What do you think of Self Reliance

In my opinion, that is what made the "American Dream". Self reliance, the ability to hit the wild frontier with out government involvement or intervention. To be able to make yourself, earn your way. To start your own business. To raise your children on your morals and beliefs. To keep the money you earn and to spend or save it as you see fit. I guess I figure Americans are smart enough to handle their own business. Am I wrong? Is this not what being an American is all about? Please tell me your opinion. What sets us apart from the rest of the world? Why do so many people try to "break into" our country every year?
What prompted this discussion is something our president said. I take great issue with this.
At a million-dollar San Francisco fundraiser today, President Obama warned his recession-battered supporters that if he loses the 2012 election it could herald a new, painful era of self-reliance in America.
“The one thing that we absolutely know for sure is that if we don’t work even harder than we did in 2008, then we’re going to have a government that tells the American people, ‘you are on your own,’” Obama told a crowd of 200 donors over lunch at the W Hotel.

So I hope you read this, and put some thought into it. Then respond. What kind of country do we want for our children? Our grandchildren?

I agree with Obama, and he is 100% correct. Look at the house of representatives who want to kill every regulation that was passed after the banks destroyed the economy. I agree with your idea of what our was meant to be, but it isn't what it is, nor what it would be under ANY party control. The problem that we have right now is that corporations run Washington, and they are making sure that they are taken care of. Although Obama isn't stopping this, he is at least a minor speed bump to their agenda. A republican like Romney, or Perry would fast track all of the needs of their corporate donors. If you look at these flat tax proposals they all tax the poor more, and the rich less. This is why I think that what his said is 100% correct. I guess I would be more open to cutting taxes on the rich if it actually help the economy, but the extension of the Bush Tax cuts showed us all that it doesn't do anything but make the rich richer, and the rest of us poorer.

I agree with you on this debater. We DO need to get government out of the way for small business. Not only taxes but regulations. My own small business will suffer from the 1099 reporting. This is just one issue. I bring in such a small amount of money, but could expand if I was allowed to concentrate on the service I provide.

The problem right now is not that person starting a business, and working his butt off, it is the corporations that want to make sure that the little guy doesn't succeed, and so they pay more in taxes so they go under. If you think that our government is for small business owners, think again. Our whole tax system is set up so that the large corporations are taken care of, and make it harder for the little guy to succeed. The problem with what Obama is saying is that he is only a small speed bump to this process, and he needs to be a brick wall. Small businesses create more jobs than corporations, yet corporations get more tax breaks, and write many of the laws dictating their business. Would you write a law that would hurt YOUR business?

I still believe in self-reliance, but the local, state and federal governments are making it extremely difficult. I seem to be carrying more and more of others' loads. For some (my own family/friends, the elderly, children...), of course, I don't mind, but for others, what's wrong with your brain/body? And for those who've crossed the border illegally...go home. I'm tired of paying for your kids' schooling, medical care, etc. I'm ready for the "painful era of self-reliance". It'll be a whole lot better than "the government knows what's best for you era".

lol I agree with you completely! I am all for helping family and community but by my choice. That my hard earned money is paying to give a better life to somebody who broke into the country illegally, better and more comfortable than my own life, well there is just something seriously wrong there.

It's very strange in general to me that people could view government in such a favorable light. It gets even more confusing when people make the argument about business running wild and hurting average Americans without government, when in fact it's because government's in bed with business that that kind of stuff is allowed to happen.
Guys like Obama have the genuine belief that what makes America great is a large centralized government force helping people out, controlling the free market, deciding what's best for the states, and having more say in how citizens live their life.
It is nothing new. Just because we live in an age where you can watch a politician on an iPad, that in no way means they want any less control than when you had to show up and hang out in front of the Theatre of Pompey to listen to them speak.
Wanting to rule over people is an inherent trait of people in general. Sometimes it's malicious and purely about the power, as we've seen throughout history. And sometimes it's the for-your-own-good bit, with people knowing that they know what's best for you, which we have also seen throughout history and which ends up turning bloody like religious wars and Communism.
Obama is of a class of people who believe they should be in charge. I believe it's really as simple as that. I wouldn't say that I believe he's malicious in it. He just believes he knows what's best and that government should make America instead of America making its own government.
And judging from his still large fanbase, a lot of people also believe that we need a strong, controlling government force in America, centralized to boot.
I'm not a shrink, so I'm not sure what type of person would willingly submit to a larger government rule. That's what's always puzzled me about Pinkos and the wannabe socialists out there. What do they think happens to them? My guess is that they believe they'll be exempt from a "common-man" role due to their advocacy position in instituting such a regime. But I digress.
Self-reliance is what made America great. Government has been there to keep America safe, as was always intended. But Americans made America great - average, everyday people, not politicians and grossly overpaid public servants and trial lawyers and lobbyists (in everything but title in this admin lol), etc.

A lot of people would like a huge newly discovered country to test our powers of self reliance! Unfortunately space travel has proved that isn't going to happen again.
Even more people would like to rid themselves of government interference, laws and taxes. That wont happen either.
Basically the dream is long gone.

If there was wild frontiers still, self reliance would be.
However, in an age where interdependence is the norm, there is need for sharing of infrastructure.
As you know, I live in Canada. There we have social programs, including universal medical.
And we have a lower per capita tax burden than Americans.
Greedy Republicans looking out for the rich and TEA Party rhetoric makes Americans look like greedy, self centered, selfish people.
I am saddened for my American friends.

But it is not greed. Nowhere have Americans been told, that we have a right to health insurance. People are NOT turned away in the emergency room. I do not have health insurance, I dont feel anybody else is responsible for that. There is still plenty of cause for self sufficiency.

I stable life for my children. A life where they can live it to the fullest and enjoy every moment.
That news worries me. I'm not American, but I know that in every part of the world, people are having the same problems.
