The first thing that comes to my mind really, is why are we still using the words Philippines and Filipinos. We all know the Spaniards gave that name in honor of their king. Have we not any plans on moving on with it? I mean, the name is very historic, yes. But it's also unnationalistic. Calling myself a Filipino feels like I'm still honoring that Spanish king. It seems like I'm in great debt of the Spaniards, but of what? For giving us a national hero and rich war history? Think of any other country that still uses the name given by their conqueror. Maybe that's also why people in Mindanao want a different name. The Spaniards did not really invade the Muslim sultanates, so why would they want to be called Filipinos when there's no direct significance to them?

very nice answer. however changing the name Philippines, i think that would be to hard to do. and many of our historians may wouldn't agree with it, however maybe we could appeal to the higher court. moreover, for me there's no problem with it since i don't have any hatred with those Spaniards. what I'm thinking now is that, what if we are state of us. i know you know also that there is this one time before when the us government is trying to make Philippines as one of it's states. maybe most of our co Filipinos nowadays are not suffering form extreme hardships. well, I'm not saying i should have been an American. however, above all, I'm still a Filipino and history is history, this may happen without a purpose. we're Filipinos so be it.
just in case you were given the chance to choose a name for our country, what name will you suggest?

Indeed, that's a very hard thing to do, not to mention long process. I don't have a grudge on the Spaniards either. It is just a thought inspired by my history teacher back in college~
I do think, if it were called Island of South Asian America or Republic of Nippon Tagalog, or any other American or Japanese derived name, I still wouldn't like it. And honestly, I have been thinking about a name after I wrote that comment~ I was leaning towards a Rizal-derived name or one similar to Bansa-Moro.

For me, Filipinos are unique. Why? Because we have different sorts of talent. Whether in sports, in singing, drama, pageant, and writings, we Filipinos do excel. We do our best to help each other for the progress of our country.

Filipinos are highly resilient people. we easily get up and recover after every storm that hit and destroy our country and in spite of all the hardships and the pain that we suffer we still are capable of smiling our warm sweet smiles that send a very loud message to the world that we will soon be okay. i am forever a proud FILIPINO!
