oh my goodness I have been fighting this for almost a week. The first time I saw; this huge rat go scooting across our floor in my room I was schocked and glad too as I had thought I was imagining things, that something real had run across the head of my be in the middle of the night. When I saw it I knew I had not imagined. But for several days I did not see it, so I hoped it had run out of our room as my roomie keeps our door open all day. When my son came to see me after work Monday I told him about it and he told me oh do tell the front office so they can get an exterminator to come to your room. well I hesitated as I was afraid I would be told not to keep snacks in my room,But I saw the darned thing again last night. I had a hard time sleeping thinking about that rat. It woke me at 4 am moving about on my bedside stand. that did it. I went down to the front desk and told the receptionist and she called Orkin. they came an hour later and now we have four or five rat traps around the room. so I am praying he or she gets caught sooner than soon. What is your take on this, should I have not waited so long or what?

I would have said something although I can understand your concern they would be more strict with what they let you keep in your room. I just get so grossed out by rats and mice that I wouldn't be able to keep it quiet. If they have a rat it's definitely not because you keep snacks. I would be so creeped out if one of the traps went off in my room at night. I hope they catch it soon for your sake!

hi Ambie pam I was also creeped out and last night I just shrieked on no and the thing ran under my bed. I have not slept well since the first time I thought something ran across my bed. for one thing we aged people have a problem at times here in getting the people in the front desk to believe us. I told Aiada one of the care takers and she laughed, oh My gosh, she la ughed, ugh it is not funny. So again I asked the receptionist if she had thought I was joking and she was already in contact with Orkin. You know I was a little surprised when I first told her about the problem as she right away said I will call Orkin so just maybe they have had other rats here. 'that is also grossing me out. We pay almost one thousand a month to stay here so they should damned well not have vermin running around in our rooms. I love the room but that vermin scares me. glad when itgs caught.

I hate it that they treat you and your other residents like your senile, Hatley. Just because someone is older in life doesn't mean they are going to make up a rat story.

Eek I too would have been up for days on in at night thinking about the rat. I don't like rats and they give me the creeps. lol I am sure with the number of residents there that many do keep snacks in their room, so waiting to say something would have probably caused for the rules of no food to be strict. Anyways this happens just about anywhere and having them call Orkin is nothing out of this world and for all you are aware of they probably have done so many times before. Maybe this is why you had not seen a mouse/rat before or it can just be the start of one or more having finally made their way in. Hopefully this does it, and it it happens again, do tell them as the rats have a tendency to make their way too through your snacks. lol

hio Hwg oh my nerves have been stretched tight so after last night I got down at nine am and told the receptionist we had seen a rat in our room and she immediately said" I will call Orkin } so I am assuming that this is not something new but I sure hope the rat gets caught.Yes I keep snacks in the big drawer in my bedside table for low blood sugar but the drawer has no way anything could get in unless it gnawed its way through . but am hoping it will get into one of the traps and get caught.I imagine this is nothing new as she was very poised. I was annoyed at Aiada who laughed and she turned red when I told her it was not funny to me at all.I hate rats and they do carry all sorts of diseases too. I should have done this the first time I saw the thing.

I just answered one about cockroaches and now one about rats. Ugh! I think that is horrid to have rats. I hope it gets caught really quickly. Awful thing is that my daughter used to raise rats. She had like eight or so. They grew pretty big and she would sell the babies to the local pet store.

It really creepred me out to begin with but I got used to it. The domesticated ones are very clean. The wild ones do carry disease. These of my daughters were fine. I helped her feed them one time and one of the new mothers bit me. I never got into their cages or came near them again. They have huge balls.

The narration is about a rat and the scare it created. I was reading it fully, I did not look into who has posted it. Alas, it is my aunty and that too one who is in USA. You have rats in USA also. I have not seen rats in usa--I use to come across spiders and other small insects. In India we have traps made for catching rats-- we keep savouries inside that. Attracted by the smell they enter the trap to eat and get caught, Then we throw them in a distant place. We have trap with gum --it closes on a rat once it comes on that. It is costly. It costs 2$ or so.

Oh Hatley, you put me in mind of one time a mouse got in bed with me and ran up and down my side in the blankets! I was so scared. I don't blame you for not reporting it at once, because you were a bit concerned that you couldn't keep snacks in your room. You, being diabetic should have access to snacks when you need them. I'm glad you told them though, so that they can do something about it. Hope they get that little rascal.

