According to an article I read in yahoo there are phrases we should avoid using at work. Because saying such words are almost the same as throwing away your hopes and dreams, your goals in life, your promotion at work.
Some of the mentioned phrases in the article can also be applied to our life. And I think it is so true, using such words tends to put a stop in whatever dreams we have. "It's not the right time" or "I don't have the time" are phrases that I have used many times when asked by some friends about my plans in life. And I guess this answers why I am not working now.
What do you think are the phrases we should avoid saying? Have you ever used such words to make excuses about your goals and plans in your life?

"Its not the right time" & "I dont have the time" these two phrases are enough to get a bad impression .As if we some one comes and tell us something and if we say its not the right time then they will either feel that we are lazy or not that serious with what they are telling. So we are trying to drag that to longer time or postpone.
The other one "I dont have time" this says that we dont have time for the work or what they said. This will make the other person to tell the same sentence when we ask for something from them or want to tell something.

Absolutely, this gives a bad impression... and saying it to one's self means that we are either too lazy to do something or we are just not confident about ourselves.

I think the worst phrase that one should never say is:
"I cant do this anymore, or its impossible I cant do it".
Because anything is possible, once we believe that we cant do it we create a negative impact.
But if we keep saying to ourselves "I can do it", trust me one day or the other we achieve that goal or dream :)
I use to say that alot, but after my mother really showed me the positive outlook..
now I never say never!! :)
Cheers.

That's really great! At least you are now being positive in every thing. Yeah I agree with you that we should actually think that anything is possible. It's the only we can invite positive things into our life. It's sometimes hard to do that coz as humans we tend to be pessimistic. But then again, I think we shouldn't entertain the thought.

Yes, I've spoken very negatively against myself. But I believe we can overcome these words and phrases, prove them wrong as it were. We all go through phases in life; at some stages we are full of self-doubt; at others, we are more determined. But I believe each day brings fresh hope for positive change. I don't worry about having said negative things about myself. I will try and be more positive...now. I may fail. But I'm not going to let what I've said against myseklf in the past have too much power over me. I can be different. And there may come a time I can speak only positively about myself.

HI CarlHalling,
That is so true We tend to be negative as well as positive on things. But we should not let everything especially the negative ones overpower us. Its always better to say positive things about one's self. Usually we attract a lot of good and positive things only if we are optimistic.

I have discovered myself many times, saying to myself, specially when missing a chance, "it wasn´t for me", or, before I start something new, I often think, "it´s too hard". These are phrases I try to eliminate from my vocabulary and my mind, but it is not easy. I noticed that most people that answer this discussion tell that the worst phrase is "I can´t do it", I agree, I believe that all this phrases, comes from the fear, and hiden a misvalue of ourselves.

Yes, I guess it is in our nature to say such things. Sometimes we uses this phrases also because we don't want to be over confident about something. But I guess we still should be optimistic in everything though certain things are obviously hard to do, we should not to lose our confidence ^^ I do hope you can eliminate that from your mind - I hope the same for myself as well ^^

The phrase would be; 'I can't do it.' or 'I don't have the ability to do it.' tell yourself either one of this and you're heading to failure. I do believe in positive thinking and the power of the mind a lot. If you are positive and determine, almost anything is possible.

Indeed, such words can end up in failure to achieve our goals in life... we should always entertain positive emotions and thoughts in our life.

Yes, saying the phrase that someone is better than you can push your confidence down the drain. It's like saying "I'm a loser..."

A person should not say "I can't do it" like a child attempting to read a book. A man should not say " I hate my height" because he can't change this. A lady should not say "I won't ever be able to afford that" because she should have hope for then future. She shouldn't say to her kids" Not now, go away because I am very busy". She shouldn't say "I hate you" to her head strong and difficult teenage son. It is best not to say "It isn't the right time" or "I don't have any spare time at all". I believe every person should have hopes and dreams plus try his or her best. I think saying to oneself positive things can make high self esteem and some happiness. I said at a young age about the traveling that I want to do and it came true for me.

Very true, I agree with you on that. Positive things and phrases drives us towards our own success and happiness. This is something I should always instill in my head coz I tend to be pessimistic sometimes
Wow, I'm happy for you for achieving your dreams to travel ^^

I believe that if you think it, you can do it; therefore, if you think and speak positively about yourself and your life, positive things will be the ultimate result. On the other hand, if you are a negative thinker and/or speaker about yourself and your life, negative things will follow. In a work situation, I believe that you should always display as much positiveness as possible, yet remain honest, and of course, willing to go above and beyond in all that you do. So, when an employer asks you do a task that you may not have time to do, rather than saying, "I don't have the time", ask, "When do you need that done?" Then, decide if you can honestly get the task finished on time. If it is an immediate thing, see if you can rearrange your other tasks to complete it. If you cannot find a way to get the task done, then, and only then, should you tell your employer that you don't have the time, but say it in words, such as, "I would love to do that for you, however; I have these other things that are also time pressing and I am not certain that I will be able to get them finished as well as what you are asking. If you cannot find anyone else that may have less going on, come back and I will do my very best to help you."
I think one phrase in particular stands out to me as the number one phrase to never ever say at work. "That's not my job" I think that as long as you are capable of doing a job, if your employes asks you to do it, you should do it without complaining. After all, this is your job, and an employer is not generally going to ask you to do somathing that he/she doesn't feel you are capable of doing. It may not be in your immediate job position's despription, but it just may help you to get ahead in the future.

I agree with you saying "That's not my job" is the things I mostly heard with my co-workers before, and I think I have said that as well though not directly to my boss. But I am really amazed how my co-workers can say that to him. Well I guess these are words are used by people who thinks they're the greatest asset of the company ^^
But then again, this is really a phrase that I will hate to hear if I am running a company. I will have to fire them

for me its the phase "its not destined to happen". because anything worth having is worked hard for and not based on destiny.

very true, we can never tell which things are bound to happen, and sometimes I even say those phrases out of anger, which is really really wrong

This is such an interesting discussion topic! I think as humans that can be easily consumed by negativity, we need to make sure we avoid saying any pessimistic phrases to ourselves that could bring us down. I agree that overtime, saying negative things to ourselves can definitely put a halt to our dreams. Whereas, if you constantly encourage yourself and envision the positivity you want in your life, you'll attract more positive energy and you'll become a lot more apt to go after your dreams and make those positive events unfold.

I agree with you we can attract negativity if we live a life believing that bad things are gonna happen to us. However, being positive in our words and our views may as well bring good things ^^
