How will you earn a living as an artist?

My father discouraged me taking up fine arts. According to him, there's no money in doing art works. I believed him and so I took a different course and now I work as an Human Resource Specialist. However, I long for going back to painting and doing sketches. I really want to continue and have a career in arts and in writing. How to do it? Well actually I don't know how. Is there anyone here who can help me change career? Can you give advise?

Hi! There is money in doing art works! Through business. You can do some paintings and sell them. I have a few friends who do that. Although I'd have to say that it would take some time and quite a lot of money in order to earn a really big profit coz you need to but those expensive brushes, paints, etc., and set up a gallery to showcase your artwork.

No probs! Oh yeah I forgot to mention that my uncle is also an artist. He doesn't have a gallery too coz yeah it's too expensive. What he does is join a membership on some local artists club/group. They would then display their works at malls like in SM Trade Hall, etc. That's one of the ways they could display and showcase their art and sell them If you want a big time profit on your paintings then yeah you need to establish your name first, but don't worry, there are a lot of artists out there whose names are not yet established but still sell their paintings I remember my sister in law's husband who bought a painting from his coworker who's moonlighting as a painter. The painting was really beautiful but it was just very affordable because he wasn't an established artist yet

Hi veronizm. I need to establish my name first as an artist. I don't think I'll set up my own gallery because that would be very expensive. I'll just look for gallery owners who would feature my works. Thanks for your comment and have a nice day.

Have you thought about being a cartoonist? Newspapers need people to do sketches for their columns. Also sketch artists are needed in court rooms, though that is quickly changing with the allowance of cameras to record the trial. Try it part time on your off time. Painters and fine artists do not make any money while they are alive. Weird how that works, but once a painter passes on to the great canvas in the sky, suddenly their art work has more value. Paint and put them on Etsy. Perhaps you can sell some of your artwork that way. Also local galleries have art shows, and they would show your work at an opening. Keep your current job until you can support yourself through your art.

Thank you for the advise. Actually, I am doing that right now. But most of my paintings were not sold because friends asked for it and I give it to them. This time, I want to be serious with my paintings. I am not getting any younger and I hope I can use God's given talent. I don't think I can pass as a fine artist for court room. I haven't got that enough experience or I have not improved my sketching much since I got hooked on my current career. As a cartoonist, I will consider that. I just need to come out with a cartoon character that would work or at least apply to a local newspaper. The problem now is I got to start developing my portfolio. Thanks again for the suggestion. See you around.

I don't think I would do your advise in looking for new set of friends. They appreciated my paintings and I gave it to them during the time that I haven't thought making a career out of what used to be my hobby. If I tell them that I am going to make it a job, then for sure, I'll get the same support I need from them. Thank you for commenting anyway.

i dont think it is easy. there are lots of venues to sell your works but everyone has heard of the term 'starving artist' and it is true!

I know that it will not be very easy. My consolation is that I am computer savvy as well. Maybe I can mix my artistic creativity and my interest on digital designs. Then I'll have the canvass as another medium. Thanks cher913. Have a nice day!!!

good for you, you're now a human resource specialist..if you really want to do those art works..and since you already have a job..you can slowly shift to what you wanted..while working, you can enroll yourself to it..you may choose to be a full time student, with a part time job..or a full time resource specialist and a part time student..or just a full time student, if you have saved enough money to support yourself..you may try to hit 2 birds with one stone..

I think being a resource specialist is not bad at all. To be honest with you. Sometimes we take things for granted. For example. I love silk screen. I love the art of making designs and make silk screen. that why I stop working to concentrate and study silk screen. But here I am. Love and hobby does not bring food in the table. Theirs just too many who do silk screen. Same thing as you. painting right now is just for rich and traditionalist if you ask me. Go to Bill Gates house and what hang on his wall are electronics screens portrait.

You are right bulastika. Many has resorted already to digital pictures. I just hope that there are still many who appreciates good art work. However, many cannot afford the cost of a quality painting. My dad is into silk screen as well. Actually, he has developed a chemical that works well with the silk screen. He gets a lot of job during holidays from companies who produces t-shirts as promotional items. It is just a matter of connections.

