We have two eyes and two ears and one one toungue.

How to speak - Speaking and saying something.

Hi all! We have two eyes and two ears but one tongue only. It means that we should observe and listen more and speak less. However, its opposite happens people do not listen to others; they remain interested in speaking and just speaking. When others speak, they just get lost in their own thoughts and don’t grasp what others are saying. Would you agree that one tongue signifies that we should speak within limits and should observe and listen more? Have a nice day!

hello dpk, Speak less, less mistake. Speak none- no mistake. Sometimes I am not a good listener when the speaker is not a good one either. I only listen to a speaker who can motivate me to listen to what he/she is saying. Or depends if the subject catches my interest. I am not a talkative person as well, but I am a keen observer (that I thought so) have a good day and how's Diwali

Hi Jai! I agree that if we do not speak at all, there won't be any mistakes.. At our work place, many seasoned seniors say - "if you are working sincerely, you are bound to commit some mistakes" and others would jokingly remark - "it means no work, no mistake". Yeah, you are very right that speaker needs to hold our interest, while speaking, if s/he is saying something which is beyond our comprehension then we tend to lose interest in the conversation and do not listen him/her with intent. I agree with you that you are a very keen observer. Thanks for your wishes and same to you.

Hi dpk No I dont agree.... We have just one tongue and this makes it rare for us. So it must its priority of being Rare and must be used more. Havent you seen families who have just one kid? S/He gets all the importance and is free to whatever s/he wants. But in families with more than one child, they do have restrictions on all the kids. So by that logic, as we all have one tongue, I think we all should use it more often and there are plenty of people who are doing just that. This is a lesson taught to me by the world I live in. Also, another historical adage to prove my point - Didnt you hear this - "Even a New Born has to cry or wail to let the mom know that s/he is hungry?". Dear, it should be our fundamental right to use our tongues more than our ears as we all have two of those ears

Hi thesids You have every right to disagree. If you feel that tongue should be used more meaning thereby that we should speak more rather than listening, then no problem. To provide all the facilities to a single child in the family is different from having a single tongue. Both are at different footing and should not be compared. Many thanks for joining.

Ha ha ha....I liked the way you expressed you discussion.... I think it is not necessary that all two things are always better than one.... We can say that ears are very clever.....they listen from one side and take out from other side and you will not even know....., and eyes are very dangerous, they see all that they should not see and if you will close one of them, people will think you are winking.......lol. Besides what is the use if eyes observe and ears listen, but tongue does not express it properly. so I think it is the quality that matters and not quantity. Besides,Gandhiji has answered your discussion long time ago representing his 3 monkey formula.....bura maat dekho, bura maat suno, bura maat bolo.....and then all will be well.

Hi aps! Thanks for appreciating my way of conveying the thoughts in my discussion. It all depends upon an individual whether s/he wants to listen with one ear and throw away with another ear. If s/he does not want to retain, what s/he is listening then no one could help. Eyes sees what comes in front of them, it is possible that whatever we may see may not be 'true'. It is also said that 'all that glitters is not gold', yet we should 'see' and observe as much as we can so that we could understand the things in a proper perspective. What Ghandhiji had said long ago, that also holds true. It is for us to decide that what we are 'seeing', 'hearing' or 'speaking' is good or bad for us. Thanks for enriching the post with your humorous and witty thoughts.

The ancient Greek wisdom Socrates syas"God gives us two eyes two ears and just one tongue." He must want to tell us "listening" is important. Listening is an art. One who knows how to listen to others will be loved by his friends. But most of the people don't listen to others when they are speaking. I used to be one. I had a friend. I like to stay with him. At that time I don't know why, but now I figured it out. He always listened carefully what I was talking, and asked meaningful questions at the right time. He never judged me. I lost the friend because I never listened to him, I always talked about myself and pushed him to solve my problems. I am learning the art of listening.

Hi pibi! I understand that Socrates would have said that God gives us two eyes two ears and just one tongue. No doubt that listening is an art and till we are alive and awake, we just can not listen to others. It is sad to hear that you lost your friend because you did not use to pay attention to him. Hope this would have taught a lesson to you in your life and now you would be more careful in future. Thanks for sharing your wonderful experience.

Hi Khare! It is heartening to know that you prefer to 'listen' to others rather than 'speaking'. I understand that your job profile also requires you to be a good listener, else you can not solve your patients' problems. Yeah, you are right teaching profession requires lots of speaking and lecturing, which is not everyone's cup of tea.

I believe GOd has a purpose in each one of his actions[remember the story of the banyan tree and its fruit ]; too much talk is always bad ;"Empty vessels make much noise and silence is golden"--hmmmm! Whoever pays heed to such maxims[including me On the other hand, some people would love to listen to their own voices so much that they just do not have the patience to be good listeners.I have also observed this . Imagine the state of the hapless listener if such people were gifted with two tongues? Joking apart, I feel that less talk is always good and I plan to implement it very soon.

