Why is JFK considered so great?

I would say I know US presidents fairly well, and I can't see how JFK did anything that earned himself the acclaim he gets. He was only president for 3 years (not his fault), failed horribly during the Pay of Pigs, which caused Cuban Missile Crises, and didnt do much over all. He appeared weak and experienced to the Soviets weakening America's global position in the early 60s.

I think the is considered a great president because he showed the country what it could be, and what it should be. He governed like we would like our leaders to, but aren't because they are owned by outside forces. He made decisions that didn't always work out well, but he continued challenge all of those around him to make the country better. The interesting part of JFK is that he was as much a democrat as a republican, and you hear people talk about is bad personal decisions, but few question what he did in office. Bay of Pigs was a CIA operation that went wrong, and we will never know if the president even knew about it before it went wrong. Some believe that our intelligence departments in this country have been involved in every change of power around the world. We will probably never know if that is true, but it was true in this case. He lower taxes, he was a catholic, he was young and good looking, he had an attractive wife, and he was president. People killed him because he was trying to change the world, and he was trying to change the government. Americans always consider more of what could have been, than what was. And, we never do know what could have happened if he would have not been assassinated. But, we all know that he believed in America, and he let everyone know about it.

True, if he were running today, Democrats would crucify him.

Hello Steve and welcome to myLot. I was 15 when JFK was elected president. Unlike our president today he brought the the country together. He was very charismatic. It was like having our own royalty. He ask that we ask ourselves not what our country can do for us but what we could do for our country. He started our space program and also wanted the young people of the country to help the undeveloped world and announced the establishment of the Peace Corps.

Well, he certainly was no FDR politically. But remember the president of the USA is not just a politician, he is also our head of state. Unlike England which has a prime minister for the politics and the Queen for a head of state, we put it all on the same person. I really think that it was as our head of state that Kennedy did us proud. He was handsome, articulate, well educated, brave etc. Leaders don't just represent their people, they reflect them and Kennedy was a reflection of us that we loved. Kennedy's ability to make Americans feel good about themselves and pround of their country was his greatness.

He was young, handsome, photogenic and had a charismatic family. He had an appealing, almost aristocratic air. He exuded youth and exuberance and lacked the staidness of his predecessors Ike, Truman etc. He was a WW II vet and part of a new generation that was leading America. He was very popular and was victim of a tragic, historic assasination. Despite his personal flaws and pecadillos, there has developed a mythic heroism about him. He was much the creation of a media that adored him. He took a decisive, courageous stand in the Cuban Missle crisis when we came closest to a nuclear war than at any other time in the cold war. He took a courageous stand in the civil rights struggle despite massive resistance in Congress. He proposed civil rights laws eventually passed under his successor LBJ in 1964. He also proposed income tax cuts, in part reducing the top marginal rate from 91% to 70%, which was also passed in 1964 under his predecessor. Ironically, the GOP in that period opposed his income tax cuts because they believed they would unbalance the budgets and create more debt. Whatever history thinks of him, his administration was part of a transformative era.

I don't know if it's true but he was honest, didn't corrupt himself and wanted to make big changes, he really loved the people and it seems that his changes were hudge and he was even going to come out with some America's dirty, he would change the White House forever so that couldn't come to light so they killed him. This I found in conspiracies, I don't know if it's true but it probably is, why else would they kill him and the world is getting the feeling the country changed.

HI... I think JFK is famous for his work to stop racism... That is what made him a great man, I trust... Other than that I hear that he played a great role during Cuban Missile crisis... I got to read an account written by his brother about it. His brother states how firmly did the President handle the thing... I don't know any other than that... :)
