a background for my phone screen or computer screen, I'll choose a beach picture or a nature picture. That's all I see of nature anymore it seems like! I shouldn't have to enjoy it from my phone or computer monitor, though. I should be out there enjoying it. I'm really grateful for this discussion because it's obviously a great reminder for me!
I'm excited to see the pictures you took...I haven't read all the responses on this discussion yet, though, so perhaps I will find it there! My brother-in-law is a pro at taking nature pictures. He's so good at capturing the scenes I would choose for my computer and phone. His work is phenomenal. I find it really great that you were out for a drive, so to speak. I know the route you drove was unfamiliar to you, but it's fun to discover places you haven't been before!
If you don't mind my asking, what state were you driving through? Again, I may find that information as I'm reading through this discussion, but my imagination was already forming a mental picture of what you described. You're a great writer, so I'm sure your photography is likewise! I'm glad you were able to enjoy an afternoon of nature (and hopefully you found your destination eventually as well!)
Thanks again for sharing with us and do take care, my friend!

I also forgot to mention what my husband and I liked to do for "dates" before we were married. We loved to drive around and go places we'd never been here in Michigan. In Bloomfield Hills and Birmingham in particular, there were some beautiful and massive homes that we'd go to see. We'd just drive around in the neighborhood. We love to dream maybe we'd be able to afford a house like that someday...probably not, but that's what dreams are for, right? (LOL) We'd always drive around in the country parts of Michigan, down dirt roads and such. We'd get lost in nature. We didn't usually take pictures or anything, but it was more just for the experience and being away from home. It was something fun to do for us. That's when we had time to do such things! Our poor "driving dates" would certainly suffer each time gas prices rose, but it was a cool thing for us to be able to do. We don't have as much time for that anymore like we used to since we have a house, jobs, and other responsibilities to handle, but it's not a bad idea for something to do when we need to just get away. We can do that as married "dates" too, can't we! haha

California sounds absolutely beautiful and breathtaking. I've never been there, but that's one of the places I would love to visit. It's one of my favorites without even having been there because I know that there are mountains and the ocean in the same state, and those are two things I love. I'd be in Heaven to have both close by. Since I've never been, I'm not sure if there are places where you can see the ocean form the mountains or the mountains from the ocean, but it sounds like such a pretty state. My cousin lives there, and when I got to see her last month she was telling me all about it where she lives. Where she is might be completely different than where you live, though, since it's such a large state. I would love to take at least a week to spend time there. Of course, I'd probably never want to leave after that! Thanks for sharing a piece of your beautiful state with us. I'll definitely need to check out your other discussions and videos when I have a chance! I know it wouldn't hurt to plan some more exploratory dates with the hubby in the future. Last month we were able to go with a bunch of his family to Missouri. I'd been there before, but I'd never actually stayed there, so it was neat to see what that was like. I'm slowly making my way around the US, and have only been to Canada as far as out-of-country ventures go. Come next year, our house will be paid off, (and we are only in our mid-20s!) so I'm sure there are many more vacations to come...they'll become more and more elaborate as we can afford it. We both love traveling. Thanks for the great ideas for places to visit and for making this discussion so enjoyable! Have a great rest of your day.

JJ, I live in California, on the Central Coast that is sandwiched between Northern California and Southern California. I'm glad I took my drive when I did, because just two weeks later it rained hard for a couple of days. Kiler Canyon Rd is probably a muddy mess now, but I don't think I will try to confirm that. Did you see my latest discussion with the beach video attached? This past Friday my adventures were on the coast with ocean views. Looks like I will be too busy for more adventures for a while, since a friends wants me to review a book he has written before it's published.
What you and your husband used to so reminds me of a story my mom told about the early days of her marriage, during the great depression. On the weekends, they'd choose between seeing a movie (then pretty cheap) or buying a gallon of gas to go for a drive. So, you can do it when you're married and have just as much fun. I hope you and your husband will take some time to start having exploring adventures together again. I post all my video adventures to You Tube, because they have to go there before I add them to my online articles.
Thanks for stopping by to contribute to this discussion.

