My dear friends,
A common drug for high blood pressure and heart problem is atenolol.
A 15-tablet strip of generic atenolol has an maximum retail prices of Rs. 1.46 where as branded 10-tablet strip of the very same salts costs about Rs. 45.
For cancer there is an injection of paclitaxel.
It's generic cost is Rs. 339 where as branded one comes in Rs 4500.
In the same way common generic medicines for seasonal allergies, cough, cold, fever, diarrhea, nausea, acidity, vomiting, headache, etc. cost extremely low whereas the branded drugs are very-very costly.
Despite their extreme cost, branded drugs unhesitatingly being prescribed by doctors everywhere.
This huge difference of cost between generic and branded drugs has been playing a great role in the game of commission between doctors, drug manufacturing companies, medical representatives, pharmacies, and drug retailers.
Today, health industry has become a good business. Doctors don't care about the financial status of the patient. They just prescribe branded drugs so that they get good commission despite knowing the fact very well that equally-potent generic drug will cost very-very low and has same effect.
Both highly costly branded drugs and extremely low costing generic drugs have exactly same potential and effect on the treatment, but doctors are not prescribing generic drugs to anyone due to their self profits.
What can be the solution to this problem?
Do you ask your doctor to prescribe generic drugs?
Do you check the cost of generic version before purchasing the branded drugs?
Or (in some way) do you think branded drugs are better than generic drugs?

Hi friend.
I don't have much knowledge related to this.. but whatever the comparison you have mentioned their is surely huge.. Its really shocking. So far I never gone for such comparison but I guess I should do it. Some times I have noticed that medicines are more costly then the hospital bills.. But I have never think about something like this...

Yes, and we are not helpless...
Would you start asking for generic prescription next time (I pray it will never come) you go to a doctor?

I am also thinking why doctors prescribed the branded ones than generic ones. There is a really big cost difference between the two sometimes around 50 to 90per cent. When doctors give prescription and if i dont see generic on it i ask if it has a generic version because it cost less.

Actually, charvil, it is many times more than 50-90, more like 500 percent or more.
