Are you into social networking?

Why is it that most people augment the number of their "friends" in facebook and other social networking sites by adding complete strangers? Why do people spend so much time making updates and posting less significant pictures on social networking sites for most "friends" not known to them personally?

I am not into Social Networking at all. I had a Facebook account that lasted a month. Had so many friends requests from people I didn't even know. That makes no sense to me. Guess they just wanna build up their popularity in numbers. They can count me out. There is a life outside of Facebook!

Hahaha...yea, I agree with you. I think there is an ongoing undeclared "ranking contest" in Facebook and other social networking sites. The guy with the highest number of "friends" appear cooler. To accomplish this one has to add total strangers as "friends." Facebook is originally marketed and intended as a social vehicle to connect friends located in various places, but do you think Facebook has also contributed in opening doors to forge new friendships by adding total strangers? I don't know why too.
I don't just add people whom I don't know,
I only add people whom I know and those people
whom I want to be friends with.
The one thing I don't understand is why people
spend so much time posting updates about them.
I feel like no one really cares, I think they're just too vain
and people who ALWAYS update their status for no important reasons
are so full of themselves.

Just like you I am puzzled by this prevailing trend. But I guess posting regular and unnecessary updates, that includes private pictures, pixs of food, etc. on Facebook and other social networking sites is symptomatic of the need for attention that most people crave for. There are ample ways of attracting attention and significance and perhaps this is one of those. Thanks for your opinion. Have a great day.
