Today, when I went to the shopping mall, I saw a big Rangoli decoration. That reminded me that Deepavali is coming. I think some other places will call it Diwali.
Rangoli is the traditional decorative art of India. This art is made of coloured rice and put it together on the floor with hand and to form a nice design. Normally, rangoli will be make during Diwali or Deepavali. Rangoli that I saw is made of coloured rice. Is anyone here know if rangoli can be make with others material?
I am not sure whether you can see such a nice art in western countries like Europe or US. Have you see it before?
I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone Happy Deepavali!

Hi yspmyl,
Happy Diwali to you as well
In South people are making the same with flowers, in fact we are calling them same ‘pookkalam’, the word is telling that this is made of up of flowers. There are so many types of flowers available in our native (earlier) and it was very easy to collect flowers and make the floral carpet at the time of Onam (one important festival). Now people started to using colours instead of flowers (now flowers are not available like earlier). So rice flour and other flour is using for making it.

Hi Sreekala,
Sorry for the late reply.
I have never seen any pookollam before, especially where it is made up with flowers. I think just like what you said, flowers can not last longer and not easily reachable and is hard to get many types nowadays. And I think why people not making it here because flower cannot be keep for long. Using coloured rice flour will be much easier.
