Buy one get one free

India
November 2, 2011 2:53am CST
Here in my city and throughout India, one can see schemes like ‘Buy one, get one free’, ’30 % free in this packet’ , ‘one tooth brush free with 200 gram tube of toothpaste’; just to attract buyers. But if you compare the prices of ‘with some offer’ and ‘without offer’; you can very easily see the increased price in ‘with some offer’ products. So nothing is really free, it is just the technique. So what is the scenario in your place, do you buy the so called free packages at higher price or the ones with no offer? Please comment and share your valued opinion. Kalyani 2/11/11 God bless you

Dear Ms Kalyani Quite true. We in Bhubaneswar too face this problem. A few days back during dusshehra we (me and my wife) thought of getting some quotes for buying a Laptop. We thought it would be less priced and if not there will be so many gifts too... But in the many shops we went, they all had above normal prices and when we talked of prices without gifts, they were less. Also, the products that they had included in the Gift Package, were higher in costs. Meaning - if we purchased the items in their gifts, they would cost us much less than what they discounted when we said, laptops without gifts. We did not buy any laptop.

yes my friend this is a marketing trick or sales upgradation . When we buy agarbathi the pack looks a long one ,however it has a match box in it which makes the length of the agarbathi less ,the sticks are not as long as the box they are in.The price is high and we think that the agarbathi stick is long and it lasts for a long period of time but to our surprise that is just a short one inside. i can say that they are of good fragrance and the cost is for that only. Tooth brush ,its better to buy out.Not going with an offer as the quality is not that good as well as its not free also, they have charges. Many offers are in this way only ,It is better to go with branded items rather thinking of offers and discounts. Sometimes it works but nothing comes free.

Yes madam I came across so many such things. Price becomes more and quality becomes less. This is a sad thing.

It truly depends on the offer at hand. Shampoo often does this with an extra 20% more or whatever which is fine so long as you said the price didn't go up. Now I bought some the other month (wish I had more money to spare to buy more) 24oz bottle for $1 where they are normally 18oz for a dollar. Then when I was able to shop there again it was back to the 18oz for a dollar and I did not buy any. As you can find another brand that is ok for similar price or a bit less when it's on special.

I agree with you; but sellers certainly adopt different techniques, equally true for reputed and new products. Best of luck. Sorry for commenting late. Kalyani

dear Ma Buy one take one offer here is really good. That is why some people bought those products and sell it again individually for a good profit. Have a good day Ma and hugs to you and Pa

Hi Kalyni, The same is here. I notice a lot of buy one get one free deals and they aren't deals at all.. they are just tricking us.. or trying to... yet I am always going to pick them up. Like spaghetti sauce.. they actually raise the price of one to cover the price of the other. We do have something good though.. on Wednesdays my grocery store has penny days... they always have one product that is a penny when you buy $10 worth of product... so I will always shop on Wednesdays. You can only get one though for a penny... buying $20 worth of product won't get you 2 penny products.. that sucks.

It is the same here in the Philippines. Many buy-one-take-one offers are just propaganda techniques. I usually think first before buying these kind of offers. If I frequently buy the product and I know the original price, I could easily tell if they really are giving more value to my money. If the product is new to me, I just evaluate if I really need the product or if I am just tempted because of the offer. If this is the case, I usually roam around the store first. If my alter ego still bugs me after several hours, I would come back and buy the product.

Yes indeed, and most of the time the take one which is supposedly "free" has some damages or manufacturing errors. _

I agree sometimes they are offers with higher prices, but here sometimes they are offers at regular prices. I think it is important to note the price, and the combined value of both items, and then decide if those items are things we would use if we did have them. So, in some ways it can be a good deal and in others just a way to get more business.

No matter what type of offers there are, we shall compare the price. If we think the price is not reasonable, do buy it. Honestly, some offer items are very cheap by comparing to normal retail prices. Other than the price, we shall compare the quality too. Ensure those offer items are still within the validity dates without physically damages. Let's shop smart and save more.

It depends on the offer. I usually knows the regular price of those item being the only who do the grocery shopping in our family. If it is really cost saving offer and we really need it, I grab it easily. Usually necessities like toothpaste, laundry soap and shampoo are items that attracts me. Like, for shampoo, a dozen of sachet would give 2 free sachet. That I buy it easily.

They actually take advantage of people's psychology anxious to get things on the cheap.Much the same here,In fact what is called buy one get one free is that the wool still comes from the sheep's back-whatever you're given, you pay for.

That's all right !Nowadays, many stores say if something you have bought reaches a certain number, you can get another one thrown in.It is actually a sales gimmick.

Hello.! Well here in our place, it depends upon the product. There are so called marketing schemes were they usually had plans so that the product can be bought fastly. For example, some markets use buy one take one because that product is near to its expiration date so it is needed to be sold immediately. single price with double product. Another example is, some products use freebies so that it can attract customer. Like, a dish washing liquid. they put a sponge freebie so that it can be easily sold. But there are some products that are selling buy one take one but the price is also buy one,buy one also.

Yes you are right, after expiry none will buy, so they adopt this technique.. Best of luck. Sorry for commenting late. Kalyani

We just need to be careful while buying products in such cases, consider price of one product in ' buy one get one scheme' and compare it with market price, if its cheaper than no harm in buying and if it is more than market product than try next time. Enjoy shopping....

I have often seen these kinds of offers. If it is something I'm going to buy anyway, I may go for the special price, but for the most part, I just go for the product with the best price regardless of the selling technique. I do that with coupons and I do it with everything else. I guess that is one reason I seldom use coupons because they usually want you to purchase more than you will ever use in order to save a small amount of money. When I see another product that is the same in all aspects but is cheaper than the coupon price, I go for it. Thanks for bringing this up!

It is marketing strategy, there are so many supply of the product that in order for them to dispose it, they need to do such techniques. I do buy but i see to it that the pricing is fair, just like last time i was in the grocery and they were selling a toothpaste which was 250grams and buy one take one, i purchased it the pricing was fair, if i would buy one of it it costs around 45 pesos so if i buy two of it, it would be 90 but since it is buy one take one at a price of 55, then i get a good bargain right? so i guess they did that in order for them to dispose the product even if it means they just reach they break even point.

Yes, we see this all the time here as well. They want you to think you are getting a good deal but they raise the price significantly before they give you the "discount" so you are still paying the same price! I try to be very aware of most of my prices so i know when something is really a good deal or not!

Today I purchased a toothpaste. I do not know the free offer in it . The offer is I am getting another paste free. I have to give money only for one paste, but since it is a rare paste(may be old stock?)I purchased it. But the price is too high for a single paste! We have to buy even if there is a offer and we know the high price; since most all products comes with one free gift. There are a few things that do not have free
