just got back from this movie..been eager waiting for it whole year.. and it doesnt disappoint.
If u have seen the 1982 version THE THING..and if u loved it..u will also like this new Prequel THE THING 2011.. the special fx is smooth..the thrill is there.the suspense, the mystery..its all there..and as good as the one done by legendary John Carpenter back in 82.. many people fear that this new one will ruin the 82 version.but nope .it didnt.. it makes watching this prequel worth it.. and after watching this prequel,u can immediately go home and watch the 82 version..and the continuity just blend rite in..smoooth yo!
i gave this 8/10

The Thing was based on a 30's sci fi short story by John Campbell. John Carpenter's movie more or less followed the short story although more graphically. The 50's movie was also supposed to be based on the short story but veered away by making the alien a walking vegetable who did not absorb any of the people at the station.

As I said, Campbell created the concept with his short story which was set in the Antarctic and involved a shape changing alien that would consume and replace living beings. He had no way to anticipate how special effects would be able to capture his idea years later. I always thought that the original movie was kind of dumb for making the alien basically a walking carrot. The alien also did not take over any othe members of the crew. What really seemed dumb in the 50's movie, is here you had an alien from a race that created a space ship that could come to earth and the alien didn't try to communicate and could only growl and kill people.

yes..John Campbell still credited as original writer till this very day even on this new 2011 prequel.. its just that John carpenter's version is the most highly respected compared to the 30s and 50s..stood the test of time..still enjoyable today..(watched again last nite)..thus no sane director wanna attempt a remake..so making a prequel will keep the fans happy. for fear of ruining what already regarded as a masterpiece..

if u seen the original .then u will enjoy this..because the quality of the movie and the direction is good..as good as John Carpenter;s 80s classic.. and this is a Prequel.. at first i also worried whether or not this Norwegian director can deliver..but yes indeed he can..with smooth special fx too..

I already watched it and over-all its a nice prequel! I love splitface ha ha ha. Just noticed that the Thing in the prequel is more aggressive than the Thing in John Carpenter's movie. Maybe it just learned to be more 'subtle' because of its failure in the Norwegian base. And I'm so happy that it is finally confirmed that Childs is still human in the original movie because Childs still has his earrings when speaking with MacReady in the final scene unlike Carter who was discovered by Kate to be an imitation and got fried.

no..this doesnt disappoint..and yes she;s gorgeous in here..awww,...
the reason they not making a remake..(because u never seen the 80s version) for those in the know..the 80s version a mega classic by famed film maker John carpenter. So they just think a prequel will be better..besides ..in the 80s version.. no where in that movie where the alien lifeform originated wasnt revealed..so it this prequel they showed exactly that.!
