terrible problems

I am having the hardest time finding a decent place to live. I moved last year to what I thought was the best place I ever had. It was okay for about two months and then I began having major electricity problems. The landlord fixed the electricity once, but it started with major power outages again since July. We sad in the pitch black for 17 and a half hours one time. Then the electricity came back on. The electrician said that he cannot fix the problem until he sees it when the power is out. The trouble is by the time he gets here the problem is always back on. I am so scared now because the winter is coming and I don;t even know if the heating is connected to the same power source. If so we are going to freeze to death. I have applied for a low rental and I am waiting for an answer. But the electricity has busted my computer, the hard drive has gone for sure and as far as we know it could be something else. Time will tell. I just have to get the hard drive and then go from there. It is just incredible the housing problems I have is like living in a third world country that face these issues all the time

Oh I am sorry to hear you are experiencing so many isues with the electricity there. I believe the electricity will affect your heating and being disabled they have to take into account that you cannot live this way. Yes here in our apartment we have a lot of issues. As here we are with temps in the teens and still the landlord has not turned on the heat. Decent rental here in Illinois is quite epensive so we cannot afford to move at the moment. Last year he left us during 30 below zero Farenheit and no heat for 3 days straight. Can you complain as with the disibility someone really needs to listen. Plus it sounds like this is a fire hazard too. I will also pray for you and hope descen housing comes through for you very soon.

the heating may or may not be affected depending upon what the electrical problem is and how many power sources or power lines there is. oh the low rental will give me a place I know that it is just a matter of time. It depends on availability and I am jumped closer to the top of the list because I am disabled. 30 below zero that can kill you. If the electricity goes off then I will just have to call the city of montreal and have them sent a health inspector but I am hoping it will never come to that.

hi winterrose sometimes you have to go to whatever board governs problems in apartments and have it inspected. we had a water leak conming fron the people upstairs and it made huge bubbles in our bathroomn walls, and the landlord just turned a deaf ear. so we got the health people and they sent their own inspectors and plumbing experts and charged it to the owner.well sadly the land lady got in a snit over that and made us move. but the housing authority made them give us our past months rent back plus all deposits we had paid.we found a much better built apartment for less rent in the town we wanted to live in in the first place.

Hi there.. I am facing kind of a similar issue.. I want to relocate too. But I am not getting a good and suitable flat for a bachloer, who stays alone... I love cooking at home and if I could shift somewhere where they have a good kitchen, I'll be able to cook at home for myself... God help us!! Good Luck to you!

the bachelors here have little kitchens where you can cook, but the housing is very expensive unless you are able to get a low rental

hi winterose yes Canada is sure not a third world country.something about your electrician saying he cannot fix the problem until he sees it with the lights off sounds phony to me, as though hes just putting you off instead. I would insist the landlord get a different electrician as I think the problem could be fixed even when the lights did come back on. I can just imagine what it did to your hard drive wow. thats sad.To me I can bet its the wiring as it is here in Gold C rest we cannot seem to go more than two or three months without the lights going off. most of the time the old time worn generator does finally kick in and the l ights come on but I really think the three owners are pinching pennies in the wrong places.they should get a modern generator for a two story huge building housing one hundred some people here.Do you have a better housing complaint company, I cannot think of the name here in the States but they go after things like this electricity problems in rentals and make the owners and land lord get them solved for the tenants.I am sending some prayers that the landlord gets on the ball and repairs whatever is causing the problems.

the thing is there is a rental board, but the landlord will bring the electrician to testify that he has come several times but the electricity has to be out to find the problem there is just no other way around it.

I hope you can get the low rental. I don't know what we would do if we didn't have that. THe prices on places around here are very high. In our apartment complex we have three different inspections every year. Plus we have a annual paperwork we have to fill out as well. It is frustrating but I try to understand that is all for the best and because of the FHA grants.

yes it can be a hazzle but it beats living in apartments like me, with practically no electricity and the rent is 3 quarters of my pension

This is a really serious problem I'm no Us citizen, yet I know that landlord is responsible for equipping the utilities of an apartament and according to the agreed payment is required to ensure correct functionality of utilities. He has no right to force you sit in the dark. See of this come to a category of fraud or something. Read the contract you signed. A complaint is recommended and also the change of repair company, perhaps a friend of yours knows someone reliable. However if there is a problem that requires the installation change, then the move to other address is a recommended solution, as it can accurr higher costs. And that quickly before coming cold. It is not worth the strees. You will have to pay electricians untill you get the amount you would've payed if you were changing the whole plant. If you've found a good place, for sure you can find the second somewhere. Talk with neighbors and find out if they encountered similar problems, ask their opinions. By solving I recommend a type o care heater, there are some who consum less, you can borrow from someone or you can buy in installments. I know that is very inconvenient and you try to do something. So I wish for You to solve this quickly and may post again and tell us what you did.

right now I am waiting for my low rental and hoping the electricity stays stable in the house until then. If not I will have to deal with it if the heat goes out, right now I do not know if the heat is on the same power source. As far as regular housing no I can't find anything cheaper I have been through all of that. So I await the low rental. I am not in the usa I am in Canada.

That really sucks!!! I am currently involved in a dispute with a neighbour who will not leave me alone. He and my husband used to be friends, but since the guy started harassing me, my husband has tried his best to sever his connection with the man, but he keeps coming back and harassing us. We are going to court on Nov 1st. The reason why I bring this up is because my landlady is threatening to evict us and the neighbour. But why? WE are the victims, here!!! We're sure looking forward to what the JP has to say in court, on Wed.

Is it because of the place you are living, or is it the power company at fault? I am so sorry you are having this trouble. With winter so soon in the future I would be scared as well.

Hi Winter, I think housing issues are a problem everywhere. Here, we have many, what we call Slum Lords. The landlords will charge outrageous rents and do little to nothing to maintain the property. For a really decent place, you had better have a really decent income because those rentals are unaffordable for the average person with one income. They have laws and standards regarding rentals but to get someone to enforce them is quite a process and many don't bother. I live in low income housing and I will say that at least they maintain the apartments and you pay 33% of your income. Some forms of housing will help you with your rent outside of a complex and they also will demand the landlord to keep the property up to code. A lot of landlords don't like to accept tenents who get low income housing aid for that reason. Even though they are guaranteed a check each month, they are held accountable for making their property livable.

thanks hon, because I am disabled, I do get pushed to the top, but still it is a matter of availability. Keep praying for me hon. The power in Quebec is great we sell our power to the us, it is just this house and wiring in the house that is the issue.

Electricity is surely necessary in our daily life. You had better move to another house, winterose. It seems that this winter is colder than ever before. You can't slum it.

I know what you are going through because I talk to you on a daily basis. You are right.. it's about like living in a third world country where the electricity is shut off for hours at a time. I hope that you never suffer hours off anymore during the winter, so that your house doesn't get cold.

I have electricity problems also. Already for 7 years and I don't think the landlord will ever do something to it. My electric oven, laptop, etc all burned. The lights go on and off for no reason. Sometimes for long periods at other times not at all. I had electricians over here as well, also because my bills are sky high as if 3 families are using electricity. After years I got an extra meter but nobody showed up after that anymore. I am getting tired of it all. By now I am used to live in a western country, pay for high electricity bills and live like the dark middle ages partly in the cols as well. If it´s very cold I go to bed early, I wear sweaters inside the house even if the temp is not that low at all outside (the house stays cold and humid) and if I ever have the chance I move out to a better and warmer place.