Hi Kala! I agree with you that God has a purpose, when he gifted us with one toungue only. He wants us to listen and observe more and speak less. Your remarks - some people would love to listen to their own voices so much that they just do not have the patience to be good listeners are really very interesting. I find your remarks are very true because I find some of my colleagues (read female colleagues) are too obsessed with their own voices that they will speak and speak on any matter and won't allow others to speak.. Thanks for enriching the post with your thought provoking views.

In my young world, dpk..I can still hear my father saying; "The Good Lord gave you one mouth, and two ears, that means you should listen as much as you should talk!" I guess it was a very polite way of saying; listen and pay attention! It has stood me good steed, all of my life...and today I still live by that! I am NOT in love with the sound of my own voice (as I can talk to myself all I want, LOL!)but make an effort to enjoy what YOU have to say! Have you ever been in a one-sided conversation..where the other person talks and talks and talks...ALL of a sudden they notice you are silent..and they just stammer to a halt! You can see the wheels of thought going around in their heads wondering "what they have said?" It's really quite interesting! I guess I am a woman of a few words, and I try to make them effective. Have a special day! Is Diwali over?

Hi Sree! If those people, who are interesting in 'speaking' only, are given two tongues, all hell will break loose. It is more or less true that we should observe more rather than speaking and you might have noticed that some speak very less but whenever they would speak, they would say something extra ordinary. It is true that people do not listen, they are much interested in speaking only and conveying their own mind. Those who do not want to actually 'listen' won't get affected even if we get to use two tongues. Many thanks for enriching the post.

After reading your discussion I instantly remembered a lady in our family. Some people use to joke with her and say that the day she passes on she will need to plots. One for her body and one for her tongue. lol Funny but sadly she is the type that speaks to no end. She will talk just about anyone and usually out of malice. I agree as sometimes a bit more listening could arrive at more understanding but for some sadly the loose tongue take control. It only really takes a few seconds to listen but oh how fast the tongue can move. If we think about altercations and how fast the tongue moved, one would understand that there at times was a whole lot of nothing really.

hi HwG just thinking of a woman I and my husband knew who just hat to tell us whenever we met her on the street outside our house about all our neighbors. And once she buttonholed us we would be stuck for the largest part of an hour. but one day my husband had had too much of her gossip. She paused and he said,"how do you keep from cutting yourself?" She was puzzled and replied"I dont know what you meanMr Hatley?"He smiled and said" why your tongue is so sharp and spiteful l I am afraid you will cut yourself." She turned red and almost ran up the street. He had to laugh and I did too after telling him." Honey that was not very nice" then breaking down and laughing too. She really did have a spiteful tongue and hurtful gosspip. we learned to avoid her.

Yeah, mouth is used to voice out what is in our mind and it doesn't mean we can be as free as we want to deliver our thought to public. Sometime, we have to be aware of our mouth, because mouth is like mirror. Mouth is a reflection of our mind and soul. People basically do not like people who speak too much. People speak too much is annoying and irritating. I hate people who speak a lot and that make me feel irritated and annoyed. Moreover, everything what she or he says are not relevant with reality. I will go away from him or her.

Hi sijabatnaburjut ! You are very right that we need to be very careful in what we are speaking and we need to access whether the other person is actually listening to us or not. In our day to day life, we find many, who just speak and carry on with their lecturers. If they continue with their discourses, we stop listening to them after due course of time. Some speak, some don't, some speak a lot, some speak just enough, - different levels of speaking as I have observed. Ultimately it balances but it will be sad really when two get together and both speak a lot or two just don't speak. It is the right combination that is the ultimate winner.

do you know something i'd never ever thought of this before. i just would have looked at it from the basic, thats the way we were made angle. i personally sort of just believe we have 2 ears for either side of our head, to listen from both angles, and the same for seeing, but we don't need to speak from any angle other than one.. but i like your way of thinking, it's a nice sort of "emotional" or "mental" aspect of our genetic build up!

Wow! I have never thought it in that way, I can see you've done some thinking there. I just think that we just need one tongue to taste and basically eat. But It's a very interesting concept and I reckon you're quite right. I'm not much of a talker but my group of friends are. I pretty use our two ears more often than my tongue. My ears are for my friends' tongues in which they simply blabber on and on to me and everyone as well. But like you said, some people who use their tongue a little too much may go just overboard and it starts to irritate you. I know people who simply talk about random things and especially about how good they are. It really annoys me but as a nice and shy person, I just let my ears put up with it.

Because of we are human, we just need one tongue,so we can speak one time and not two times in one speaking.. We have two eyes is because it is God perfect creation and to use to see, and look, the light of our body.. We have two ears, and thankful to that to listen in ,to hear what is good and bad..
