Bad Cough

I have not been this sick for almost a year. It all started with a simple cold, then progressed into flu. I was down for more than two days and I could not even get up to prepare a meal. I was able to find my mother's flu medicine and I am a little better now. Plus, it was good that I was able to buy a bunch of grapes when I went to the grocery a few days prior. But what has been bothering me now is a bad cough that is dry. I am still a little woozy so I cannot go out to buy anything and I don't have any cough medicines here. I am alone in the house and I don't want to bother any of my relatives with my flu, cough and colds because they will all worry. Have you ever been in this situation where you are so sick but don't have anything in the house to alleviate your sickness?

Hi anne!
I've been in this situation many times. I have asthma and allergies horribly bad so I get like this a few times each year. I've found, over the years, that the best thing to help a cough is honey. I actually make my own cough medicine for me, my husband and our children. We take a mason jar for canning and fill it up with soft peppermints. Then add one shot of whiskey (to help sweat the cold out) and then put a couple of table spoons of lemon juice and fill with honey. Adding the honey helps with taste, but it also coats your throat to where its not scratchy and so irritated. It works wonders for us!

I'm out of honey and last year this helped me a lot. Tomorrow if I can stand for more than 30 minutes I might go to the grocery and buy fruit, honey and that cough expectorant medicine that works well for me. Thank you for your response.

It might be worth while if you could find a store that will deliver your order. You are correct to be getting an expectorant.

My friends rescued me last night and picked me up and we ate at a Singaporean restaurant. They serve ginger tea with honey and I had some. I did not really like the tea because it tastes different from the regular ginger tea that I take. But sure enough, it's as if there was an "off" button for my cough because this morning I wasn't coughing anymore.

In your case, it will be best , if you can consult a doctor for your dry cough. It could already be a symptom of something serious.
With a whooping cough, at least you can spit out the phlegm. But with a dry cough, since you cannot spit out the phlegm, it will strain your throat to ease it.
Our daughter, has been having a dry cough for at least a month, because she was in a far city studying and she said she has no time to consult the doctor about it. Hence, when she comes home during their semestral break, we brought her to the doctor.
She was given an antiobiotic good for 3 days only, which cost a lot per tablet, but after the said 3 days, the dry cough was totally gone .

Thanks for your response. I do know that I will be prescribed with antibiotics for my cough because of my asthma. Every year around this time, I develop this cough which goes away by February to March. I suspect that it's the pollen here where I live (my Mom's house).

The symptoms usually come around late August to September. These are the months where here in my country the weather changes to our cold months. Since September passed I thought I was okay. This bad cough just comes once a year, just during this time.

So now i understand why you have a dry cough and how often do you have it. Yes, i still suggest that you see a doctor about it.

Since you know that you have allergies that aggravate this condition, you may want to buy a nasal saline spray. Or a neti pot or sinus wash. They all are basically the same thing. I even have a recipe to make your own saline rinse inexpensively. Using this will wash the pollens out of your nasal passages that are giving you problems. Common items you have at home that might help with a dry cough until tomorrow would be a chicken soup even canned or packaged. Add extra garlic and onions if possibles. You can use brown sugar or even regular sugar and add half as much water and boil it. Not as good as honey but it will help. Dark chocolate will also soothe a cough. Most of these items are better than what you can buy in the store.

I do have a nasal spray and have been using it consistently. That's why I was surprised that I would get this sick becuase I have not been this sick for a long time. I don't have any soups in my pantry, and most of the food that I have are expired. My mother might have been too sick to check on the expiry dates of these food items because some have been expired since July. I hope dark chocolate can help, this is the only item left that is not expired in the fridge aside from the fresh produce that I bought last week before I got sick. Thank you for your response.

If I were you, anne, I would have asked one of the relatives to buy me a dry cough syrup, a bottle of Vitamin C, and some juices that would speed up the recovery from the flu. But if you don't like to bother any of your relatives, simply drink lots of water and get enough rest and sleep. Even mylotting could be tiring... Do get well...

I tried some garlic tablets once and I found that I was allergic to them. I guess it's the gelatin used for the capsule because they say it's made of seaweed. Thank you for your response!

A dry cough is an annoying, persistent dry, hoarse cough that does not cause any mucus of phlegm to be brought up.
when I was child my mom used to give me honey to cure the cough.
Not only is Honey an effective way to sooth the sore throat, it helps stop the dry cough. Studies have shown that honey is just as effective as the average over the counter cough suppressant. Honey is one of best remedies for dry cough.
Garlic is good remedy too but I never could tolerate it.
This is a very versatile herb. In some cultures, they use Garlic as a dry cough remedy. For those who aren’t fans of this intensely flavored herb, you can boil garlic until it is tender. Then ground it with honey to make it taste better. You can take this at it is or mix with apple cider vinegar or lemon juice for a refreshing beverage.
I remembered that we had an aloe at home so when we were sick my mom used to make like a juice with that.
The extract of this plant is mostly used for skin care products because of its smoothing and softening abilities. But in some cultures, the extract of aloe combined with honey makes for instant cough syrup that can soothe an itchy throat and lessen coughing attacks. You can also try natural aloe juices sold in many supermarkets nowadays. They’re very tasty and is an excellent dry cough remedy for kids who don’t like the taste of medicine.
I hope I had help you with your cough and I am sorry that you are alone in this kind of situation, you and me are similar because hen I am sick I prefer to stay in ilence because I don't to bother the others.

My friends are picking me up in an hour. They are my bestfriends since we were kids and they have volunteered to bring me to the store to get my meds and some fruit. Thank you for your response!

anne25penn,
If you do not find anything unusual or that you are not getting worse, then I believe you probably need some good rest and a blend diet. Sleep it through if you can.
Otherwise, I have to ask that you consult your doctor than self medicating with your mother's flu medicine that could (I hope not) have expired. I have found complete rest and soft diet to work for me when I have a bad bout of flu that does not seem to head anywhere.
So, take care and do the necessary for yourself.

I will go see a doctor when I am a bit well. I still have a slight fever and it's my cough that is bothering me. The flu meds aren't expired but I was heartbroken to find the biscuits in the fridge were. If there is anything good from my being sick, it's the fact that I lost ten pounds in three days! Thanks for the response!

yeah, i've been experiencing that situation, but all i did is took a rest and drink lots of water, sleep and then when i woke up, i feel better. however if the signs persists you need to go to your doctor to check if something is not normal in your body. remember that early prevention is better than cure. have a nice day!

You need to call somebody to buy the medicine for you. Do not hesitate to do so because once your cough gets worse you maybe hospitalized too. And remember also that there are several types of medicine for the kind of cough you have. If the phlegm accumulates it may lead to bacterial/viral attack and so you may be prescribed with antibiotics. Sometimes it is dry causing chest pain. In the house, you should always have paracetamol for fever and ibuprofen for muscle pain, as for the cough even if you do not have it in the house at least you can still find time to have it bought because it takes time to get worse. My experience when I have no medicine in the house was when I got diarrhea and it was in between midnight and early dawn, I was almost got dehydrated.

you know ive not been in such a situation like that before because my loved ones are there so in this kind of situation you really need your family and friends and most importantly you need to see the doctor because cough is a very bad symptom of a serious sickness approaching,it might not look serious at first because it is still developing a gateway in opening the main sickness and if you're not on medications might occur.A running nose will erupt also because they both go hand in hand so it is best you see a doctor so that you can be on medications immediately.dont worry you'll get past it if you're on medications.it is well.

I recommend you visit the doctor. I'm not a doctor. But from experience I know that your symptoms suggest respiratory tract infection.