Create your own website and post the images of your work there. place an opt in form so that people can leave their name and address. create a fan page on facebook and post your images and articles there if people are interested in your work they will be prepared to buy from you. All this you can accomplish from home. The best part is its not at all expensive to set up ur website and bringing visitors to ur site can be thrilling and a great learning experience.

Hi fannekhan. Those are good ideas. I will do that. But first I need to start my portfolio. I haven't started taking pictures of my works yet. As soon as I have enough articles to sell, I will start my website or just a blog first. Have a nice day!!!

As an artist many people are successful, some paintings go over 100000 USD at auctions..... however they are professionals... I think practicing art is not a bad idea and as an artist you should do it as part time because then you have both a new job as well as your old job... try making your arts with meaning to it, that is they should signify something and you will have pretty good luck on it try showing your father eminent personalities and even some of your own art maybe he will change his outlook, in my country at first girls weren't allowed education, however now that discouragement is now gone due to various factors and willpower from people Being a cartoonist is also not a bad idea as suggested above....

Hi rubystone69. Arts is a form of expression. I also believe tat a good art should have meaning. Thanks for the advise. My father is now content that I became a manager. He saw already that I can earn enough to support my family and myself. I guess I just have to show him that I can continue helping the family financially and he will leave me to do now what I really want to achieve in life. Have a nice day!

I am an artist and I would love to quit my job and focus on my art instead, but at the moment I don't earn enough money from my art. I hope that will I be able quit my job one day, that is my long-term goal. I have an online gallery, I would prefer a "real" gallery that people could visit in person, but it is too expensive for me at moment, so I have created an online gallery instead. Maybe you could create an online gallery as well? A "real" gallery is better, but an online gallery could be a start. Some of things that helped me in the beginning were an exhibtion at a café and some articles in different newspapers (about my exhibition) I also made some posters about my exhibtion and I placed them at the library, in coffee shops, movie theaters etc. One of my friends who is also an artist has had exhibitions at different clinics. She walked around and visited all the doctors, dentists etc in town and asked them if them wanted to use her waitings in the waiting rooms and some of them said yes. Some of the patients who saw her paintings in the waiting room liked the paintings and bought them. That is another thing that you could try. Galleries aren't the only places where you can sell your art

Anyone can change one's profession at any time in one's life. I did it. I had a 9 to 5 job doing administrative work. I chucked it for designing and executing landscaped gardens which was my passion. As far as you are concerned if you are depending on your new career for your survival you need to do some research about the demand that exists for your kind of work.

Wow! That's so nice to know. Your own experience motivated me to continue with it. I hope I'll be successful at it just like what happened to you. Thanks all knowing. I will follow your suggestion to research on the demand. It would surely help if I know the different area in our country who would entertain or accept my art work and sell it.

If you really love drawing then you can do it as a hobby. That's the only way you enjoy both worlds. And about the money. If you love what you do money is not the reward but the happiness of doing what you love. Gets the point? And my advice is make friends with other artist. And do some weekend exhibits if you want to be recognize.

my freind if we want sucess or money in any field we will have to work hard there is no short-cut........ you did it well you went with your dad`s decision........ but your own interst are also....... so if you are intersted in painting and other art work and want your carrer in it....... just start it at low level means do it part time whenever you are feeling that you have not any work or you find a situation about painting just do it then....... and try to publish it....... if it would work good than job you are working than it would be nice..... and you would have option to opt your desired career....... my advice is that you start it as part time if you will get successful do it full time if not you would need to sharpen your art.......... and try again

Thanks princelove141. Right now, I have already started planning for it. I better get a job that is less demanding so I can have more time doing what I really love. I usually sleep very late at night because I want to finish my projects. However, the consequences are... I wake up late and sluggish and my current job suffers. I will not be happy if I continue doing this because I'm a little of a perfectionist and I need my rest to keep my mind active. I pray that I'll be able to manage and implement my plans well. Good day to you friend and thanks for sharing your thoughts.