Agree. I, too can just enjoy standing outside looking at a lovely sky or autumn vineyard, or even at milkwood plant whose seeds are burst out and ready to be spread. All speak of God's hand in his creation, from the sun to the smallest leaf.

Depends on the situation to really be honest with you. There are many things that are life that will make me content. Granted, as the mood suits men, I will need a different thing to be contented. My moods and what I feel as if I need or want from each and every day is something that really, really does in fact vary no matter what way you slice it. So yeah, contentment is something that is varied a lot of the time for me.
I think that a good time is just sitting in my room, with music, perhaps on the computer or reading a book. Allowing me to collect my thoughts. When my thoughts are less than collected, I am really not all that content. When my thoughts are rather more collected, then there is more contentment to say the least. Also a nice leisurely time with the family, that is going to allow me to be content. Really there are no two ways about it. Contentment really does vary.

When life swirls around us, and we seem beset by troubles on every side, and we have no time or energy to go somewhere peaceful to retreat from them, that is where we must stop where we are and listen to God. He tells us to "Be still and know that I am God." That means he's God over all those unsolved problems that life throws at us. He is the still point of our turning world. And Jesus promised his peace to believers, a peace that passes all understanding. This isn't peace that changes outside circumstances, but it changes the turbulance within our hearts. It's the peace that enabled Jesus to face his cross voluntarily, knowing he was doing what he was meant to do and trusting his father through it all.

Wow, that was some adventure you had. Sometimes it's nice when life gives you these little pleasant surprises. I also feel peaceful and content when I'm traveling and especially when I go to places where I feel really close to nature. I live in a metropolitan area and it is refreshing to be with nature, especially one untouched by people. I hope you would be able to upload your pictures!

Too bad whenever I try to up load this photo I get a box with a question mark and a remove photo button. I have tried again. I've never had this problem before and the photo is only 139 kb in jpg format.
The nice thing about this area is it's only a few minutes from town, albeit a small town. Drive 15 minutes in almost any direction here and you can find a rural area. But a rural area only accessible by miles of dirt roads is much more peaceful than the ones across the fence from a housing tract.

I feel peace and contentment when everything is going well with my family. My family has been traveling on a pretty bumpy path during the past few years, so the times when things look up are when I feel peaceful and content. I've gotten to the point where even if things spiral downhill, God has saved us so many times that I just know I'll feel peace and contentment soon. Your experience sounds extremely peaceful. Nature can just be so soothing and beautiful.

I can see why you would have a sense of peace and contentment when a bumpy road for your family hits a smooth spot. I can see where your experience with God's faithfulness in the past to your family is an anchor that keeps you calm inside even when the storms rock your boat.

That's wonderful. I somehow envy you how nature is so accessible in your area. I live in a busy city, and there is nothing breathtaking here. The air is polluted, and the streets are also polluted with garbage. I love nature. I also find contentment whenever I take a vacation near nature. I love looking at the mountains and the sky. I love how the wind touches my skin. Whenever I see a beautiful scenery, I praise God for the wonders of His creations. The breathtaking views never fail to put away my stress. That is a nice little adventure you had. I hope you could upload your photos soon.

I have uploaded two of the pictures. I think I'm going to take the best of the rest and do a contest hub with them. I'm quite sure no one else has pictures like this on the Internet yet. What I love about living here is the variety of peaceful and beautiful scenes just a few minutes away. This particular drive took me about two and a half hours because I kept jumping out to take pictures. It's only about 35 minutes if I want the beach or an hour if I want a lake. Vineyards are everywhere. I wish you could visit here for a week and I could show you some of this scenery. It would get you full of praise for sure.

