My hands are a disgrace

Do you have a part of your body which lets you down? My hands are riddled with little cuts and scratches including a nasty infected one on the palm of my left hand. My nails are odd shapes where they have broken (been bitten), and they probably aren't the cleanest you've ever seen. When I rub my hands over fabric I can feel it snagging, so they are pretty tough. The backs are tanned from exposure to the sun, but they're also more wrinkled than they should be. Worst is the perpetual dark stains which come from my sooty cooking pots and seem to resist all scrubbing. My excuse is that I work outside all day and rarely wear gloves. My hands are constantly in and out of cold water, and they just don't get the love and attention they obviously need. If I went to a posh event the rest of me would probably scrub up quite well, but my hands would be my downfall. Do you have a part of your body you feel the same about? Something that seems to resist all your beauty routines and is never quite what you'd like it to be?

My whole body and skin (the biggest organ a human being has) lets me down. I have eczema and so many allergies that it's hard to survive and to be without pain, infections cuts (hands, feets etc) for 1 day. My skin feels frequently as if I have a 2nd degree burn and it looks like that too, it can be infected (pussing) from one moment to an other which is very frustrating. I wish I could say only my hands are a disgrace.

I'm awfully sorry to hear that. I guess I should be lucky that I'm able to do the things I do each day without more to be concerned about than a bit of rough skin.

Oh that's really awful! Isn't there any way for these things to heal?

My legs, more than anything. First, I have developed dry skin, suddenly it is thin and stretched on my legs. Second, I have an elderly cat who sits on my lap, but I comb him, and he itches, then he loses balance and he falls, grabbing at me with claws all the way day. So the thin skin is horribly sliced up by cat scratches and it just does not ever look good. If I get a bump or bruise it stays dark forever. I like to swim and do water exercises and it just looks awful. I would just use my paraffin bath for my hands if they were in bad shape like yours, but I know you are limited on your electric. Perhaps on whatever heater you have you could do a hot paraffin or hot oil bath. It feels really good and helps heal. I think I will plug mine in today, cause it helps aches and pains as well.

Similar at least. My mom always said that cooks who used lard had the prettiest hands and soft as well. Do you have any lard?

I guess anything fatty or oily would do the trick. I've dug out some cotton gloves so I'll give it a go.

My legs rarely see the light of day I'm afraid, but I can join you in having them covered in scratches. I have lots of olive oil. Do you think if I lathered my hands in hot olive oil then put on some cotton gloves it might have the same effect as a paraffin bath?

None that let me down, but my wrinkles due to my old age are starting to make me feel even older than my 57 years. HAHAHA! My right leg used to bother me as Im missing some glands that cause it to retain water making it a big thicker than my other leg. So for years I would not wear shorts for that reason. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB!!~

I think wrinkles are a sign that life has been well lived. At least, that is what I am telling myself now I am developing them!

well, bar a few scars, my hands aren't too terrible, but I have ugly feet... Not so much made ugly by wearing bad shoes, but just ugly feet with lots of problems, but most you can't see... now... my stomach is my fault, its fat and falls down and isn't very much fun to look at... oh well...

I imagine there are not many who are 100% content with their stomachs.

I've always been self conscious about my legs. I think they are far too skinny! So, I don't have a lot of shorts in my closet. Once in a while I would dare wear one, but as I deem it ugly, I'm always wearing pants. I know it shouldn't bother me. But it's something that I've always know even when I was young.

I guess shorts are something it's easy to expel from your wardrobe. I never wear them myself.

There is no need for you to be ashamed of your hands .They are just the hands of labouring people.Winter is at hand,At the thought of what chaps will spread all over my hands,I tremble with fear.I have a hard time of it every winter.

I hope you can escape chapped hands this winter. It is very painful. Thankfully, despite having wet hands often during the day, that is something I seem to escape.

As long as I use the detergent and the like, there will be more chaps on my hands than they used to be.

Thankfully I have never had that problem with my hands. But if there would be a real let-down, it would be my birthmark which unfortunately is located on the left side of my face. I have tried different types of concealers to try to hide it, but it is quite large. I tried to get cosmetic surgery a few years back, but the doctors advised me not to go through it.

I imagine there is little you can do about a birthmark bar learn to accept it as an integral part of you like the shape of your nose or the colour of your eyes. I'm sure it is far more noticeable to you that to other people though. We're normally far more concious of what we see as imperfections than others are.

Maybe you should start wearing gloves?

You're probably right. I should. But I hate wearing gloves and taking them on and off for various jobs where I need manual dexterity is just a pain.

My feet and toenails...I have that toenail fungus and no matter what I do to control it well my nails still heave up. If I polish them they aren't too bad....so glad winter is here and I can hide them for a while!

What's a fingernail??? I think the last time I had fingernails was back in 1982 when I worked in a cosmetic department and wore fakes. My nails are like yours, just as my hands are rough, calloused and scratched. That happens when you use them a LOT for hard work. I figure if people don't like my hands, then they can come to my home and do my work! I cut and split wood for the fireplace that heats my home, I do all the yard work, construction work around the house, plumbing, cleaning and anything else that might need done. My hands take the brunt of the work and they show it, but at least it's from honest work that hasn't been hired out to others to do. Take pride in your hands and how they look, they aren't a disgrace they are honest.

Thankyou loverbear, you are absolutely right. Although I've been trying to wear gloves now the weather is colder, it's not made my hands look any less ravaged. but it's all from honest work, like yours.

For me it is my feet, they are too dry. It doesn't really matter because no one sees them, but still I'd like to have soft pampered feet. Maybe I should get a ped egg. I also use Burt's Bees and it seems to help, but I don't put it on every night as I should. There are hand salves from burt's bees that might help soften your hands up a bit.

Considering the abuse my feet get in work boots, they're surprisingly OK. I guess a quick coat of polish and I'd get away with sandals. I've not heard of Burt's Bees. Something to look out for to see if they do it here.