Yes its scary have a rat get that close to one, yuck and mice and rats do carry all sorts of diseases too. Yes I did not want to not be able to have snacks when my blood sugar goes low.

You should call as soon as you see a pest. If state inspectors were to come in the facility could get in a lot of trouble. Besides that, it might bite you or carry a disease to you. I hope they catch him soon. This is the time of year mice come in one place at my house. My cats will get them, though. I also put peppermint oil on a cotton ball and put in places they might go. It is always the same one area. Mice do not like peppermint, I am not sure if it repels rats as well. Keep your snacks in tins or glass jars and it will be rat proof.

Are you sure it was a rat and not a mouse? Of course I think the city has rats, country has mice, so I would totally freak if I ever saw a rat. Mice on the other hand, I hate seeing them, but they are small enough they really don't freak me out. As for saying something earlier, if rats are anything like mice, then a big YES you should have said something. Because with mice, if we don't catch it soon enough, next thing we know, there is a whole family of them. So when we see a mouse, (which thankfully has been many year since I last saw one in my house) we capture it right away to avoid the multiplication..

Um, 6-7 inches long? That is with or without the tail? With the tail, it might be a mouse, but if it is that long without the tail, it is either a very bug mouse or a rat..

I am hoping the orkin man will come back this weekend to check the traps. the darned thing had run across the head of my bed in the middle of the night. I hate the things and have read they can bite . they also carry all sorts of diseases. I have lived here in Gold C rest for three years and this is a first for me.but they are doing some remodeling up here on the second floor tearing out walls and stuff so do not know if that would bring in rats or not. just hope they catch the thing.I have a hunch this is not the only call the receptionist has got lately as she was quick to say I will call Orkin.the care taker Aiadia laughed , oh my g she laughed and' really it was not funny at all. The owners have a responsibility to us who pay a thousand dollars a month for our rooms to keep the place vermin free, this is dreadful and I am angry.

OMG Hatley, are you positive it was a rat and not a mouse? Rats are very big and this would totally make me freak out! A mouse I could handle a bit more, but a rat??? No, please don't wait any longer if this happens again. I can't believe this and where there is one, there is more. I'm glad to hear Orkin came out and I hope this solves the horrible problem. Watch where you're walking so you don't walk into one of the traps hon! Did this ever happen before? Why didn't your son go directly to the front desk and report this? Please be careful and is there any way you can keep your snacks in a good container? I know you need them and that's fine, but to have a rat running around is ridiculous and that means there is more than one. I hope this all works out for you and they do something more than Orkin. Now I'm REALLY worried about you!

hi Kashmeresmycat I really dont think he thought about it and I was not too worried until last night when I saw it again. I had thought since my roomie insists on leaving our door open during the day that the rat,oh yes its too big for a mouse, would just run out and go into some other room but no its seemed to s take itself ou in our room unfortunate. OH I will be okay once the rat is caught but I think we are going to have to keep our door closed from now on. the traps are covered so there's no way we can get hurt on them. they look like paper tunnels. just hope it gets caught soon. the thing grosses me out.

Some sweet or hot food you have hide for rats only, they found it and make your room like that. Instead of all these rats disturbances adopt a rat, that will finish these all rats. Then all is well.

Oh I am so glad we do not have to deal with Rats. I have heard of others having to deal with this as well around here. We have to deal with mice, and wish there was a better way to get rid of them other than traps, but we own a dog so we have to be cautious too. Well, since you needed to make sure this is what you seen, I think you did the right thing by waiting. Hopefully something can happen to rid your place of these mice soon.

Once you were sure you did something about it. Be glad it was not crawling on you. Yuck. Glad that they came and did something about it right away. The Orkin traps work. I use to work in a place that had them in place all the time. As doors opened and closed alot and everything was ground level. I am sure it will take time before it is caught. If your roomie is still leaving the door open then there is a chance the rat will be caught. Good luck.

I think that the last time I lived in a place that had a rat/mice was back in college. I was living in this old house which was converted into a dorm and just very near the campus. I would set up sticky baits at night to catch them. Good thing I always eat out back then, and I didn't have many food in the room as I didn't want to share it with them.

I feel for you I hate rats and mice both. We lived in a old house that was mice infested and the landlord did nothing about it so we got a cat that helped for a while til he found out about it and made us get rid of it. We also set lots of traps and caught alot. We moved from this house after a fire and we lost most of our stuff. I could go on and on about this place which was a very bad place.I hope this rat or rats are caught soon and I don't blame you for being affraid to sleep.