I don't so much any more, but my daughter does this all the time. She's a photographer and she will get in her car and take off for an entire day, driving wherever the scenery leads her. She tells some tales at times! I'm glad that I don't always know when she goes or I'd worry about her all the time.
Pure contentment for me would be about the same as for you. A place where there were no others around and a good view. Our worlds get cluttered with people and thoughts and things that don't really matter and we don't even recognize it until we are alone with God in His wonderful world.

Amen, God is our peace wherever we are. There are times, though, when physical peace helps. I don't worry about her when I don't know, but I do pray for her safety often, and I trust that if more prayer is needed, I will know.
Yes, I believe you two are kindred spirits! [em]happy[/em} You will both have memories to share, that's for sure.

As you described it here I can visualize the beauty of the place and the serenity that surrounds it. Looks like it is a good weekend gate-away, to be closer to nature. Though I am an adventurous person but I have limitations when it comes to long drive alone especially to places that I have not been before. Maybe because all along I am always been travelling in groups of two or three people I find it boring driving alone.

I doubt if you would have found this drive boring. It was very challenging and the scenery was so varied it would keep you awake. The scene I'm sharing here was in the darker part of the road that looked down into a canyon full of spooky trees like these, as far as the eye could see. It made me think of the Rings Trilogy and I half expected to see giant spiders and orcs jumping out at me. I sure wouldn't want to walk in there alone. But driving past and stopping off to peer down and take pictures was Ok.

Sounds lovely. I know you live in a beautiful part of the world because I have driven by that way many times and I know just what you mean by contentment. I like almost anyplace that is unspoiled nature, but I also find contentment playing skill games on the computer. I guess I am just not that hard to please, lol.

I would go nuts playing computer games. I'd rather write. In fact, I almost have the writing part of the hub I'm writing about this adventure finished. Now I have to choose which of the almost a hundred pictures to feature. Maybe when you see this hub the scenery will inspire you to invent a video game. One can feel very lonely on this drive, and you will see if you read the hub that part of my contentment was getting out of those dark spooky woods and onto a wider road in the light.

Hi bagarad, you are very adventurous. I have never done anything like that before. I am very afraid of getting lost and especially by myself. I really like the way you just described your adventure. You are an interesting person yourself. I would love to see those pictures you took. Please try again to post them. As for peace and contentment, I get it just sitting on my screen in back porch in the evenings when the weather permits and sitting out there when it is raining. I can't really think of any other way. I had to drive about 50 miles today and I really didn't know the way and it made me uneasy, I think God I made it safely there and back.

I promise that as soon as I publish my hub that will have about 30 pictures in it, I will post the link here, with the complete story of what you are seeing every part of the drive. So please check back in the middle of next week. It's written, but I can't publish until after the first of the month.
Meanwhile, there are lots of other roads to explore and photograph.

I saw your photo of the top of Kiler Canyon and I was delighted with the wonderful landscape. I think I would find as a peaceful and nice moment to go towards the search of such places. I like sometimes to visit the field where you don't have the noise and hurry of the big city. In the country you can be near the nature and that is a nice event. If you go on those small adventures you can escape from stress.

That's true of most of my adventures. You can feel that same peace in the midst of a vineyard, though, far away from the tasting rooms where the people are. The top of Kiler Canyon Road was peaceful, but I went through a bit of stress getting there -- hoping I'd make it and that I wouldn't meet any cars coming the other way in my direction. Backing up would have been very stressful.

Hmmm come to think of it. that's a REALLY good question.. peace and contentment eh? i would say bonding with my peers. as in have fun. like going out jogging on Sundays, Malling, swimming, it's really nice to good friends who are willing to spend time with you be with you, talk about things, remembering times when we were all still immatures , ignorants, laugh at our mistakes, fights in the past.. I think that would be the finest thing for me ;)

For me those things are stimulating and make me excited, rather than just content. For me contentment is quiet, like something I can just absorb into my soul. When I'm with friends, I tend to be thinking about them, our conversation, and whatever I'm doing. I someitmes feel this contentment when I'm with my husband and we are just together, doing nothing in particular.
