Dont know much about photography but would like to learn something now and click good pictures on my holidays. Anyone to guide me on what I should buy? And where would I get some nice tips on photography.

Hi mayka Since you are saying that you do not know much about photography, yet, I would recommend you look at the various point-and-shoot options. Don't get caught up in the megapixel race, as that really only matters if you want to make large prints of them. 10MP is a good starting point, that will print very good quality pictures at 8x10. Also don't consider the digital zoom of a camera; that is only pixel interpolation, not true magnification. Think of interpolation like this; you have a small picture on your computer that is 640x480. If you keep magnifying that up, you get a bigger picture, but it begins to look blocky, which is pixelated. Optical zoom is the factor you want to consider, as that is magnification caused by the lens. It lessens the field of view, but the objects in that field of view are bigger. Compare that to looking through binoculars; the amount (field of view) that you see is smaller, but all of the objects in that field are bigger, and not distorted. Point-and-shoot cameras range from about 3x (common) to about 30x (superzoom) or more. When you get into the superzoom range, the bodies get bigger, so they are not really pocket cameras, and they also get more expensive. Digital cameras can also capture video, so if that might interest you, look for one that not only captures HD video, but allows for constant auto-focus, and zooming while shooting. DSLR's are even more expensive, have interchangeable lenses, and are geared for more serious photography. For someone starting out, and not sure how much they are going to use a camera, they are probably not a good buy. To get a good idea of what cameras do, and some comparisons of cameras I always go here: http://www.dpreview.com/ They compare different models on a standardized test, and they have sections for photography tips and such. Hope that helps

Thanks for a very detailed explanation which I am sure will help me when I actually go and buy the camera. Will keep all your points in mind. Will also look into the link you have given. I am not so much interested in printing the pictures but only want to save it on my computer. Or may be use them online.

Hi mayka, I save all of mine on the computer as well. I have printed a few for folks that want them, and I also do photo books, but I use an online service to do both. Basically since you know what you expect of the images, you can concentrate on what your subjects are going to be. I have pocket cameras that can literally be hidden by my hand, and those go to 4x, and I have ones just slightly bigger that go to 15x zoom. If you plan on taking a lot of pictures at a distance, like at a sporting event, you might want to go for the longer zoom. It won't hurt to have it when you don't need it, but if you need it and don't have it, that's another story. Hope that helps. If you have any specific questions, don't hesitate to message me directly.

At present I have no such plans of taking pictures of any sporting events because I am not at all a sports fan. But when I go to any hill stations or else the zoo or may be into some forests I may want to take pictures from a distance because I would not like being too near to the animals. So I would like to keep this in mind while buying the camera.
