There's one person who made a comment in one of my discussions which is totally out of the topic. It seems that the person is less knowledgeable in the English language and was probably using google translate and got the discussion all wrong. Or maybe it's possible that the person didn't read the discussion well and misunderstood it. If this is the case what should you do? Would you give a negative rating, inform that person of his mistake or report him for abuse?

Hello toniganzon, I think it all depends on the content, tone or intention of the comment and should be dealt with accordingly. As far as reactions to comments from people who may not be very good in English,I think the guidelines are pretty clear: don't hold it against them because myLot has made it clear that they recognize & appreciate it. If the comment was intentionally hurting or offensive or derogatory, then it is better to report it to the staff. If the comment is in bad taste or inappropriate, then it must be marked negative. I think that pretty much settles it from my side!

I didn't hold it against that person. I told that person to read the discussion again. I just think that if one didn't understand anything at all, better not say anything to avoid any mistakes. Because it may appear that the person just didn't care and just wanted to say something to earn.

I can understand. It is bad to indulge in reckless commenting just to fill those boxes-and thereby the purses-up. Appreciate it.

Mylot doesn't require one to be fluent in expressing themselves in English, but comprehension is a requirement to be able to discuss something. Discussion is an exchange of ideas, if one doesn't have an idea then there won't be a discussion to begin with. Discussion is a communication and if the communication is one way, then it isn't an effective one. I think we must all make an effort to understand what the discussion is before making comments in an impulse.

I once responded to a discussion about relationship problems and my response was a description of the islands in my country I didn't misunderstand the topic, I simply posted my response in the wrong discussion (I always copy my response before I try to submit it because of my bad internet connection) In my own discussions I have received some responses that were about a totally different topic. It is my impression that some those responses actually belonged to a different discussion, and that it was a mistake and not a misunderstanding. The other half of the responses are misunderstandings. Sometimes I can tell that the person only read the headline and sometimes the person just misunderstood the meaning, maybe because English isn't their first language. I don't give a person a negative rating, because he or she has misunderstood the topic. Some people write perfect English and some people find it hard to express themselves in English, but everyone is welcome in my discussions. I don't care if people are got or bad as English, and I don't think that problems with the English language is a reason to give a negative rating. I don't report it either. I just try to explain it in a different way, if someone finds it hard to understand my initial desciption of my topic.

I think we should start coming in sight of the fact that on Mylot we should not write comments or reviews at random, just to make "fast bucks", but, at least when commenting on the discussion of another person, saying consistently meet their own opinion but, always on the same topic for discussion. In your case I say forget to segnalate the message as spam, but a maximum reply to him that what he said is completely off topic. Having said this, make your weighted decision.

i'm not really sure toni, only because you know i don't really tolerate fools much either, and if someone doesn't have a basic enough grasp on the english language to not feel the need to use a translator, then maybe they shouldn't be trying to use mylot.. which is for all intents and purposes, an english speaking site? however, as i commented on 3honours comment above, with using a translator, we do not have a "sarcasm" or "homour" button, and maybe they took the discussion up wrong. but if you are saying they didn't understand it at all, not even a tiny bit, i would maybe just explain to them that they didn't understand it. i wouldn't rate them negatively, because i don't really believe in rating negatively unless they are abusive, as they did try to make the effort!

toni i reckon we should rate him negatively for this.. it's clearly meant as abuse ;)

This happened to me before. All I did was let it go and ignored it. I am not sure if that was the proper way because how will that person learn better English, but it was something about god and had nothing to do with what my discussion was about. There was not. Even a way to tribute that into it,

i won't give a negative rating because, as it appears, he does not have the skill, and we have to understand that. though, it is not right to reply when you do not understand. i sometimes tell outright that there seems to be a misconception. sometimes i try to decipher and translate it into a concept that is almost close to what he wrote, and ask if that is what he meant. sometimes, i do not reply at all.

Hello toni, There is one person that I know in mylot that usually types the post out of context, have reported the person sseveral times but it seemed the admin doesn't bellieve it's a violation.we should analyze the gravity of the post, if it's offensive then we just report it, but if it's just due to lack of english we just have to leave it be, mylot is not strict anyways, unless you speak another language other than english

Hi toni Am I that friend of yours? I ask you this coz many a times I do post my responses that dont go too well with the discussions... I normally stay away away from a few categories of discussions but if my close friends start a discussion in any of those, I do hop onto them and mostly as I have nothing much informative response to make, I go around posting anything my heart tells me.... And luckily none of them have reported this to the Admin... and I too have never reported anything like this on my discussions... I only report a response in case it is flaming or contains those banned words... Neither do I give any negative rating. For the kind of response that you got, I think you should appreciate that a non-english person tried to respond... Maybe he got all messed up using that Translate but then, if the response didnt contain anything flaming or vulgar, I think you can always respond back pointing it out and helping the person to improve :)

Honestly I do not see the need for a negative rating unless someone is totally insulting you. I have never encountered that at all. Some people may not understand totally, or their english may be poor. But I do not see the need to give a negative rating. Everyone is entitled to an opinion, isn't that why we're here in the first place? to discuss topics?

I experience it 3 - 4 times already If the respond have abusive meaning for me that person actually understand topic of discussion and he just ignore. I'm not respond or rate this person (Mylot gonna delete it automatically ..... Mylot admin not stupid .....) If that person just misunderstood the topic, I gonna make explanation for him but I still rate him, at least for participation.

I hope I've got this right, I'm thinking that mylot exists by it's members helping each other by calling on their experiences and am under the impression that we converse in English so that we at least have a chance of understanding. If your respondent completely missed the topic, then can you encourage to understand. If that fails then that will be that, they will either gradually get it or leave which ever you will have done your best. That's all that can be asked of anyone.

I f you think more than 75% that he was weak in English then i am sure that you must inform him of that so that he might not do that mistake again for some other discussion. If you think that he has purposefully done that, then report.
